Fresh looked really good, but it also appears to be vibe-coded. No thanks.

The UK now has a Prime Minister simulator. That is, you can play Prime Minister in a simulation.

Well, lets see if I last longer than Liz Truss!

“Karp’s message is loud and clear: My technology will take political capital away from one of your greatest enemies—liberal women with degrees—and give one of your favorite demographics to patronize—working-class men—more political power to transfer to you.”

These fucking women-hating weirdo assholes.

I used to think my nemesis was the finance bro. My mistake. It's the Tech Bro. Specifically, this kind.

I cannot agree more! “Why we should look beyond grades to spot potential in STEM”

science.org/content/article/wh… #science

in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

That was a very good article.

My best friend growing up had poor grades due to some very traumatic things that happened to her as a kid and teen.

When she applied to college, she was denied entry due to her GPA.

She did eventually go to a different school and get a degree as an adult, but I remember thinking how unfair it was not to take all of the non-academic stuff she was dealing with into account the first time she applied.

I’m so glad this is changing.

in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

My wife is currently a Senior Principal Test Engineer at a startup semiconductor company. She's chaired conferences in her discipline. She's taken chips from a piece of paper to tens of millions of units shipped a year.

Today she wouldn't even get a single call for a job interview. She's terrified of getting a masters degree because her GPA was 2.7. GPAs dont mean shit.

"Do you think it's inappropriate in any way that someone w/ no experience w/ grants for the federal government was making personal judgment calls about what grants to cancel?" an attorney asked.

"Um, no. I don't think it's inappropriate," Cavanaugh said, arguing that he did not need formal education or experience to make informed judgments. 🤔

in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

not many people know the Federal government can and does flag people as "not eligible for rehire," and those kids better have that flag set on their SF-51, if they were ever actual federal employees, which I rather doubt.

She rode through London in a coach pulled by eight white bulls, wore dresses that scandalized Samuel Pepys into near-incoherence, and published critiques of both Hobbes and Descartes. She also wrote science fiction 152 years before *Frankenstein*. Her name was Margaret Cavendish — the woman who kept writing the future while her century tried to close the door.

"What a big relief it was years ago when I realised I don't have to be an optimist. ... I declared myself an diehard 'possibilist'. And it works. I've learned ...that human beings don't need certainty of outcome to achieve great feats. We only need a sense of possibility."

I think PC has gone so far it'stime for it to do a 180. Bigotry and hate are now politically "correct"
in reply to Jen Sorensen

Funny thing is, dog whistles by their very nature is "politically correct speech"; they won't say what they really mean because they know it's unpalatable, so they have to dress it up in a way that's recognizable to those who are in the know, but innocuous to someone coming in fresh.

Say no to Palantir in the NHS

NHS England is rolling out software to run our health records from Palantir – a US spy-tech firm that has supported mass deportation in the US and enabled genocide in Gaza.

One of Palantir’s founders is also openly against the NHS. Peter Thiel claimed it “makes people sick” and said that the British people love the NHS because we’re suffering from Stockholm syndrome.

We can’t let a company like this take control of our healthcare system.

But we can fight back right now. We’ve set up a simple tool so you can find out if your local NHS trust has started using the software, and then send an email demanding they say no to Palantir.

With the government putting NHS trusts under pressure to adopt the software, we need to act right now. If you want to keep Palantir out of our NHS, send an email to your local trust and Wes Streeting, secretary of state for health.

in reply to Muse

I do sign those petitions and many others. More importantly, I donate to organizations that fight against surveillance, such as EFF, and to candidates who don't back government surveillance, such as Sam Wang and James Talarico.
