@dan
Pffffeew. Had to read it a few times over to understand this is a ->preparation<- holiday and not the summit location itself.

Good to understand the summit is in Munich itself....

@Dan
in reply to Eelco Mulder 🇪🇺

@voorstad @dan So Sorry for the confusion! We had our yearly Nextclouders off-site to plan the next year of all things Nextcloud - with the Summit as a focus! Looking back, it's clear our enthusiasm in the moment lead to a bit of confusion — sorry about that!

For added clarity: The Nextcloud Summit is June 5th 2025 Munich, Germany

I'm going to suggest that these are great on a local terminal, but the original commands may be better when using a remote terminal (particularly with a low bandwidth connection) and all that's practical with low resource embedded devices.

By all means, use the new tools, just saying users should learn the old ones too.

Does make sense in a way... @brave is the only cross-platform #FOSS browser that comes with an #adblocker and non-Big Tech search engine out of the box. Defaults matter, @mozillaofficial : ) I still support the your good stuff, btw.

Hopefully, #Midori by @astian can be the second one especially as it's not based on Chromium.

I'm proudly self-hosting Nextcloud since 2018. In that time, I've upgraded continuously from Nextcloud 13 to 30, transitioning early on from SQLite to MariaDB, all thanks to @crits's fantastic guides and scripts. Along the way I've upgraded MariaDB and PHP as required. (I have another PHP upgrade scheduled before I upgrade to 31.)

I only have two daily users, but by now I have a high level of trust that Nextcloud will continue to serve our needs for file storage, address book, calendar (and more) into the future.

in reply to Amin Girasol

@fluidlogic @crits Wow, thank you for expressing how happy you've been with using Nextcloud for so long - with many more years to come!

@fluidlogic @crits

Yeah, that would be cool if you did not start enshittification early with all the AI stuff you're doing.

We never get any response from you on these topics.

Looks like you only read positive comments.

Thats unfortunate. Things we dont like also allow one to improve.

in reply to Nextcloud 📱☁️💻

"stable" as in my desktop client keeps harrassing me about failed attempts to sync a .md file created with Nexcloud web UI. I mean, this is use case 001. And Nextcloud fails at it so badly I am considering migrating to something else entirely.
Just drop all of your AI bullshit and maybe get file sync to work flawlessly first?

1/ NIH-funded research has come under a new level of fiscal scrutiny under Trump, sending shock waves through biomedical research.

As Nick Gilpin writes, at the core of these cuts is one question: Is it a worthwhile investment for the US taxpayer?

Trying to upgrade my recording setup. A Patronizer donated a really nice mic, but I need a space.

Moving to the bathroom reduced background noise, but made recordings sound hollow. I have zero cash for padding right now, but I do have a pressure bar and a tablecloth. We'll try that.

in reply to Michael W Lucas

What mic is that?

Also, given your environment you might benefit from something like this:

My at-home algal cultivation hobby is going well. I am surprised thst soil samples are the best for growing new green algae - more so than pond water.

No carbon source is interesting - I wonder if you use defined media that means lower chance of contamination as well. That would be great for a teaching model too.

in reply to naturepoker

@naturepoker this is Bolds Basal Media - fairly standard. I buy it as a premixed powdet at phytotech. Some bacteria still grow, but not too much to swamp out the algal colonies

What silliness.

It’s literally Valve’s plan to officially put out SteamOS 3 for more devices. The upcoming Beta was announced only recently too: gamingonlinux.com/2025/01/valv…

Valve have said repeatedly, for years, this was their plan.

This stupid fear pushing is ridiculous.

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

Agreed that the article's contention is silly. Valve might not even WANT to make hardware, but doing so makes the Steam store more attractive. Other handhelds using Steam will mean more money. The money Valve makes off of Steam Deck sales must be a rounding error compared to the game sales.

in reply to It's FOSS

A typical artificial intelligence that will twist everything.
It's a good tool.. But how the market uses it - stop the planet, I'll get off it.

As the day ends, the Trump gang is not backing off an inch from its use of Signal, in blatant violation of the Federal Records Act. Democrats haven't yet focused on it; nor has most of the press.

But Josh Marshall gets it: "These are disappearing communications. They won’t be in the National Archives. Future administrations won’t know what happened. There also won’t be any records to determine whether crimes were committed."

Postbox Add-Ons for Friendica

in reply to Hypolite Petovan

Well, still, there'd be no reason not to strip out the [class] wrapper since other platforms can't use it anyway. There isn't anything similar in Markdown so far as I know, which might be why the raw BBcode is getting through to Disapora? I'm guessing it's missing the conversion from BBcode [class] to Markdown syntax. Which should be conversion to nothing. I'd check for it myself but I have no clue where the processing for other platforms even is in the Friendica code.

New: Fediverse Report 109

This week, an essay about #Bluesky's proposal for setting user preferences on their accounts. This allows people to indicate how they want their data to be handled off-protocol. I wrote about how the #fediverse can improve on this, using its strengths of many different communities, each with its own culture and values.

Also:
- Next week is the digital conference @fediforum
- A research dataset to compare Threads and Mastodon users

Read at: fediversereport.com/fediverse-…

This entry was edited (8 months ago)
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron yeah, but that does not cover everything. Especially such more interesting cases as the mastodon threads research dataset that was just released.

Regardless, the essay is about who sets the default values, and that this decision should be delegated to server admins, and not made by software platforms such as mastodon itself

in reply to Connected Places

Mastodon asks the user after sign-up what their preference is. And of course different platforms can handle this differently, e.g. if Threads has no expectations of being able to participate without appearing in discovery feeds, they would default to true.

The "federated" service that isn't federated. Which is owned by one company. 🤔 (I know folks like it, hi all of you through the bridge... but it is not owned by the people, it is owned by one single company).
in reply to Eugen Rochko

Right. That's kind of the point! The proto-fediverse was dominated by a VC-funded startup -- just like today's ATmosphere. And eight to ten years later the next-generaiton protocols (originally also developed by a corporation) got refined and adopted by a standards bodies -- just like will probably happen with AT Proto.

And presumably just as somebody from a Meta-funded non-profit has repeatedly shut down criticisms of Meta on the W3C ActivityPub mailing list, at some point somebody from a Bluesky-funded non-profit will try to shut down criticisms of Bluesky on whatever standards group is trying to take things forward.

There's a lot to critique with Bluesky but many of the critques apply to the ActivityPub fediverse as well.
