NO KINGS 2.0 US Expatriates Melbourne Australia.
I was kind of wanting to hold the "NO KINGS since 1776" poster, but I gave away all my posters from the last NO KINGS event, and everything for this one except the latte poster. That's all right, I'm the only one who understood the latte poster.

the head has become a bit of an icon, turning up in all sorts of places including Kneecap's concert
abc.net.au/news/2025-03-17/sto…

it's part of an ongoing series of statue beheadings (Capt Cook and Queen Vic are also targets) as protest against the theft and colonisation of Aboriginal land. No-one minds the Irish lads using it for much the same purpose regarding their land.

in reply to Muse

Wow! I was going to say that around here there are many who do not like the Franciscian who established the California missions, Junipero Serra - who, by the way, is now an official saint of the Catholic church.

Anyway, I was going to suggest that no one would complain if the giant, weird statue of him on Interstate 280 were to be beheaded.

Apparently they did one better - they took the entire statute.

Why do you have a SATA SSD in the picture when NVME is much better?

Hidden inside every growing hypha lies a microscopic powerhouse — the #Spitzenkörper.
It’s not just a blob at the fungal tip — it’s the traffic controller, architect, and GPS of fungal growth. 🍄
This video will uncover how this mysterious vesicle cluster orchestrates the very architecture of life beneath our feet.

Kin selection has sparked debate for decades.

Now, a landmark study offers a generalised version of Hamilton’s rule, capturing the messy, nonlinear reality of evolution and cooperation.

GenAI and what it does to the brain.

Truly excellent "long read" article about genAI and what it does to those who come to rely on it. Well researched, with insightful quotes from thoughtful people.

Good science/tech journalism used to be like that, but on AI topics this has become rare. So much easier for the salaried writer of a mainstream paper just to follow the hype.

The author, Sophie McBain, is listed as a "freelance writer" for Guardian, Times and New Statesman. I am glad she's kept her free mind.

after far too much time, i have now seen the entire star wars trilogy. i watched the 4Kxx versions, so i cannot speak to mr. lucas's true vision with the CGI snootles and that guy who shot that other guy.

quick reviews:

episode IV: a classic, the start is a little slow, but great all the way through, compelling characters and great (if infrequent) action scenes, endlessly quotable. 8/10

episode V: felt kind of meandering to me, they made C-3P0 way more annoying, and then introduced an insufferable little green man in case C-3P0 wasn't annoying enough, VFX have greatly improved however. 6/10

episode VI: my favourite, only just beating out VI, pretty much full throttle the whole way through, even better VFX (the bit where they're speeding through the jungle blew my mind), yoda is considerably less annoying to the point where i feel kinda bad about finding him so irritating before, would be perfect if not for the ewoks, they maybe shouldn't have let [spoiler] off the hook so easy though. 9/10

I am fascinated by how viruses evolve - and not just since #SARSCoV2 has shown us at the global stage how consequential virus evolution can be for us.
In my new story in Science I got to explore how researchers are probing deeper into the past with old RNA virus genome.
So a thread…

"A glass flask is as much about what it is as it is about what it is not; it is as much about the vessel blown into form by the glassmaker — and all the material qualities and technological, political, and socioeconomic histories that made that act of creation possible — as it is about the specific geometry of absence that it comes to delimit. Certain kinds of reactions can take place in that flask because of all the others that are excluded from it."

— Eduardo Kohn: How Forests Think Toward An Anthropology Beyond The Human, pp. 35-35

This section on absence is interesting. I've never thought about technologies for what they exclude by being in the world, more what they create or change.

Claude Skills are awesome, maybe a bigger deal than MCP

in reply to Simon Willison

Totally agree with your buried lede: Claude Code is truly a general purpose agent. I started using it for coding but now use it for editing transcripts and other text based tasks, at which it is far better than the chat GUI.

Also thank you for llm, it is becoming a good pal. It'd be rad to have skills-like functionality for that.
