I don’t like to mention that rich guy over at #Twitter, but he’s rambling on about #ClimateChange & agriculture, which is in my wheelhouse. And he is also unabashedly & absurdly wrong.
Misinformation on climate change is irresponsible & dangerous, so let’s be clear:
25% to 30% of global emissions come from our #food system.
As UT Austin’s Michael Webber describes, agriculture is a major cause, victim and - importantly - meaningful solution to #climate change.

There it is: Germany's second big public broadcaster is teasing, that it will start posting on #Mastodon tomorrow as @ZDF That account has 3200 follower, on #Twitter its 1,4 million.
I'm sure it will start to grow quickly and get a headstart on the other big public broadcaster #ARD, which has labeled its first account a test (@NDR).
Of course it would also be a headstart on the big public broadcasters, that are arguing with #Twitter.

While #NPR and #PBS have quit #Twitter (without mentioning #Mastodon however), Germany's biggest public broadcaster #ARD and #ZDF are not only already testing their own instances for quite a while (dev.ard.social/public/local & zdf.social/public/local): The first proper account is now live and posts news articles from northern Germany – @NDR
Let's see, if NPR and PBS find their way here. Oh and where is the #BBC?

Verification on #Twitter was sought after because it conveyed status. Now a blue check is meaningless or even suggests that those paying for it have fallen for a scam.
The Verge explains:
“The basic truth of cool, as anyone can tell you, is that trying to be cool is not cool, and paying to be cool is for suckers.”

Elon Musk’s obsession with blue checks is a verified problem
The verification mark originally was meant as a service. Musk is selling it as a status symbol. Unfortunately, that makes it less valuable.Elizabeth Lopatto (The Verge)
The newest Twitter status symbol is who will lose their blue check first. Some of us never had one and remain pure.
"Twitter strikes New York Times’ verified badge on Elon Musk’s orders
Twitter removed the “verified” badge from the New York Times’ main account on Sunday, a move that billionaire owner Elon Musk pushed for overnight after learning that the news organization would not pay for its Twitter Blue service.
The move continues Musk’s years-long grudge against U.S. journalists who have reported critically on him, and it will raise the risks of impersonation. It also contradicts an internal plan, first reported by the Times on Thursday, to keep the badges on for the 10,000 most-followed organizations, regardless of whether they paid."

Twitter’s ad revenue is down 89% and not many users are signing up to its paid subscription. In April, it’s removing “legacy” blue checks and further prioritizing paid accounts.
For Disconnect, I explain that Elon Musk needs this to push more users to subscribe to Twitter Blue so he can pay his $1.5 billion in annual interest payments. But it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen.

“Since Musk took over he has set about dismantling everything that made #Twitter valuable—making it his mission to drive out expertise, scare away celebrities, bully reporters and—on the flip side—reward the bad actors, spammers and sycophants who thrive in the opposite environment: An information vacuum.”

Time for the weekly #Linux and #OpenSource news video!
In this one, we have @frameworkcomputer announcing a 16 inch laptop, with replaceable GPU expansion modules, we have @nextcloud releasing Hub 4, a new version with integrated AI tools, and a lot of updates to the core apps, and we have #Twitter planning to open source their algorithm at the end of the month.
Plus, screen sharing on Wayland should now work for every single app, and more!

Every large brand audience development lead is currently working on a spreadsheet telling them the value of the traffic generated by #Twitter and finding it’s less than $1000 a month, while every brand legal team is creating a template letter to send to Twitter demanding takedown of accounts impersonating their trade marks. Once more, #Musk doesn’t have a clue.
#Twitter devalues its own product!
"the only value of a twitter blue checkmark now is that people might mistake you for someone who is actually notable. if you get rid of every other checkmark, then the twitter blue checkmark literally means nothing."
And this is about to happen on April 1st. You can't make this up!

I rarely post about Musk & #Twitter, but I am currently writing a dissertation related to the spread of misinformation.

Recently I found that quite a few of my #Twitter and #Mastodon followers are working in high-performance #computing (HPC). At first I was surprised because I’m not a #HPC person, even if I love high performance computers. Then I realized that there are quite few overlaps, and one of my best friends is also deeply involved in HPC. My work, #logging, is also a fundamental part of HPC environments.

Large platforms - think #Twitter, #Facebook, etc - are very unresponsive to users. Most famously, Facebook polled its users on whether they wanted to be spied on. Faced with overwhelming opposition to commercial surveillance, Facebook ignored the poll result and cranked the #surveillance dial up to a million:

Hi #science #research #mastodon community! A few days ago, a post of mine recieved a lot of attention. Thanks for the engagement and the very interesting suggestions! neuromatch.social/@LeonDLotter…
On #Twitter, I loved the common practice of writing threads explaining new #preprints and #papers in an understandable way.
I uttered my concern that through the chronological timeline here people might miss interesting science. A solution would be to agree on names for hashtags and/or a.gup.pe groups to ease tracking these "paper threads".
Following tags were named more then once: #newPaper #paperThread #preprint #researchPaper #mastoPrint #tootPrint.
Also, there was #tootorial, but that might be a slightly different category?
I heard people like participation - so let's do a poll! What's your favourite tag for threads explaining research articles? 📊 Multiple choices possible!

The future of #Mastodon is up to us.
We choose the content & what to highlight & celebrate. On #Twitter & other platforms, we became used to posting & expecting the most infuriating/outrageous/triggering news. It became sport & spectacle & promoted narcissism.
We have an opportunity to actively share in other ways here. Curate curiosity. Build on each other’s ideas.
@Gargron & team have given us a chance to do things differently. So far, I’m optimistic.
“I want better for #Twitter than the awful existence that Musk has charted. But mostly, I want better for us.
Figuring out places to be, ways to keep connections alive, find new methods of sharing experiences with others has been my driving factor…My hope is that we won't simply replace one monolithic platform with another….That we'll try new things, build new things, find new ways to connect that don't simply replicate the patterns of the past but instead move toward…”
Agree. And a large part of this problem is the general dumpster fire that is social media. 'They were so pre-occupied with whether they could, they never stopped to think whether they should!'
Putting all humans in touch with each other without meaningful oversight or guardrails is observably short-sighted. I believe this has contributed to millions of deaths + serious atrocities, up to & including genocide. Now with #musk , leaving #twitter is a no brainer.
