Happy birthday to #geochemist Charles David Keeling (1928 - 2005) whose decades long observations of CO2 in air samples from Mauna Loa Observatory were some of the 1st direct data to show the human contribution to greenhouse effect & global warming. The 'Keeling Curve' (in copper & red) shows both the seasonal variations (the wiggles) & the strong upward trend with time as the greenhouse gas built up in the atmosphere. 🧵1/

It’s #EarthDay & I’m giving a talk all about the global food system & its impact on the environment.
The agricultural sector is one of the most significant + immediately scalable places to have impact.

How food and farming will determine the fate of planet Earth
Agriculture has disrupted the planet more than anything we have ever done, including burning fossil fuels. A sustainable future depends on recognizing this fact – and radically changing how we farm and eat.Project Drawdown

It bears mentioning that the reason the #penguin chicks are so hesitant (to jump) is b/c this is typically done from FAR lower heights (often off a ground-level ice sheet), not a 50' cliff.
They are having to do this b/c so much of the lower ice has melted. 😞 #GlobalWarming #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis

Maybe you can just summarise this by saying:
We won't solve climate change, extinction of species, excessive extractive practises etc. etc. if we don't tackle ecological #overshoot.
Which we can't in the short run, so I guess we're pretty much doomed to a worse case scenario: a #collapse in the very near future (actually already happening now.)
Handling that scenario the best we can is what #CrashCourse is about.
