“The #fediverse is like #email.”
Yes.
Now read this and understand it:
“I have been self-hosting my email since I got my first broadband connection at home in 1999 … But my emails are just not delivered anymore. I might as well not have an email server.
Email is now an oligopoly, a service gatekept by a few big companies which does not follow the principles of net neutrality … I lost. We lost. One cannot reliably deploy independent email servers.“

After self-hosting my email for twenty-three years I have thrown in the towel. The oligopoly has won.
Many companies have been trying to disrupt email by making it proprietary. So far, they have failed. Email keeps being an open protocol. Hurray? No hurray. Email is not distributed anymore. You just cannot create another first-class node of this necfenollosa.com
I got tired of forgetting where the #RSS / #Atom #feeds are on various #Fediverse platforms and having to track them down, so I started a list.
hyperborea.org/tech-tips/fediv…
Currently covers *deep breath* #Mastodon, #Bookwyrm, #Funkwhale, #GoToSocial, #Lemmy, #Misskey & forks, #Pleroma & forks #PeerTube, #Pixelfed, #Plume, #Snac2, #Takahe, and #WriteFreely
*whew*
Feel free to let me know what I should add to the list (or any corrections I need to make) in a reply to this post!

Here’s @coachtony sharing more about what we’re up to with me.dm, why we’re excited about #Mastodon and the #fediverse, and what it will mean for #Medium writers and members.

As @coachtony writes:
”Today, Medium is launching a Mastodon instance at me.dm to help our authors, publications and readers find a home in the fediverse. Mastodon is an emerging force for good in social media and we are excited to join this community."

Attention fedizens, it has come to our attention that more trolls are causing a ruckus on the #fediverse. Beware of users who use acronyms like lgbtq/lgbtqia in posts or on their profiles.
LGBTQ/LGBTQIA stands for Let's Get Banned Today Quickly (by) Instance Admins, is used to refer to a group of trolls who like to block evade or "speedrun" getting defederated.
They will make inflammatory posts such as the one below to see how quickly they can get on #fediblock.
If you see any #lgbtqia individuals please block and federate safely.
There's a new groups system for the Fediverse called chirp.social. More info at:
➡️ chirp.social
You can join a group by following the group account. You can post to the group by @-ing the group account, which then reposts that to all its other followers
It is similar to the existing a.gup.pe system, but chirp.social allows a group manager to delete posts and ban people from the group.
It works on all Fediverse platforms including Mastodon.

Hello new people! 👋
I run a human-curated directory of interesting accounts to follow on here:
Do you have an account that posts a lot about a particular topic? Would you like to be listed in the directory?
If so, @ me or send me a DM and let me know!
(The site only went live a few days ago so some topics are less populated than others, but this is why I am working on expanding it!)
Boosts appreciated :blobcat:
Incredible talk about #ActivityPub by @rolltime. I used it as a podcast while setting up ActivityPub stuff on my micro blogging site, and I was really well informed & entertained.

A New HOPE (2022): ActivityPub Four Years Later: The Good, the Bad, and the Fedi

My mother is _sort of_ on the #fediverse. Her #singer / #songwriter blog supports #ActivityPub, so you should all give her a follow!

She's even got a video up there from...well, I won't post the exact year. ;p
What happens when you have your own Mastodon instance (just for you) where over 21,000 people follow you and when you’re following over 4,300 people?
You end up paying ~€50/month for Mastodon hosting 👀
It also opens up interesting questions: what happens when a popular account joins your instance (hint: it will probably cost the instance maintainers quite a bit… I don’t envy the mastodon.nu folks right now).
Can't like, reshare, or mark this post
hello !Friendica Support
I am using the 2022.10 version of friendica. I know the bug, that i can't like a post of somebody I don't follow. but this one, I also cannot reshare. I can also not mark it for later:
amical.info/display/ec054ce7-3…
Also I don't see all the counted likes and comments, that exist on the original post..
somebody has an idea ? what to do... ? should i use the develop version? never tried that

Livestreaming people!
Do you want people on Mastodon to be able to follow your livestream and be notified when you go live?
There's a free open source streaming platform called @owncast which is also part of the Fediverse:
You can follow OwnCast streams from Mastodon, and a post will appear in your timeline when they go live.
For example you can follow music accounts like @live or tech & gaming streamers like @Hamish or @hatnix
For anyone else going down the whole "how does #mastodon and the #fediverse work" rabbit hole...

How to implement a basic ActivityPub server
Today we’ll be looking at how to connect the protocols powering Mastodon in the simplest way possible to enter the federated network.Official Mastodon Blog
Food for thought: The bigger mastodon.social gets, the less successful the #fediverse is.
Sadly, the fundamental design of Mastodon mirrors the design of Big Tech (a server architecture that can support hundreds of thousands of “users”) and thus inherits its success criteria.
I feel it’s time we at least started thinking about what the web would look like if we all had our own place on it and what it would take to get there from here.
We should not be optimising Mastodon so it can handle more people per server. We should be optimising Mastodon so it incentivises more serves with fewer people.
(And if you take that line of thinking to its logical conclusion, you arrive at the idea behind the Small Web: ar.al/2020/08/07/what-is-the-s…)

Setting Up Friendica Daemon as a Systemd Service Tutorial
Friendica relies heavily on worker processes for doing things like federation, cleaning up the database, and many other tasks. It can either be run as a periodically running system cron job or in a daemon mode.N=1 Lifestyle
Tutorial: Creating a Friendica Server with Ubuntu 22.04
The main Friendica documentation has install instructions for setting up the core part of the system. However it assumes that you have properly installed all the dependencies and leaves securing the system as an exercise to the user.N=1 Lifestyle

Are there any developers out there interested in making a Film & TV review/discussion platform for the Fediverse?
Almost every time I've mentioned the Fediverse's excellent book platform @bookwyrm (joinbookwyrm.com) there have been people asking whether a film/TV version would be possible.
Does this sound doable to devs? Maybe it could use wikidata (wikidata.org) for film data the same way BookWyrm and @inventaire do with books?
If you know someone looking for new Fediverse ideas, could you pass this on to them?
