Ethical AI-as-a-service? 💡

Nextcloud Assistant 2.0 has a lot of new features in store, but there's more! We are working with several European cloud providers to enable Nextcloud Assistant as a service for Nextcloud Hub users.

Stay tuned!

Look at the consistency of these responses! Wow!

Meanwhile, Nextcloud users still cannot set the "Calendar" app to show times in 24-hour format. 🤣 🤣 🤣

Are you starting to feel a little bit of disconnect from the community yet?

What jobs are we preparing students for by boosting their writing productivity with AI? After shedding 40% of its workforce, the gaming site Gamurs posted an ad last June for an editor to write 250 articles per week. That’s a new article every 10 minutes, at $4.25 per article.

As @novomancy has noted, AI is only the accomplice here. This clickbait nightmare is the logical conclusion of the ad-supported web.

Travis Rieder's new book, Catastrophe Ethics, "aims to advise the well-intentioned, morally anxious & philosophically curious person" confronting the questions about whether our personal choices about the environment, technology, & justice matter.

Sounds like an interesting read: the-tls.co.uk/articles/catastr… #books #science #philosophy

Time for @ByttenStudio to take a victory lap; they just buried their competition with Capricorpse!

Seriously though, just play @CassetteBeasts I have so few complaints on it and it's probably one of my favorite indie games of all time, and it's made with Godot, works on Linux natively, and the developers are on the fediverse! Not to mention, they seem very receptive to fans, unlike that other company...

'However, work on a variety of systems, such as RNA secondary structures & protein–DNA interactions, has shown that robustness can facilitate evolvability under certain conditions. Specifically, robustness to mutations can lead to numerous sequences with similar functions that differ by few mutations.'

Sounds almost too good to be true. Who's actually making this though? I can't even find that on the website, and the github only has one contributor who's a bit light on info.

You know what, I can absolutely respect this take, he's not dancing around the subject trying to be nice so that he doesn't hurt anyone's feeling, he's willing to step up and just be an asshole so that he can say what a lot of people are think about OSS world.hey.com/dhh/open-source-…

most of the work on projects is fixing bugs/ patching CVEs and ensuring back compatibility. it is a small group who have bug fixing skills that contribute the most and/or add to the main architecture of a project, which does give them more weight in any say.

FOSS is indeed a gift and i love when repos have the 'buy me a coffee' option as a way to give an option for compensation.

feels wrong to read him imply that other human beings are "parasite".

Ooh I just noticed that the PolicyKit website is much improved—nice work @axz and team! policykit.org/
in reply to Nathan Schneider

Is it decentralised though?
I think democracy without decentralisation is toothless.
in reply to Christmas Lights

@light decentralized in what sense? That word can mean nearly anything. The project is open-source and plausibly self-hostable, I believe.
in reply to Nathan Schneider

I mean in the sense of running on a network of nodes rather than a single server.

I don't see how you can enforce the political system so it doesn't devolve into a dictatorship with the system admin in charge if/when he/she goes rogue otherwise.

in reply to Nathan Schneider

@light I can't see the original message but yes, self-hosting is totally possible!

Also if interested in fully technically decentralized, there is a recent paper just out that removes the need for a governance server and does everything on clients using the MLS protocol: james.grimmelmann.net/files/ar…

I wholeheartedly agree with you on this (the message, not the title). It's why when I first wanted to donate to support Linux desktop I gave it to KDE cause I use/love KDE.
I wrote a post to encourage people to consider supporting projects they use.

phanpy.social is a pretty incredible Mastodon client. Entirely web based, looks great on mobile and desktop, you can configure your shortcuts that appear above or below the river of news.

Some screenshots from my own account: good notifications page, different kinds of toots get a different status, plus Boosts are shown in their own carousel.

I've heard one developer made all this, it's pretty incredible.

Hey #believeinfilm friends,

There's a film photographers' competition deadline coming up with a $1,000 cash prize for the first place (and other prizes, inc. exhibition).

It's called Analog Sparks. Entry fees range from $10 to $25, which is quite reasonable in my opinion.

Do you see a series of sunken rectangles or 16 circles?

This is The Coffer Illusion.

Our brains are geared toward identifying objects & here, “pixels” are grouped to form edges & contours, shapes, & objects. The image is inherently ambiguous so there is no “right” grouping.

Rectangles dominate first for most people - including me, but keep staring & the image may flip to circles.

in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

I briefly saw circles but only in the top two lines, and now I can't see them again!
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

Is this one of those things where you need binocular vision? I stared so long I started seeing colour, but not the faintest vestige of a circle.

Today's discussion and links:

We started off talking about weather, cocoa shortages, and good quality carob.

We moved on to discussing local festivals. Here are the links:

rbb24.de/panorama/beitrag/2024…

Anke Engelke was mentioned because the Montreal Just for Laughs Festival has closed.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anke_Eng…

This led to discussion about amusement parks.

We finally had a chat about odd recipes, or rather what seem like odd recipes.

We then spoke about eyesight and how roads are named!
