MIT dropped its contract with Elsevier, the huge scientific journal company. Their library instead arranged alternate access to journals and tools for researchers to get them. They’re saving $2 million/year:

"There is an obvious alternative: universities, libraries, and academic funding agencies can cut out the intermediary and directly fund journals themselves, at a far lower cost. This would remove commercial pressures from the editorial process, preserve editorial integrity and make research accessible to all."

Congratulations to a Faculty Committee at the University of Rhode Island for calling for the closure of the university's #OpenAccess Fund which supports APCs. The Committee argues that "rather than covering APC expenses of a small number of URI faculty, OA Fund resources should be redirected toward efforts that will have greater impact."

These actions align with the #BOAI20 Recommendations to move away from APCs.

After a few decades trying to work with the traditional system to reform scientific publishing, several charities have given up, realizing that the multinational oligopoly of Elsevier et al. and conservative prestigious journals have too much of a stranglehold over scholarship to give up their profiteering ways. https://www.science.org/content/article/bold-bid-avoid-open-access-fees-gates-foundation-says-grantees-must-post-preprints #openaccess

New species concept just dropped ... no, wait, it actually seems useful. Wayne Maddison & Jeannette Whitton published in @SystBiol's #DiamondOA BSSB so it's free to read and free to authors. Even if the concept itself doesn't take off, I think lots of lectures are going to use the figures and ideas.

The negotiations of #SwissUniversities "with Elsevier have not yet resulted in a mutually acceptable agreement. As the current agreement ends on 31 Dec 2023, preparations were put in place for a scenario without agreement as of 2024." https://www.swissuniversities.ch/en/themen/digitalisierung/open-access/publisher-negotiations/elsevier

New study: "We find that scientists are overwhelmingly (95%) failing to publish their #code and that there has been no significant improvement over time, but we also find evidence that code sharing can considerably improve #citations, particularly when combined with #OpenAccess publication."

Hi again #Mastodon!
I joined the fediverse when a lot of my community had not migrated from the bird site, so could only partially reconstruct it here using automated tools. If I followed you there and don’t here, say hi and let’s reconnect!

For those who don’t know me, I am a #virologist by training with almost 20 years of experience as a #science #editor, a passion for #microbiology and all science really, #OpenScience #openaccess & people

Have a lovely day everyone

This is how you do #openaccess:
"At an estimated cost of €30 (US$34) per publication, Psicológica can increase its output without incurring substantial extra costs."

Why we think every scholarly organization, but in particular scholarly societies, should not just migrate to #Mastodon, but host their own instances - and what that has to do with the journals many scholarly societies use to generate revenue:

The US National Science Foundation (#NSF) just released the draft update to its #OpenAccess policy, as requested by the #Biden #OSTP (#NelsonMemo).
https://nsf-gov-resources.nsf.gov/2023-06/NSF23104.pdf

I'm digesting it now but wanted it to share first.

Tho released today, it's dated Feb 23, 2023. (Why?)

Some of the #publishers fighting #BookBans and celebrating #PrideMonth are also suing the @internetarchive. "If anything, Pride Month should be the moment in which publishers join librarians in their efforts to make as much knowledge as available as possible to as many people as possible. #OpenAccess is thus an essential tool in the fight for #LGBTQIA+ rights and minority rights in general."

We're also building open, community-owned infrastructure to support #OAbooks with @copim.

We're looking forward to meeting people and getting to know hcommons.social! We might cross-post from Twitter for a bit while we find our feet, but we're excited to find out more about Mastodon as its own space.

Say hi if you're interested in our work!
