Well this is disappointing.

Adobe Is Ruthlessly Killing Off Software That Animators Around The World Are Using Every Day

On a page morbidly-titled "End of Life FAQ", the company writes:

Adobe Animate will no longer be available to download for new customers, beginning March 1, 2026. Enterprise customers can access the application, download their content, and receive technical support until March 1, 2029. For all other customers, technical support, application access, and the ability to download content will be available until March 1, 2027.

in reply to Muse

I left Aldus just before they got bought by Adobe. Not because of that, but anyway I never was much of an artist so never got to fall in love with Illustrator, and never really liked much of their other stuff. Nowadays Software-Ass, A Service? just fills me with rage.
in reply to Muse

I don't need to love software. I need to get whatever is in the circus going on inside my thick skull out into some representation of reality in an orderly procedural fashion that doesn't include dealing with software defects

Hello brains trust!

My fairy wand as the Wattle Fairy Godmother is more of a walking stick. It is both cute and badass! Don't mess with fairies with big wands! hehehe!

For seven years the ceramic bird glued to the top has held steady. Last year it came off. I asked people what to use in order to re-attach it. A particular glue was suggested as being extra tough. It was a two-step thingo. It lasted one day at the festival for which I needed it, but by late afternoon, someone pointed out that my bird was hanging by a gooey thread. So, I removed her before she could fall off and possibly break.

Does anyone here have any ideas how I can attach a ceramic bird to a rubber cap on a wooden staff?

in reply to Muse

I have a memory of hearing that people have used Ocotillo to make fences. I suppose, by using plate armor gauntlets to handle them. Anyway something like Willow sticks, the fences root in the soil and you have a living "barbed wire" barrier.
in reply to Muse

Attempts are made to use primroses for a similar barrier. I hate trying to clear up after that, raspberries and locust too. Not a pretty. Spanish bayonet is also a fun one for the unaware.

the GNU project is the biggest bunch of complete whackjobs ever to churn out a halfway viable open source product, and just based on their general philosophy and approach towards software developers who are not themselves, even if HURD wasn't a complete joke i wouldn't use anything they had made if i had a choice

i think that 99% of insults are pure projection.

the names people call you are the things they fear in themselves.

in reply to Shane

I don't know. I didn't think so until I read your post, and then I started to hope it. It is a nice idea, to think we can be nice to ourselves too.
in reply to Fionnáin

@ephemeral

ah, well...that is something i struggle with, tbh. being nice to myself, i mean. i'm learning, but there's a lot of unlearning to do first & a lot of letting go.

may we all find that harmony and that peace 😀

What would you rather have governing your Mastodon server?

  • Human admin with tech skills (94%, 65 votes)
  • Deterministic admin bot managing voting systems (4%, 3 votes)
  • LLM admin agent trained on a written constitution (1%, 1 vote)
69 voters. Poll end: 2 days ago

in reply to Nathan Schneider

95% prefer human management to rule-by-chatbot...who woulda thunk it? 🤯

Personally, it feels like we're doing alright with our committees of humans approach - an option oddly not represented on your poll. I'm surprised even 5% would want a DAO or an LLM to get involved.

in reply to Jzero

Committees of humans FTW, but I think it is also telling that we are in a tiny minority, and control by founder or techie remains the norm.
in reply to Nathan Schneider

I took option 2 to mean something like: things of greater consequence could be formally signed off by more people, like defederating from a big instance, doing a system upgrade, appointing new admins/mods, etc. (Routine mod actions could still be done solo)

Sure, as long as there is a single server, rogue sysadmin still a threat - but it does not happen often. Let's push sysadmin further toward "titular" power. (i.e. option 2 can be DAO-less)

in reply to Doug Webb FOSDEM

Yes, that's right! The idea there would be that a bot would manage voting systems, etc. So more participatory, potentially, than 1.

in reply to Nathan Schneider

well then we need to think about how to describe that so people don't think DAO straight away...
in reply to Nathan Schneider

Mine and 95% of people's. We don't want DAOs, NFTs, or "AI Agents" in our tech, or in our orgs.
in reply to Jzero

I don't see these technologies as fundamentally different from using incorporation statutes and contracts enforced by cops and prisons. But we've had this exchange before, and no need to rehash it.

Whatever the underlying technologies, I think we agree that our communities should seek to focus on the human skills and relationships, and let the underlying infrastructures only be an enabler of those.

in reply to Alex Rodríguez

I think it is because setting up a system like Social.coop requires a lot of effort, technical prowess, and patience. It's great for people who are deeply aligned with democratic practice. But for people more focused on other things, it's a high price to pay for founders to have less control in the end.

I think more widespread democratic practice online will require a) making starting up comparably easy to feudalism, and b) establishing norms that it is the right thing to do.

What are y'all's favorite British authors? I need to find some to research for my next English project. I don't really have a preference on work, I'm open to everything! Right now the only one I plan on doing some research on is Virginia Woolf (my fav)
in reply to noah christopher

Richard Adams, George Eliot, Mary Shelley, John Milton, Arthur Conan Doyle, Tolkien, Samuel Butler, Jonathan Swift, George Orwell, Douglas Adams, Samuel Johnson, Aldous Huxley

If you read through Woolfe's Books & Portraits, you'll get a taste of a lot of really interesting english writers(although some are american). I discovered a bunch through that little book.

Thanks to everyone who came to visit our stand at #fosdem . We showed off a couple of new devices this year like the PineVoice home assistant speaker and the new PineTime Pro prototype. A lot of the discussion topics we had at FOSDEM will make it into a new community blog post. Including what this year will look like considering DRAM prices.

We had a lot of fun meeting you all, safe travels everyone!

The prosecutor's office said both Musk and former X chief executive officer Linda Yaccarino had also been summoned to appear at hearings in April as part of its probe.
