I took these while walking this morning in the park that I usually go for running every morning. It's fascinating how everything looks new and different when you only change your perspective.

For the name of the restaurant, It's a joke based on the local magpies, who steal food from the cats in our colony, so we've made them their own place. It means “The thieving magpie” which is also a nod to a Tintín comic book.
Science Debate is now "Science on the Ballot" with @SciPolNetwork
This nonpartisan initiative, which I cofounded in 2007, asks candidates, elected officials, the public & the media to focus on science policy issues prior to Election Day. scipolnetwork.org/science-on-t… #elections #science #politics
U.S. state coalitions are launching on Tuesday, July 18 at 7pm ET & you can join the kickoff event to get involved, learn about the program & work with campaigns. Register at ow.ly/Bgz950P20Jp
@Bwacton @SciPolNetwork I stepped down from leadership in 2022, so this is now formally a program within the National Science Policy Network.
That said, there have been many countries, including Canada, that we had supported using the Science Debate model in their elections since 2008. I think it’s a excellent idea.

I meant to post this a while back. Do watch this short film shot by Yih Wen Chen for New Naratif telling the story of how large swathes of #mangroves in Pitas, Kudat were cleared for #Sabah's largest #aquaculture farm, which failed to take off (along with any promises of jobs supposedly to alleviate poverty)—leaving local villagers to pick up the mess and rehabilitate what's left: rainforestjournalismfund.org/s…

Travelling in #Sabah, it's struck me how many #conservation initiatives are funded by #palmoil companies, who have been a major source of #deforestation in the state. I had also noticed many conservationists working with palm oil plantations, in part because they need to access them to better study the #wildlife that are increasingly found to be roaming there. This threw up questions that led to my latest published story: aljazeera.com/features/2023/6/…
Can plantations value more than profit? Some in Malaysia think so

A Minute from the Moderators
Moderator volunteers, Reddit alternatives, and Metacommunity.hachyderm.io
This conversation is vital to the development of some sort of consensus as to how we as a community are going to continue to co-exist if and when instances begin to federate with #Meta.
The "relay" issue that Jon raises should be explicitly addressed. That is, if you federate with #Threads and do not enable auth_fetch it seems like posts that your user's boost will be sent to Meta (See mastodon.online/@mastodonmigra…).
"Nativist" path to "scaling" ActivertyPub
Meany people are talking about the scaling issues small instances are likely to face with the #mainstreaming of metas threads etc. Mostly this focuses on makeing our code work for bigger instances.SocialHub

There is absolutely no way to “negotiate” with the physics of our dumping 39 Gt CO2 into the atmosphere per year.
This behaviour results in accelerating climate change as can be witnessed by the rise in the global average temperature to +1.27°C above pre industrial averages.
If we continue to treat earths atmosphere as a CO2 sewer we will all but ensure catastrophic climate change within the next 70 years.
2/
We understand the physics. As a result we also understand what we need to do to avert catastrophe.
Here it is: We need to go from emitting 39 Gt CO2 per year to 19 Gt CO2 by 2030.
This means we need to look at EVERY emission source and avoid it or shift to non carbon emitting energy sources.

“We argue that the mainstream discourse on ADHD, despite scholarly ambitions of describing a “multifactorial” condition, tends to shift the focus from a relational perspective on the subject, to a focus on the object, where phenomena such as attention, impulsivity, and executive functioning, are regarded as static traits of the brain, rather than a reflection of stress, social disadvantage, or lack of learned skills.”
This is one of my main issues with a lot of disorders. It’s relentless focus on individual differences often misses the picture. There’s a huge bi-directional relationship with environment, social standing, poverty, etc.
A lot of ADHD traits are vastly reduced when people with ADHD start to believe in themselves, and give themselves permission to do things in a way that makes sense to them.
Discovering you have ADHD marks the beginning of a process to re-educate yourself on how to live your life according to your rules.
When you figure out what works for you, it’s like someone handed you cheat codes at an extremely difficult game you’ve been struggling to beat.
By today’s standards he seems mild. Even Obama praised him. Along with Lincoln, Republicans trot Ronald Reagan out every time Democrats praise the communication wizardry of Obama, Clinton, or Kennedy, or the stalwart composition of FDR or integrity of Truman. In reality, Reagan was an impenetrable facade of congeniality who was quite hostile to civil rights.
