Travelling in #Sabah, it's struck me how many #conservation initiatives are funded by #palmoil companies, who have been a major source of #deforestation in the state. I had also noticed many conservationists working with palm oil plantations, in part because they need to access them to better study the #wildlife that are increasingly found to be roaming there. This threw up questions that led to my latest published story: https://www.aljazeera.com/features/2023/6/28/can-plantations-value-more-than-profit-some-in-malaysia-think-so

Could use some more opinions on this from folks familiar with Southern US #gardening, climate, and #wildlife: https://www.reddit.com/r/plantclinic/comments/14et4y1/help_my_baby_please/

Current off-reddit hypothesis is that caterpillars went to town on it and that it'll probably recover now that their busy season is over. The city balcony it's on is on the 3rd floor, but near some trees.

Meet the biggest and most bizarre skink ever found in Australia. It became extinct 47,000 years ago https://theconversation.com/meet-the-biggest-and-most-bizarre-skink-ever-found-in-australia-it-became-extinct-47-000-years-ago-206764 #wildlife

I have too many photos of sloths and all are too cute to sort out and delete. Also, I can't remember which sloth (2-toed or 3-toed) has long hair vs short hair, brown vs grey, smiley face vs piggy face). I heard the explanation so many times but it simply wouldn't stick, I'll just have to google it.

Arenal volcano, Costa Rica.

The louder the dawn chorus and the cacophony of #wildlife, the better the locale and, by extension, life for the creatures that dwell there.

Soundscapes can provide a valuable insight into the health of a habitat. A #RaspberryPi can help conservationists listen in.

Snakes, Bats, and Glowing Things: Field Genomics in the Amazon Jungle
Fri 7:00 PM - Sat 1:00 AM
Biotech Without Borders

How do scientists do disease surveillance and study biodiversity through the lens of genomics? Citizen scientist Blacki Migliozzi joined a group of jungle field researchers to find out.

Through anecdotes and stunning photography he will walk us through what it's like to work with big cats, primates, birds, bats, frogs, snakes and many other kinds of organisms. He'll also provide first-hand observations of the habitat loss endangering these ecosystems as well as the dangers scientists put themselves in when doing this important work.

We're located in Suite 319, you may have to call/text the lab phone (7086371289) to enter.

This is also one of my favourite owl photographs I've made. These two Barred Owl (Strix varia) owlets were sitting together on this branch and were nice enough to still be there when I returned with a longer lens!

I just spotted my first wombats in the wild on Cradle Mountain in Tasmania.

These stocky little marsupials sort of look like a cross between a baby brown bear, koala & pig. They have a pouch like other marsupials, but it’s backwards which prevents dirt from entering as they burrow.

At just over 3 ft long, they’re absolutely charming. But millions of years ago, herds of giant wombats as large as rhinoceros roamed southern #Australia. #wildlife #photography #SharedPlanet

Our friend Ian Saturley has captured our new favourite #RaspberryPi -powered #wildlife camera shot.

Video of fox emerging during the day: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmxDvRZfE3Y

And at night: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGO5_ku6T4w

Now Ian knows why there is a hole under the fence.
