The reason why the Artemis mission has everyone so fascinated is because it is a showcase for the efforts of people who are very, very good at their jobs, at a time when the news cycle is dominated by people who are not merely terrible at their jobs, but awful human beings as well.

SpaceX takes out massive loans to litter low Earth orbit with Starlinks, running up interest.

Then SpaceX says "If you ignore all of the costs from building the Starlinks, they are making money. Give us your cash so we can further mess up the sky."

Quite the scam.

Titel erscheinen als Content Warning (CW) in Mastodon

Hallo zusammen,

David Attenborough turns 100 years old on the 8th of May.

He is a human who has spent his time loving the diversity of life on this planet. His documentaries helped emphasise the biodiversity crisis while also infectiously spreading this love of other species.

My partner and I are thinking of having a small, gentle event on the day to recognise his life. Maybe a walk with friends, taking moments to stop and acknowledge the creatures around us.

Want to join us, wherever you are in the world?

in reply to Fionnáin

Sir Attenborough is a treasure for all of humanity. I wish he could live for another century.
in reply to Mikko Rintasaari

@Adept I hear you, though I also think it's wonderful that we work together with our elders and ancestors to build futures. He is an inspiration and a mentor, and I am grateful for the time he has given to us and still gives.

Stop guessing and start investigating with these systemd tools.

in reply to It's FOSS

@Zaphod42
I still dislike systemd, especially journactl.
And I don’t see anything that will change that.

For me it’s bloated crap that breaks my workflow without adding any benefit.

Yes, others might like it. I do not.

in reply to It's FOSS

counterpoint: people new to linux shouldn't need to use the terminal *at all*, and any point at which the terminal becomes a requirement for someone new to linus is a major pain point for using the system.

A few things:

1) A collection of textile craft processes with many local variations
2) Something that I have used in artworks, and learned to make in one process (though never well)
3) A part of a history of predominantly women's work
4) A material in garments designed to denote class in the 19th Century that became devalued through mechanical manufacture (both the value of the craft and the perception of class attached to it)

🤔What if the greatest president in US history is a woman that will get elected in the 2040s?

And she reverses climate change, ends world hunger, and leads the multinational effort that saves us from The Comet(tm)?

But she never exists?

Because she dropped out of politics?

Because of harassment?

Same vibes as this Steven Jay Gould quote:

“I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein’s brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops.”

Just read a study that noted, “Unvaccinated residents showed higher hazards for transitioning to COVID death.” I am not sure that I've seen “dying” framed in such a delicate way.

“Is he dying, doctor?”
“No, he is merely transitioning to death.”

Europe, the AI Continent.

One year ago, we launched the AI Continent Action Plan. Since then, we have made huge strides:

✅ 19 AI factories are now live across EU countries.
✅ We established the AI Skills Academy to train experts.
✅ The AI Omnibus is cutting costs for business.
✅ We have earmarked €1 billion to support AI adoption in industry.

We are building a secure and innovative AI future for Europe.

Here's how 👉 link.europa.eu/nj3VH9

Hi @peachymist! Artificial intelligence already plays a crucial role in our daily lives, and as AI develops, it holds even greater potential to improve the lives of EU citizens: enhancing disease prevention, reducing traffic fatalities, anticipating cyber threats, and much more. That's why we are proposing rules and actions for AI, enabling us to harness its full potential and maximise its benefits.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron @peachymist much as I don’t want AI in everything- that ship has sailed. Given the problem at the heart of the EU is translation - having “boxed” llms that only work on a specific corpus of work and can translate is something that could be useful. The open web scraping nonsense can get in the sea.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron @peachymist

+1 if AI is basically a synonym for LLMs.

If it’s about finally taking data quality serious, thinking hard about our underlying algorithmic problems and then applying heuristical methods, then yes please let’s do that and support institutions in this journey.

in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron @peachymist I understand the sentiment, but it’s militarily and economically untenable. Europe’s militaries would fall behind. Most economic sectors, where not already a victim of Baumol’s cost disease, would become victims of Baumol’s cost disease. The genie is out of the bottle, and to put it back in would require unanimous participation, including bad actors.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

for real, Europe don’t be stupid like us here in the USA destroying our communities for data centers and driving power rates and consumption into the stratosphere for LLMs and generative AI.

in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron @peachymist I’m afraid I can’t agree with you here. Europe is not a separate planet, isolated from the rest of the world. If we, as Europe, do not adopt and develop the most advanced solutions, we will simply lose our competitiveness - both in terms of products and the workforce.

We can already see this very clearly in the automotive industry. If we turn away from innovation, Europe risks falling into a deep economic crisis instead of strengthening its position.

in reply to Marcin Czachurski

@mczachurski @peachymist AI 1) deskills workers 2) makes access to information and knowledge harder 3) concentrates wealth within big tech. Europe would be MORE competetive without AI.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron @peachymist AI will undoubtedly change how we build software. In some ways it will help, in others it will harm. But this has already begun and cannot be stopped. Europe cannot simply opt out, or companies will move to Asia or the US, leaving us with rising unemployment. We must build something better: ethical, competitive AI. Europe has the talent and resources to do it. 😉
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron @mczachurski @peachymist to further the discussion, please provide some clarity as to what AI is, or at least the definition by which you abide. Then, please elaborate on your points that Al 1) deskills workers 2) makes access to information and knowledqe harder 3) concentrates wealth within big tech. Such that any country would be MORE competetive without Al.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron @peachymist 1) Work will shift: less manual coding, more reviewing, directing, and managing AI agents. 2) AI adds tools; it does not remove search engines or other ways of accessing knowledge. 3) Wealth is concentrated for now, but that is temporary - smaller local models are already emerging, even on phones.

You cannot be more competitive if you refuse to offer the services the market demands.

Everyone I know who uses Haunt to build their websites loves it, and there's good reason for that: it's the static site generator foundation that best understands that a static site generator is a computer program, a function whose input is a pile of blogpost files and whose output is a complete website.

But at the end of the day it's just a computer program, and you should be able to hack that program to make it yours

Use Haunt! dthompson.us/projects/haunt.ht…

i want to make a zine about "week of patching" in addition to a webpage. i want to encourage people to share their patches via the fediverse, who may not yet know what it is. is there a good guide/resource for getting started on mastodon or similar that i could share as a QR code or something? i have seen some things like that a while ago but i thought maybe there are some better and/or more up to date ones that have been created now? also server recommendations?
in reply to Devine Lu Linvega

@neauoire yes, i will make a better explanation in the webpage/zine! but for fun, i also wanted to invite people to patch software bugs or mend cloth instead, if that is a better fit for their practice 😀
