A proposal looking to streamline per-user environment variables in Fedora was recently struck down.

in reply to It's FOSS

From reading the post, it's not made clear that shell-specific configuration files should be, and, in fact are, defined per shell. A user was always required to know this, even for sh and csh,.

Also, isn't there already a mechanism for setting user environment variables via systemd? I could be wrong, so could others execute "man environment.d" clear that up for me?

Finally, making setting environment variables more complicated than it already is seems bad. wiki.archlinux.org/title/Envir…

would you mind some more detail or pointers for the very marketing-y "even more secure" phrase?

Is it an "all hands on deck" situation?

I can't find details for any security-relevant even in the change logs - just the titles of the fixed issues aren't too descriptive and don't help judging the urgency.

I feel I need to say something about Artemis as a former NASA employee, Space scientist and engineer.

I hope more than anything that the astronauts get back safely. But let us not be fooled by what this is.

Is it spectacular, yes. Is it a feat of engineering, yes. Does it make any advance in science, no. Does it help mankind explore the universe, dubious at best.

Why exactly are we sending humans to the moon? With our technology we will never send humans much further than Mars. The only way humans can possibly go further is through a scientific breakthrough. Good luck with that when Trump is gutting science.

Human exploration needs money spent on long-term advances - not using the same technology to do what we did before, however, glamorous it is.

So why do this and why do it now? Political theatre, a win for a Trump led NASA if it succeeds.

So I hope all works well and all return safely. But let us be clear what this is and why it is being done.

This is my opinion, I do not represent anyone.

With what Windows is currently doing to its users I think it's sickening that the most viable alternative is a mere 5%. Where is the line for people?

But any improvement is at least a step in the right direction, even if it is positively glacial.

Use a distro with BTRFS and snapper making automatic snapshots so you can boot into a snapshot and rollback in case something goes wrong. Saved me so much trouble and time.

In a terminal shell, if you want to do a recursive operation on dotfiles only, don't do `.*` -- do `.[^.]*` for example, and test with a non-destructive command like `echo` beforehand. Reason: `.*` includes `..`

Democratic lotteries put power in the hands of the people

A democratic lottery fairly selects a group of representatives that matches the makeup of the population. It selects from all citizens who meet basic requirements and are willing and able to serve a limited term.

And because lotteries remove campaigning, they remove parties, politicians, super PACs, and so much of what is tearing America apart.

We can use democratic lotteries instead of elections to fill legislatures like Congress, and to transform how we choose executives like the President.

In recent decades, democratic lotteries have been used hundreds of times to call on citizens to develop policy on challenging issues. And they were central to government in Ancient Athens.

But few have had the chance to see this transformative paradigm for themselves. Until now…

The US documentary about democratic lotteries is set to be released soon.

Anger. Anger. Hate. Hate. Hate. Defeatism. Cynicism. More hate and anger. Pessimism. YELLING! Vicious put-downs. Talk of violence. Anger. Anger.

Does this sound healthy? What does this do to a person's sense of well-being? Does it help anyone? How demotivating is this? This isn't just MAGA. Plenty of other people wallow in this stuff.

Find even the smallest amount of caring and courage inside, then go outside and help build a better world!

I watch enough new to keep informed but don't pay attention to every little tidbit. I love my walks, being out in nature when I can watching things that make me laugh, spending time with family & friends, reading is my best escape, so many books, so many places to go to through when I read. 😍 My motto is to be kind, smile when you pass someone on the sidewalk, say Hi or good morning, acknowledge you saw them. Smile, it costs nothing. ☺️

We want to port Haiku to the RK356x platform 🙂

It's a long term plan but once Haiku port for RK356x is done and ready, we'll:

- Deprecating our ALARM-based Linux distro in favor of Haiku.

- All new PineTab2 will ship with Haiku instead of traditional ALARM-based Linux distro.

- Existing users will still remain on ALARM, however there'll not be any updates (user will receive "there is nothing to do" when they tried to update it)

yay a little build script for a little project 😀
in reply to katherine

it feels really helpful and comforting to know a little bit of shell scripting and python for these cases! i definitely don't know a lot, but it's just enough that i don't have to feel beholden to the npm/javascript/node environment and can do something a lot more lightweight
in reply to katherine

it's great, well done!

I remember seeing the artist Ben Grosser speak a few years ago, where he said something along the lines of 'I'm not a good programmer, but I am good enough to figure out a way to do what I want to do'. I think this is a great way to think about code.

I spent this evening painting gorse thorns with tempera paint made with the ashes of burned drawings of gorse bushes that were drawn in charcoal made from gorse branches.
