You used to be able to hear a computer do work. Hard drive noise meant it's busy reading or writing files, fan noise meant the CPU load is high. My modern MacBook is just silent 99% of the time. I had to put gauges into the menu bar so I could see how busy it is.

I believe that so many people have been badly treated by our society that they are essentially feral. I love watching stories about feral animals who with sufficient love and care become whole and healthy creatures, enjoying life and interacting with others. I believe we could be doing the same thing for human beings. Give them (not sell them) a home, sufficient food, health care, and the help of compassionate people, then watch many of them flourish!
@Gargron Doctorow's whole deal for decades has been about interoperability. one major talking point was people being able to move their social media accounts wherever they want and/or using a service that allows accounts from different media companies to see and follow each other. he has specifically mentioned blue sky as not allowing that and that's why he isn't there. he made an account on 3/6. bluesky had changed nothing about how they operate. so what changed?

my advice to students is usually something like: the trend is short, your life is long. research what you are interested in, and make sure you can explain why you are doing it to other researchers (and to beancounters when necessary).
this is especially important for phd students: if you do a "trend project" for your phd, it will be both out of date and "cringe" by the time you hit the job market.
