Iโ€™m currently reading North Woods by Daniel Mason. Itโ€™s an enjoyable & thoughtful story so far. #books
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

I really enjoyed that book. But Danial Masonโ€™s The Winter Soldier was fantastic.
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

Looks very interesting. I have added it to my wish list. One can never have enough books!

๐Ÿงช Meet Lise Meitner: The nuclear physicist who explained atomic fission in 1939, revolutionizing science. Despite her groundbreaking work, her male colleague Otto Hahn received the 1944 Nobel Prize while she was excluded. #womenshistorymonth #STEM

in reply to Gerhard Hallstein

Successful #permacomputing expriment: an android phone as a web server.

remote.materialsmatter.ie

Termux doing all the heavy lifting here, but going through the setup has been quite good fun.

- Samsung Android phone
- Termux + the various other needed packages, primarily Termux:Boot, termux-api-*, cronie
- IPV6rs - wireguard for http access
- Tmate for deterministic remote ssh access (could not get ssh to work with IPV6rs, unclear why)
- Networking is via the onboard Sim Card.

To-do / question:
- why does it not work from cellular connections? Assuming there is an issue in the IPV6rs configs, but cannot figure out why, works fine from non-cellular connections
- publish documentation / cite sources
- test out in Wild Nephin National Park, plugged in to solar rig at Ballycroy

in reply to Colm O'Neill

Must add: I was hoping to achieve all this on a #postmarketOS device. I have pmOS running on a Samsung A3, but was never able to get the modem to work for it to connect to cellular.

Did a hard pivot to this Android setup, and enjoyed the process, but I did so because I could not figure out how complex it would be to get pmOS on this newer Samsung A40.

One issue I did run into was that the newer Samsung was networked locked. I had to apply to Three.ie (cellular provider) to get the device unlocked.

(In retrospect, chances are that this was also happening on the older Samung A3, but tried another sim card from another provider and was not able to get a data connection.)

in reply to Colm O'Neill

Remote.materialsmatter.ie (no SSL yet, http only for now) is actually remote!

Solar rig has been performed very well, it is hugely overkill for this setup, but good to have 30 days of testing confirmation.

Gives me no issue to add a heltec v3 #meshtastic node to the power draw, should be fine.

@John Hummel You are now on the list! Australia will be going off Daylight Saving Time next weekend. So, that will be the last of the time changes for six months!

This Spring I'm documenting the awakening of Pembroke College gardens in Cambridge, UK. Posts will touch on flowering plants, bushes and trees, and their visitors โ€“ largely bees, wasps, flies and butterflies, but also all other critters I happen to stumble upon. Aiming at one post per week.

Posts will appear here:

What do #nanopore #sequencing #bioinformatics folks think about this one? New preprint on hashing raw nanopore signals and using them directly for de-novo assembly.

Hypothetical blow5-to-assembly pipe would be interesting, though figuring it out is way out of my depth.

Anyone know anyone who works at @internetarchive ? I'm trying to see if I can get into this screening, but the RSVP I'd "sold out."

Can I just show up?

I only need to know 2 things about the Wisconsin Supreme Court election:

1) Judges are the last reasonable roadblock slowing down the Project 2025 plan.

2) Elon Musk and the Project 2025 crew don't want Susan Crawford to win. They're scared.

Susan Crawford. That's the only name I need to know.

crawfordforwi.com/

The other person's name doesn't matter. Their platform doesn't matter.

So resist the very human urge to talk about that person and why they are bad.

Because name recognition affects judge elections more than you think. A lot of people are just going to vote for whichever name they've heard most. ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿฟโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Elon is dumping in millions to make sure that as many people have heard that other name as possible.

You can't fight that by also saying that other name.

Talk about this name instead.

Susan Crawford.

That's who they don't want to win.

Tried some of this fancy new "colour film" from Kodak, not sure there's any future in it, but it's a neat trick. They call this one Gold ;)

Looking into #ScienceAdvances as a journal to publish in..
Why is there a reference limit, and why is it so low (80 references)? In this day and age? For an online-only journal?

PS: remember that you can rate the submission & revision process of journals on #SciRev scirev.org/

in reply to El Duvelle

Why would anyone choose a for-profit open access journal over one run by a charity?
in reply to Albert Cardona

SciAdv is from AAAS, which is a non-profit - wouldn't that be better than a for-profit OA journal?
in reply to Frank Aylward

@foaylward You are right, I forgot Science Advances isn't from Nature or Elsevier. Gosh so many PLoS ONE copycats.
in reply to Frank Aylward

@albertcardona the APC is still quite high. I agree society OA journals are probably the best. For my micro work I try to aim for ASM

@Ivy Blackledge Whitfield 2025 Oops!
I understand the symbolism behind turning your image black. I have to admit I look for the account with an attached image in order to determine which one is in use. Black is different than a gray outline, but working fast I would have gone with the account with the picture of beautiful ivy greenery.

My apologies.

THIS is worth noting:

"Companies like CoreCivic and GEO Group receive government funding based on the number of people they detain, which is why they lobby for stricter immigration policies. Itโ€™s a lucrative business: CoreCivic made over $560m from Ice contracts in a single year. In 2024, GEO Group made more than $763m from Ice contracts.

"The more detainees, the more money they make. It stands to reason that these companies have no incentive to release people quickly. What I had experienced was finally starting to make sense."

in reply to Muse

Muse thanks for posting that. As a dual US/Canadian citizen never did I think we would get to this point.

for anyone who was in any of the #GNOME #matrix rooms a week or so ago... the flatpak version of element keeps its cache at ~/.var/app/im.riot.Riot/config/Element/Cache/Cache_Data/. you can use something like wipe to securely erase it.

EDIT: wipe and shred and co. won't work on an SSD. use something like blkdiscard instead.

@lorgonumputz @pauldoo alright so according to this: unix.stackexchange.com/a/59334โ€ฆ

shred, wipe, et al just won't work on SSDs because of how they function. the best you can do is a tool called blkdiscard which will politely ask the SSD to wipe the file. failing that, you have to wipe the entire SSD :face_think_thonking:
