Successful #permacomputing expriment: an android phone as a web server.
Termux doing all the heavy lifting here, but going through the setup has been quite good fun.
- Samsung Android phone
- Termux + the various other needed packages, primarily Termux:Boot, termux-api-*, cronie
- IPV6rs - wireguard for http access
- Tmate for deterministic remote ssh access (could not get ssh to work with IPV6rs, unclear why)
- Networking is via the onboard Sim Card.
To-do / question:
- why does it not work from cellular connections? Assuming there is an issue in the IPV6rs configs, but cannot figure out why, works fine from non-cellular connections
- publish documentation / cite sources
- test out in Wild Nephin National Park, plugged in to solar rig at Ballycroy
Must add: I was hoping to achieve all this on a #postmarketOS device. I have pmOS running on a Samsung A3, but was never able to get the modem to work for it to connect to cellular.
Did a hard pivot to this Android setup, and enjoyed the process, but I did so because I could not figure out how complex it would be to get pmOS on this newer Samsung A40.
One issue I did run into was that the newer Samsung was networked locked. I had to apply to Three.ie (cellular provider) to get the device unlocked.
(In retrospect, chances are that this was also happening on the older Samung A3, but tried another sim card from another provider and was not able to get a data connection.)
Remote.materialsmatter.ie (no SSL yet, http only for now) is actually remote!
Solar rig has been performed very well, it is hugely overkill for this setup, but good to have 30 days of testing confirmation.
Gives me no issue to add a heltec v3 #meshtastic node to the power draw, should be fine.

This Spring I'm documenting the awakening of Pembroke College gardens in Cambridge, UK. Posts will touch on flowering plants, bushes and trees, and their visitors โ largely bees, wasps, flies and butterflies, but also all other critters I happen to stumble upon. Aiming at one post per week.
Posts will appear here:

I only need to know 2 things about the Wisconsin Supreme Court election:
1) Judges are the last reasonable roadblock slowing down the Project 2025 plan.
2) Elon Musk and the Project 2025 crew don't want Susan Crawford to win. They're scared.
Susan Crawford. That's the only name I need to know.
The other person's name doesn't matter. Their platform doesn't matter.
So resist the very human urge to talk about that person and why they are bad.
Because name recognition affects judge elections more than you think. A lot of people are just going to vote for whichever name they've heard most. ๐คท๐ฟโโ๏ธ
Elon is dumping in millions to make sure that as many people have heard that other name as possible.
You can't fight that by also saying that other name.
Talk about this name instead.
Susan Crawford.
That's who they don't want to win.
BINGO!!!

Well, it solves your problem. Soโฆ Yes! That being said, itโs still quite a bit of extra work to solve a (seemingly) trivial problem. So if I were you, Iโd still open up an issue on GitHub in the hopes of this being avoidable altogether.Godot Forum

THIS is worth noting:
"Companies like CoreCivic and GEO Group receive government funding based on the number of people they detain, which is why they lobby for stricter immigration policies. Itโs a lucrative business: CoreCivic made over $560m from Ice contracts in a single year. In 2024, GEO Group made more than $763m from Ice contracts.
"The more detainees, the more money they make. It stands to reason that these companies have no incentive to release people quickly. What I had experienced was finally starting to make sense."

for anyone who was in any of the #GNOME #matrix rooms a week or so ago... the flatpak version of element keeps its cache at ~/.var/app/im.riot.Riot/config/Element/Cache/Cache_Data/. you can use something like wipe to securely erase it.
EDIT: wipe and shred and co. won't work on an SSD. use something like blkdiscard instead.

shred, wipe, et al just won't work on SSDs because of how they function. the best you can do is a tool called blkdiscard which will politely ask the SSD to wipe the file. failing that, you have to wipe the entire SSD
