Got disqualified from the BASIC jam on itch.io

The thing that hurts the most though is everyone complaining that the game required the installation of an emulator (?) and that the instructions for the game were too terse (???)

All the other games were made for windows, so I'm gonna call this a skill issue uwu

in reply to Devine Lu Linvega

@neauoire nah this was my GOBLINS game I wrote for Commodore 64 BASIC.

The reason I was disqualified is that I did not do the game during the jam, but nowhere did it say you had to complete the game during the event.

in reply to '(vidak) _(:3ใ€โˆ )_

Oh okok, that's fair. Yeah jams tend to not like that.

Academics: what is your annual quota for peer reviewing papers, and what proportion of invitations do you reject?

I honestly have no idea what is normal or expected.

in reply to Nathan Schneider

The accompanying question might be โ€ฆ When you review an article:
How much time do you spend with your review? โ€ฆ It is very time consuming to analyze (and overanalyze?), document, and explain proposed changes. I have heard from top brass that it takes an entire weekend every time. โ€ฆ And, as a sane person, I left academia for this reason.
in reply to Caitlin Waddick

Phew, really depends. Usually it takes a couple hours of an evening for me, and then I try to check my biases the next morning.

Thank you so much Eugen! There's no way this could have happened without you and the work you did for years. Juxta the Combinator Cat lore: it's able to use stack combinators as magic abilities. swap allows Juxta to change oppositions with an object as long as nothing is in the way. drop can make objects disappear temporarily, dup can make copies of them temporarily, and quote lets juxta summon a box. Which it obviously sits in.

Abilities can only effect objects roughly around its mass.

A proposal looking to streamline per-user environment variables in Fedora was recently struck down.

itsfoss.com/news/fedora-per-usโ€ฆ

#linux #fedora

in reply to It's FOSS

From reading the post, it's not made clear that shell-specific configuration files should be, and, in fact are, defined per shell. A user was always required to know this, even for sh and csh,.

Also, isn't there already a mechanism for setting user environment variables via systemd? I could be wrong, so could others execute "man environment.d" clear that up for me?

Finally, making setting environment variables more complicated than it already is seems bad. wiki.archlinux.org/title/Envirโ€ฆ

would you mind some more detail or pointers for the very marketing-y "even more secure" phrase?

Is it an "all hands on deck" situation?

I can't find details for any security-relevant even in the change logs - just the titles of the fixed issues aren't too descriptive and don't help judging the urgency.

I feel I need to say something about Artemis as a former NASA employee, Space scientist and engineer.

I hope more than anything that the astronauts get back safely. But let us not be fooled by what this is.

Is it spectacular, yes. Is it a feat of engineering, yes. Does it make any advance in science, no. Does it help mankind explore the universe, dubious at best.

Why exactly are we sending humans to the moon? With our technology we will never send humans much further than Mars. The only way humans can possibly go further is through a scientific breakthrough. Good luck with that when Trump is gutting science.

Human exploration needs money spent on long-term advances - not using the same technology to do what we did before, however, glamorous it is.

So why do this and why do it now? Political theatre, a win for a Trump led NASA if it succeeds.

So I hope all works well and all return safely. But let us be clear what this is and why it is being done.

This is my opinion, I do not represent anyone.

But any improvement is at least a step in the right direction, even if it is positively glacial.

In a terminal shell, if you want to do a recursive operation on dotfiles only, don't do `.*` -- do `.[^.]*` for example, and test with a non-destructive command like `echo` beforehand. Reason: `.*` includes `..`

Democratic lotteries put power in the hands of the people

A democratic lottery fairly selects a group of representatives that matches the makeup of the population. It selects from all citizens who meet basic requirements and are willing and able to serve a limited term.

And because lotteries remove campaigning, they remove parties, politicians, super PACs, and so much of what is tearing America apart.

We can use democratic lotteries instead of elections to fill legislatures like Congress, and to transform how we choose executives like the President.

In recent decades, democratic lotteries have been used hundreds of times to call on citizens to develop policy on challenging issues. And they were central to government in Ancient Athens.

But few have had the chance to see this transformative paradigm for themselves. Until nowโ€ฆ

The US documentary about democratic lotteries is set to be released soon.
