Cold Morning at Chefron (2023)

Fun fact - I took this image about 15min before I fell through the ice into the river below... That was the first of two times I would fall into a river in winter that year. I wouldn't recommend.

Thankfully, I was nearby my car and had a sleeping bag and dry clothes ready to change into! Paid off to be prepared.

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

I hope they keep releasing new games (other than CDPR) on GOG. It's usually my first choice because of the no DRM promise. They don't mention that in the FAQ: only old games and CDPR... Although it would be odd to release new games from one studio and not others if they're ostensibly independent
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

I'm not sure what to expect to come out of this.

The only benefit I see is that it is now private and not beholden to shareholders.

Maybe finally this could lead to more Linux support. Simply having Gog Galaxy natively available on Linux would be a huge win in my opinion.

On 26 December 2023, China prohibited the use of CPUs made by US companies Intel and AMD for Chinese government PCs and servers.[15] The country instead approved 18 processors made by Chinese companies Loongson and Phytium. State-owned companies were also instructed to transition towards Chinese hardware by 2027.[15] The ban was part of China's strategy to rely more on its domestically designed options in response to US sanctions and export controls.

Yeap, and they did this in a very bad, irresponsible and unprofessional way.

Linus made it very clear in his keynote speech. Nvida has always been the worst culprit when it comes to stuffing proprietary junk into their drivers & hardware, least compatibility with Linux. Gave them then middle fingure. Team Red (AMD) is the way to go for gaming on Linux... Seems like Nvida have now gone all in on the AI bubble like Microsoft has. I expect the same poor consumer market response (Anger & disgust)

I agree with him! AI is ruining the world with false information and pollution. And now, it is sending fake letters? Do we see where this leads? If AI is now being trained to send letters on its own, that means what? That someday it will be capable of sending letter on our behalf to anyone it wants? I think this situation with AI models is deeply concerning, and needs to somehow get regulated.

I am fascinated by these colors. Among the yellow lichen Polycaulonia polycarpa and gray-green lichen Physcia dubia probably, you can see the tiny pink fungus Illosporiopsis christiansenii, which parasitizes the lichen. I photographed all this on a blackthorn tree (Prunus spinosa) while tasting the blue fruits, which were now frozen and therefore sweet.

DOGE spent $40 million to save a few billion in salaries, but that move backfired by causing $21.7 billion in repair costs and losing over $500 billion in uncollected tax revenue from the wealthy - they don't want the government to work …They’re on a mission to make sure it doesn’t.

‘Almost collapsed’: behind the Korean film crisis and why K-pop isn’t immune

"South Korea’s entertainment dominance appears unshakeable. From BTS conquering global charts to Parasite sweeping the Oscars in 2020 and Korean dramas topping Netflix, Korean popular culture has never been more visible. Exports driven by the country’s arts hit a record $15.18bn (£11bn) in 2024, cementing the country’s reputation as a cultural superpower.

"But inside South Korea, the two industries that helped build the Korean Wave – cinema and K-pop – are now experiencing fundamental transformations, with their survival strategies potentially undermining the creative foundations of their success."

There was a recent poll here about what Desktop OS you use and Linux was the most popular answer. This proves this community is far more technical than your average consumer.

I'm not critical of that, I'm just saying we need to appreciate we aren't representative of that vast majority of people out there. I can't even get "normies" to *consider* joining the fediverse.

I don't want to "chase numbers" I want my family members to be safe but we're doing a terrible job attracting them.

in reply to Scott Jenson

My wife's parents barely know how to operate a computer and they use Linux. I don't think Linux is as strong of an indicator of technical skill as it once was.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron and would she count as Scott's "technical"? Largely people buy a computer, turn it on and use whatever OS is there, but Linux is a choice which starts with even picking the distro. Using it once it's installed? Sure, no problem. My mom can do it too. But I set it up.
in reply to Gavin Chait;

@Gargron and to go deeper on the challenge (having done tech support), I don't think the average person could install Windows or Android from scratch if it didn't come pre-installed. I'm not sure what the equivalent of "pre-installed" would look like for Mastodon?
in reply to Gavin Chait;

@GavinChait Back when they were on Windows she also had to set it up for them. She needed to do less tech support on Linux than on Windows.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron and so we get to the core thing... Who is the entry point, and what is their capacity, and motivation, to be an entry point to Mastodon?

More than 20% of the videos that YouTube’s algorithm shows to new users are “AI slop”
– low-quality AI-generated content designed to farm views, research has found.

The video-editing company Kapwing surveyed 15,000 of the world’s most popular YouTube channels
– the top 100 in every country
– and found that 278 of them contain only AI slop.

Together, these AI slop channels have amassed more than 63 billion views and 221 million subscribers,
-- generating about $117m (£90m) in revenue each year, according to estimates.

The researchers also made a new YouTube account and found that 104 of the first 500 videos recommended to its feed were AI slop.

One-third of the 500 videos were “#brainrot”, a category that includes AI slop and other low-quality content made to monetise attention.
