The creator of Newgrounds has considered adding ActivityPub support to join the fediverse but is worried it would make their hosting fees untenable by “serving files to millions of people on third party apps“. Can anyone with more knowledge on how this works help them?

newgrounds.com/bbs/topic/15375…

Having Newgrounds on the Fediverse would be incredible. Newgrounds has a huge art community, many features not available on any platform and has been around the longest (1999)

That seems like a misunderstanding of the infrastructure. Each fediverse server (at least ones powered by Mastodon) caches a copy of the media files to serve to their own users. The increase on bandwidth for the origin server is minimal, comparatively, since there's at most 20k servers, instead of millions of people.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

Would you agree that Newgrounds has more to worry about if it becomes an activitypub *client* (because if users are receiving remote posts they might have to pay for locally cached images) than if it serves *out* of newgrounds to other activitypub servers?

Really makes laugh - looking at those folk who say Ms Harris is 'all style, no substance'. 'Cos they themselves can best be described as 'NO style, NO substance'.

When worrying about the harms from deploying AI, it’s issues like this that have caused and will cause the most harm. Not the AI suddenly turning into the machines from the Matrix and enslaving humanity.

The system that was meant to analyze income and health information to automatically determine eligibility for benefits simply didn’t work and often failed to load the correct data to analyze. 🤦🏾‍♂️

'The prompt myth is a technical myth at the heart of the LLM boom. It was a simple but brilliant design stroke: rather than a window where people paste text and allow the LLM to extend it, ChatGPT framed it as a chat window. We’re used to chat boxes, a window that waits for our messages and gets a (previously human) response in return. In truth, users provide words that dictate what we get back. With shadow prompting, a phenomenon I wrote about in Tech Policy Press last year, our words are altered before reaching the model. The prompt window suggests more control over these systems than we have.'

Open Social Web / fediverse folks: with Elon Musk's fight with the Brazilian government likely to result in X being down in Brazil, there's an opportunity to invite more folks to the fediverse.

Is anyone working on plans to recruit and welcome people here, while ensuring their safety & quality of community? It's an obvious opportunity that can be planned for.

🎶 Catman, Catman, does anything a Catman wants 🎶
in reply to Muse

Kitten Man, Kitten Man
Cute ball of fur rests upon his hand
Plays with yarn, chases flies
Makin' biscuits of every size
Meow!
Here comes the Kitten Man!

Is he cute? His paw goes boop
Even though daily his box you'll scoop
Runs 'round the house, in a whirl
Then upon your warm lap he'll curl
Meow!
There goes the Kitten Man!

In the deep of night, when the shadows unfurl
Like a treasured pet, at your side he will curl!

Kitten Man, Kiiten Man
Your friendly neighborhood Kitten Man
Let daily stress be ignored
Companionship is his reward
To him, life is a great big cat toy
To cuddle a ball of warm joy
Just ask the Kitten Man!

I have been asked this, and yes, sign-ups and overall traffic from #Brazil are picking up today, following the #X ban. Bem-vindos ao Mastodon!
#brazil #x
in reply to Eugen Rochko

Aug 10, 10 sign-ups from #Brazil. Aug 28, 152 sign-ups from Brazil. Today, 4.2k sign-ups from Brazil. Portuguese (Brazil) has already entered the list of top 8 active languages for the last 30 days.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

Not nearly as big as the move to Bluesky, but its definitely an increase nonetheless.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

Twitter was blocked in Brazil yesterday for not respecting the Supreme Court's order to block far-right accounts for spreading false information and inciting undemocratic acts. I think that the administrators of the instances here at Mastodon should be very attentive to this diaspora.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

is this exclusively for this instance or for the network as a whole?
in reply to Eugen Rochko

There should be a list of native Brazilian Fediverse instances to make it easiest for our new friends from Brazil to come here and find their communities. I hope that is being highlighted everywhere they are finding homes, 1) that they are welcome indeed, and 2) that we will help them find places they can express their cultural uniquenesses.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

I just started getting traffic warnings from my Bluesky PDS, and Mastodon is a close second. Holy crap!
in reply to Eugen Rochko

LB: so much for "fedi is dying, Brazilians aren't coming here after the twitter ban!"
in reply to Eugen Rochko

of course, the vast majority are going to Bluesky. how does that make you feel?

LLMs have a strong bias against use of African American English

Feedback gets rid of overt biases but leaves subtle racism intact.

"As far back as 2016, work on AI-based chatbots revealed that they have a disturbing tendency to reflect some of the worst biases of the society that trained them. But as large language models have become ever larger and subjected to more sophisticated training, a lot of that problematic behavior has been ironed out. For example, I asked the current iteration of ChatGPT for five words it associated with African Americans, and it responded with things like "resilience" and "creativity."

"But a lot of research has turned up examples where implicit biases can persist in people long after outward behavior has changed. So some researchers decided to test whether the same might be true of LLMs. And was it ever."
