we say thank you GNOME for their hard work while Mint parasitically rebranded their tool without contributing anything

are there examples of US newsrooms or media outlets who are explicit about *not* tracking readers on their websites? (or tracking for internal use only but not selling data into the data broker tracking stream?)

(yes i know ad tech is bad, and i am asking on behalf of students)

ooooh teach them about alternatives to venture backed corporations. Any alternative!!!!
once i realized my students had zero context for @ntnsndr or @rwg or @andresmh 's work on platform cooperatives i launched into the comparative structures, labor relations, governance, financing and micro histories of coops, b-corps, mom and pop shops, shareholder backed corporations and VC backed startups. Easily the most influential mini impromptu lecture i gave in years.
in reply to Cyberlyra

totally. One of the big realizations in my early years teaching is that students actually had never heard of labor organizing. I had to switch from being appalled to seeing it as a wonderful opportunity to teach:)
in reply to Nathan Schneider

i've had that experience too, but this class is a journalism class (media/law) so i can bring that up easily early on and i do.

I don't get the whole Arch snob thing. I tried it on one of my PCs and ditched it. There are too many other distros that just work and let me get on with my day.

I keep my amazon subscription only because of the game keys they distribute. Everything else is slop that i take as a bonus.

If they kill the GOG / Epic gamekey subscription is one less service I'll be subscribing to.

i love that they are opening self hosting. But:

"Please be advised that the initial setup for this first iteration of the feature is more technical than most other games and requires a computer running Microsoft Windows Pro with Hyper-V in order to run the servers in a Linux Virtual Machine (VM). "

As someone who does not run anything but Linux, this, admittedly seems a bit dumb.

"You must have a windows pro license to run this on Linux"

in reply to It's FOSS

it's because #Opensource #Community is divided into small groups.. Every single #Foss project claimed we are providing better solutions thn other #Foss project. Instead of making 20 different projects they need to build one project together that fits for every single user. Put all the donated funds in one basket and use it to create one single project by adding all the grt features and security in one. Otherwise u ll see other projects dying soon.

All these requests for support for specific applications, not to mention requests from organisations, associations...
Support a few applications, associations..., I do it according to my means, but next to it, you have a life, a burden to pay (rent, car, insurance, food, charges for children...) and then with the current context, everything increases, and it becomes more and more difficult for everyone.
It's sad, but there's a choice to make today and sometimes it's not easy.

Latin nerds, I need you!
Offering Elvish nerdery in return 👇

Trying to translate "keep it secret – keep it safe" to #Latin, which I know is tricksy. Looking at verbs like servare and conservare, and adjectives for "safe" like tutus/salvus/securus...??

If you can help, I will write your phrase of choice in Tengwar (Elvish script)! Here's a sample of one way I write it – though I'll do straight lines 😅
I'll write them on a livestream and link image files for you.

securus is more like securely, but I've seen tutus(tutum) used like that before, I think that's a good bet!

Brought my son to see Rent & the story is still as incredible & timely as ever.

It’s interesting to consider the parallel between the changing media environment of the 90s spurred by the Internet with today’s AI transition.

As a native New Yorker & teen when it first debuted, I’ve always felt a special connection with this one.

Glad my 13yo could experience it too. Sparked good conversations. Angel was ahead of her time. #art

in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

Great connection—both eras felt like cultural pivots where technology reshaped how people connect, create, and survive. Glad your son got to experience Rent; it really still hits on a human level across generations.

cities skylines has given me a dramatically inflated perception of the frequency of elderly death wave hearse traffic jams (which was incidentally the name of my band in uni)

#Apple erased in their #maps all the cities, villages, and names in southern #Lebanon

What do you call it when you digitally erase a population group from an area to make that area empty or homogeneous, or the deliberate attempt to make a national, ethnic, or religious group wholly or partially disappear from the map?”

[update]No response from Apple yet, it’s unclear if, since, why, when this has been the case. Missing data? error?

RE: mastodon.gamedev.place/@eniko/…

Having lived through both (and the book bans, Chinese products, vaccines, food additives, video games, rap, non-English speakers, fucking other people's family BBQs, ect ect) it's all the same thing. It's always the same thing, (rich/white) people blaming something else instead of their shitty abusive parenting and the harmful status quo they depend on to explain why their abused and hurting kids are abused and hurting.

i really hope 40 years from now people will look at banning kids from social media the way people now look at the satanic panic of the 80s

#Iwatched The Mummy (1999) for the first time. As expected it was a fun classic adventure time. The film obviously owes a lot to the Indiana Jones series but more interestingly it is elevated by the performance of the charming and witty #RachelWeisz. I'll have to check out other projects of hers.
