Open source is neither a community nor a democracy
Using open source software does not entitle you to a vote on the direction of the project. The gift you've received is the software itself and the freedom of use granted by the license.world.hey.com
I mean in the sense of running on a network of nodes rather than a single server.
I don't see how you can enforce the political system so it doesn't devolve into a dictatorship with the system admin in charge if/when he/she goes rogue otherwise.

Hey #believeinfilm friends,
There's a film photographers' competition deadline coming up with a $1,000 cash prize for the first place (and other prizes, inc. exhibition).
It's called Analog Sparks. Entry fees range from $10 to $25, which is quite reasonable in my opinion.

Do you see a series of sunken rectangles or 16 circles?
This is The Coffer Illusion.
Our brains are geared toward identifying objects & here, “pixels” are grouped to form edges & contours, shapes, & objects. The image is inherently ambiguous so there is no “right” grouping.
Rectangles dominate first for most people - including me, but keep staring & the image may flip to circles.

So now SpaceX, with no working spacesuit, and years behind on it's multi-billion dollar moon lander, is lobbying NASA to go to the Hubble Space Telescope.
"A successful private mission could improve Hubble's ability to point at celestial objects and, by boosting its orbit, extend its life by years... however, an accident could leave the multibillion-dollar telescope broken — or, even more tragically, tethered to the dead bodies of the astronauts sent to repair it."
Starlink is killing Hubble
Something about this plan to move Hubble, didn't make sense. If the space telescope still has 10 years of useful life, why this risky SpaceX mission to boost it's orbit now?
Well it turns out the main thing threatening the utility of Hubble is... wait for it... SpaceX Starlink satellites, which orbit just above Hubble constantly "photo-bombing" the images. Within a few years there will be so many Starlinks that Hubble will be useless.

Mesmerising microbes: bacteria as you’ve never seen it before – in pictures
“As a side hustle he manipulates and photographs the microbial world; his images are collected in a book, Beautiful Bacteria. Taking bacteria from substances such as wastewater, dental plaque or kimchi, Danino lets them multiply in a petri dish, adding dyes. The results are artworks differing from the digital enhancements often made in scientific photography to make images more informative.”

in reply to Brodie Robertson • • •Does anyone aside from him feel that community implies democracy or equal footing participants? Thats deffinitly not my definition or association. Maybe a commune fits that bill, but to me a community is just people who form a network of social relations.
Just seems like a bit of word twisting so he can call vocal dissidents of a project entitled parasites. Which is fine because obviously thats something they can become. But a community is not a collection of people that you like or even people who mesh well together, that would be a clique. Communities are inherrently ecosystems with complete with cliques and internal conflict and sometimes competition even.
And I don't think anyone thinks there is a consensus or a governing body that designates that the open source community as a whole is a democracy. Imo if a project is struggling to establish their desired relation with the users, that is likely a flaw in their own communication rather than the language common to the community.

in reply to Brodie Robertson • • •yeah, no doubt about that. There's a kind of person who will buy an ice cream cone, drop it, and then demand they get a new one for free due to the inconvenience. I don't think it has anything to do with whatever that guy was ranting about, probably the opposite actually.
The cry baby free ice cream routine is not something that people who value community or democracy for that matter do.

in reply to Brodie Robertson • • •interesting, as a lot of projects also use "contribute" on different requests from users. Sort of a speech enabling them to get resources/free help on some way.
I think there can be a middle ground, where we acknowledge a leadership but we always have/have had the option to contribute IN ANY CAPACITY we are capable of, unlike closed software where all they want to receive is money. The only limitation is our actual ability (we have to be good enough).

in reply to Brodie Robertson • • •most of the work on projects is fixing bugs/ patching CVEs and ensuring back compatibility. it is a small group who have bug fixing skills that contribute the most and/or add to the main architecture of a project, which does give them more weight in any say.
FOSS is indeed a gift and i love when repos have the 'buy me a coffee' option as a way to give an option for compensation.
