In 1951 a tiny piece of tumour was taken, without knowledge or consent, from Henrietta Lacks. The extraordinarily malignant cancer killed her, but in the lab the cells, known as HeLa, continued to live and divide, becoming the first ever functionally immortal human cell line. HeLa was used for numerous scientific advances and her cells are traded around the world for serious money; it is estimated they collectively weigh more than 50 million tons... It's happening! My book about Mastodon and the fediverse is now entering the production phase!

My editor at Oxford is asking what sort of cover image I would like. Any suggestions? Boosts appreciated!

More about the book here:

Over at @sciencemagazine I reviewed @9brandon's marvelous MEET THE NEIGHBORS, about animal lives, animal minds, and ethics of animal-human relating. It's a brilliant book and I hope you'll check it out. #books #bookreview #bookstodon #animals #animalwelfare #animalrights #anthropology #biology https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.adq5698

Twitter used to be our main marketing tool--the primary way we sold books online and got the word out.

These days, not so much.

Please help support us and our authors with a signal boost! We are an independent publisher based in Chennai with books on folklore from different parts of India, graphic novels, ghost encyclopedias, weird horror, pulp fiction in translation, and some pretty strange little zines.

"It's important to remember that the 'drugs' aren't just the pills we stash in our medicine cabinets. Ask yourself this: is it really acceptable that we only bothered to test sex differences for general anesthesia in 1999? Turns out women wake up faster than men, regardless of their age, weight or the dosage they've been given."

From Cat Bohannon's highly recommended book Eve.

Which is how I feel about the #desert in general & I’m fortunate to have visited this one, in particular: White Desert (aka ‘Farrafra’) in #Egypt .

Here’s a #book I wrote about my transporting desert experiences— with #photography 🙏🏼✨

I wonder if she inspired some of the characters in the second to last chapter of Kim Stanley Robinson's "The Years of Rice and Salt"? Can't tell much without giving spoilers away.

I know there's a lot of reading challenges going around, but I wanted to make one of my own centered around how to #DecolonizeYourBookshelf.

I wrote a little blog about the challenge on my site, would love for you to join along! I'm doing it and will share the books I pick for each category!

its day 21 of the harpercollins union strike and still no word from harpercollins execs.

if you want to support they currently have an open letter that you can sign to voice your support.

making the entry pay for publishing prohibitively low means that people who dont have extra social safety nets are essentially barred entry. which is bad for ALL OF US.

I signed and you should too: https://linktr.ee/hcpunion

Wanted to share that my favorite book on disability this year is free / open access from Duke U Press!

Black Disability Politics by Sami Schalk deep dives into historical Black activism to examine how the work embodied Black disability politics, often in a way white disability activists have not recognized. The author also interviews some of today's Black #DisabilityJustice advocates.

Read or download it here:
