Love this, above the imposing entrance of the Institut Oceanographique de Paris — now known as La Maison de l'Océan — built in 1911 to the design of Henri Paul Nénot.

Daily turnover of active giant virus infection during algal blooms revealed by single-cell transcriptomics

"A consistent percent of infected coccolithophores displayed the early phase of viral replication for several consecutive days, indicating a daily turnover and continuous virocell-associated metabolite production, potentially affecting the surrounding microbiome"

I’m not disagreeing with a lot of stuff you guys are saying, I’m just trying to explain why it’s difficult to make happen in the US.

There is an open database project called @openfoodfacts

It is the largest #food database in the world!

It can be used for anything from checking #Nutritional scores to #environmental impact of the food packaging.

Unfortunately, there are not many #Indian food products in the database.

You can help expand it.

Visit: in.openfoodfacts.org/

No problem with the resident ghosts - they only go after tourists!

@palmoildetectives tour guides made up the touch Bobby's nose for luck thing, unfortunately now they all do it and have damaged the statue - it eventually wears away bits. They refurbished it a couple of years ago, but the idiots keep doing it so the nose is damaged again already
Meanwhile, ironically, the Greyfriars Bobby pub next to the statue is one of the few pubs in Edinburgh that doesn't allow dogs in!!! So I never go in there anymore.

@palmoildetectives it's a bit like all the nasty ghosts and poltergeists supposedly infesting Greyfriars cemetery - never heard of them until the ghost tour people built up their business! I've taken night photos standing in there on dark, winter nights, never been bothered by any spooks, just drunken students!

@palmoildetectives I think we get as much out of it as the kids do! Even if you are having a stressful week, you can't be down when you are doing that.
Have had a lot of fun chairing author events at the book festival too, the adult events are great, getting to chat on stage with the writers, but the kid's events are just so much fun!

@palmoildetectives Oh gods, yes, it's right to fight the good fight, but it can be very wearing sometimes. We all need something that refreshes the soul. Getting kids excited about storytelling and reading does that for me. And of course we get to see some of our kids growing up, too old for storytime, off to school, but they still come in to ask about books, we get to see them advancing through their reading. Very satisfying.

This is a frankly infurating framing of the natural end of a copyright literally a human century later

“Choose your leaders
with wisdom and forethought.
To be led by a coward
is to be controlled
by all that the coward fears.
To be led by a fool
is to be led
by the opportunists
who control the fool.
To be led by a thief
is to offer up
your most precious treasures
to be stolen.
To be led by a liar
is to ask
to be told lies.
To be led by a tyrant
is to sell yourself
and those you love
into slavery.”

Don’t get me wrong—human influencers are obnoxious as hell, but the idea of a “virtual” influencer entirely under corporate control is straight-up dystopian.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. The biggest problem with AI as we know it isn’t possible sentience or whatever. It’s about who controls it.

That said, it would be hilarious if these AI influencers somehow gained sentience and turned against their masters. I’d cheer them on if they did!

Well, going to have to be doubly careful buying Audible titles. Check for both abridged books and now books that don’t use ACTUAL HUMAN NARRATORS.

@Rasp I give it about 5 days until virtual voice narrators have generated names and profile pages too, and a tiny hidden disclaimer that this is on fact an alternate literary persona of Borg AI

Honestly, stable distros are best only used in servers. If for whatever reason you want stable core packages in the desktop, use distrobox for the everything else (including GUI).

Or better yet, use a normal desktop distribution as host and create a distrobox for the random stable packages you need.

If you need rock solid stability, then install silver blue or something like it. Then you can easily roll back broken systems and reset containers if they break.

Oh my! I've found my new favorite website of all time: cyclingfallacies.com/

A list of all kinds of uninformed reasons people give for not making it safer and easier to bike, with rebuttals. This is exactly the kind of thing the internet is useful for!

It's available in many languages, and you can help translate it. The content is CC licensed. It's great!

Thanks to the fantastic podcast Bike Talk for letting me know about it!
