RHEL AI would be one example.

#canonical #ubuntu NO MORE ! Until they stop forcing #snaps in my face and stop asking for "protection money" the days where i would use UBUNTU ARE GONE FOR GOOD!! I put it right there beside the #RedHat distros , on the TRASH HEAP.

I remember all this stuff going on back in the day.

We were running #Gentoo in production at a research facility at the time and it was, umm, interesting, as the quality of the portage tree was very uneven during this time.

Directly related, maybe... maybe not. Shenanigans certainly didn't help I'd expect.

We moved to #Centos in ~2008 IIRC. We were #Redhat before Gentoo so it was a 'comfy old shoes' move.

Don't. Honestly, I'm skeptical about the benefits of Linux going mainstream. It could lead to unwanted regulation and the interference of big tech companies. Take #RedHat, for example—they made controversial moves without facing consequences. So, unless you're genuinely passionate about #Linux or appreciate the freedom it offers (which, let's face it, most people don't—they prefer a dumb, uniform, user-friendly experience like #Apple 's), it might not be the best direction to push for.

I'll always love #Ubuntu because it's so easy to install and setup on any laptop. I can quickly get up and going, and just run a shell script to setup my dev env. Recently been using #elementaryos8 so that the younger ones in my family can play around with Linux safely. I've used #RedHat and #centos professionally. I tried #fedora but it was a pain to find and install drivers.

not sure what to say, but honestly no other OS makes me as happy as Arch. ❤️ :arch:
I wouldn't touch #fedora with a stick after what #RedHat did, and #Ubuntu is not that far, maybe worse on some things.

OFC, one does always buy into an #Ecosystem...

I think #Canonical should not #hamfist #Snap too hard and instead work towards a safe alliance to enshure portability of #Linux applications across Distros to replace the #RedHat dominance and avoid a #Duopoly if not #Tripoly for their own sake.

Which reminds me that @EU_Commission not calling out #RHEL and #Autodesk as #Market #Gatekeepers shows that those decisionmakers know shit about #tech.

Yet another prime example of #Redhat 's piss-poor communication. Their #PR dept. needs some overhauling.

#RedHatFreeloaders #AlmaLinux #Linux #Alma #CVE

Earlier today at #almalinux we patched CVE-2023-38403 in iperf3 and released it prior to anyone else in the EL-ecosystem. We promptly submitted PRs with #centos and #fedora.

A lot was learned during this process so we can nail down the processes of doing our own patches while contributing upstream and ultimately deliver on our promises from https://almalinux.org/blog/future-of-almalinux/

🕺 New Changelog & Friends!

Red Hat’s decision to lock down RHEL sources behind a subscription paywall was met with much ire and opened opportunity for Oracle to get a smack in and SUSE to announce a fork with $10 million behind it 🥊

Few RHEL community members have been as publicly irate as @geerlingguy, so we invited him on the show to discuss 💬

very good write up by the @conservancy and great commentary from Brodie as always.

I believe what #RedHat is doing is not against the #GPL or #FreeSoftware. For me, what's more concerning is their communication in which they position themselves as "fully committed to open source", while constantly egging on one of the four pillars of software freedom.

#Redhat has determined that they see no value in a downstream rebuilder of #rhel #linux https://www.redhat.com/en/blog/red-hats-commitment-open-source-response-gitcentosorg-changes

Given that, as the #MicroMirror team @warthog9 and I have concerns in supporting RHEL's upstream development branch in a community manner. We have removed Centos-stream from the eight Micro Mirror nodes as well as our main mirror.fcix.net mirror which were hosting that project, explicitly over these concerns.

The MicroMirror project is run, literally, as a hobby and a public benefit. No one on the team is paid for this effort, and in fact costs us money (though we actively appreciate and love the support we get, we still throw our own skin into this game too!). It's hard to be a part of Redhat's community when they seemingly take umbrage with our support, so from our perspective Redhat needs to either embrace the community as we have always wanted and expected from them, or until such time as they do they should consider getting into the Linux mirror business for their development branch of RHEL.
