Biden holds off on climate emergency declaration

apnews.com/article/climate-bid…

We will, however, deliver 56 Billion Dollars to Intel, et al.

in reply to tom grzyb

I cannot even begin to explain how wrong this is, that we cannot address the existential threat of climate change, yet we are somehow able to divert all these resources to huge, profitable corporations, which themselves have vast resources.

Link to a comic about corporate capture of healthcare

I was looking for a catchy comic to illustrate the difficulty of finding initial funding to get preliminary data for biotech startups / how the search for funding limits the scope of who is thinking about, and able to work on, new biotech

Instead I found this comic which is quite excellent at articulating—via the example of TRIPS—how corporate interests enforce inequality.

Months later, U.S. Senate tries again for computer chip bill

in reply to tom grzyb

The whole point of going to national healthcare is to take the profit driven investors out of the equation.

They can invest is solar, but solar doesn't have the clout or money that coal does yet. So it's still more profitable for them to back coal.

in reply to tom grzyb

Thing is, the government is working for the Common Good. Right.

Bipartisan agreement on granting Intel tens of billions of dollars

apnews.com/article/technology-…

Pay no attention to the flames.

in reply to tom grzyb

I can’t support the corporate hand outs.

It's an informative irony that so many politicians argue against "budget busting" efforts at encouraging solar energy, wind power, and geothermal power in the fight against climate change and then somehow find 56 Billion for Intel et al.

in reply to tom grzyb

not to mention the huge increases in the military budget. It's almost like you cannot trust what they say...

Lake Mead forecast: Southwest should brace for more water cuts

cnn.com/2022/07/18/us/west-wat…

Just a matter of time now...

in reply to tom grzyb

Well, Manchin just stripped all the potentially huge supports for environment from the now-eviscerated budget bill. Gone, EV & solar tax relief for people who care. 🙁

There has been little-to-no effort to use "carrots" to bribe his vote. For instance, is he strongly in support of this Intel give-away? Hold that in front of him...

Extreme heat sears UK, France and Spain

cnn.com/2022/07/18/weather/eur…

More than 1,100 people are thought to have already died in the ongoing heatwave in southern Europe.

in reply to tom grzyb

@tom grzyb We have enough to do in Europe, things aren't moving nearly as quickly as they should. Only yesterday did the EU "urge" member states to start conserving natural gas. And that's only because of the war in Ukraine, not even for climate purposes.

If it were up to me, we would have invested billions and billions in solar and wind, and already gotten the production and use of hydrogen up and running. But most governments are much better at navel-gazing than actually doing stuff.

But yes, Washington needs to get its act together too...

in reply to tom grzyb

Washington is worse than a waste - the US is the world's second biggest CO2 polluter. For any progress to be made, much of it has to be made in the US.

Fascism Denial in U.S. Mass Media

counterpunch.org/2022/07/15/hi…

in reply to tom grzyb

reporters preferred extremely generic and uncontroversial classifications, referring overwhelmingly to Crimo as a “shooter” and to his “shooting.” These terms were used in 14 of the 15 Times articles, in all 10 MSNBC programs, in 66 of 67 CNN programs, and all 12 Fox News programs. Reporters are well-known for practicing this sort of “episodic” bias, focusing on specific events (a shooting), rather than on thematic framing of news stories – for example focusing on the problem of rising extremism, fascism, white supremacy, or authoritarianism. Still, the reluctance to address larger themes in terms of threats to the U.S. republic means that the news media have been part of the problem

Russia's Medvedev: Attack on Crimea will ignite 'Judgement Day' response

reuters.com/world/europe/medve…

So, Russia can attack Ukraine but Ukraine cannot counter-attack? This is not logic, it is merely a threat.

in reply to tom grzyb

We can expect Russia to be making many threats in the coming days, as they lose...
in reply to tom grzyb

Meh. Blah, blah, blah. Putin's been threating Armageddon since day one. Yet a little over 90% of his regular army troops are now either dead or wounded and replacements being conscripted farm boys from Eastern Russian and Siberia. If he's not careful he'll be forced to start drafting the babushkas before long. Then who'll make his bortsch?

Hi 🌟 !
I'm Coliandre, a belgian artist and illustrator living in France.
I paint Fantasy and Faery stuff.

I've worked on many fields: comics books (Alice in wonderland, Soufflevent), children books, boardgames (like Mysterium, Dixit, Abyss), novel covers.

I also have my little worlds, such as "The Little Witches" or the "Dracofungus".

Once upon a time, in the Styrian Alps, I hiked up a mountain in the early morning darkness to photograph the sunrise. That was almost three years ago now, October 2019.

I've posted a few edits of this before, but this is the original that I haven't shown like this before. Unfortunately I don't have the RAW files anymore, so I can't edit it again by today's standards and technical possibilities.

recent indie game video boosts

I've been playing some truly awesome small indie games in the last few months. I archive my streams over at irrsinn.video/video-channels/m…, and I work to get closed captioning on them within a week of uploading.

If you're looking for some game recs, I'd suggest checking them out. Just about all of them take between 10 min and 3 hours, so these are quite small games by conventional standards. You can subscribe to a Peertube channel w/ a Mastodon account, too.

Beat Saber

I acquired a Quest 2 back in September, and took to Beat Saber like a fish to water. Since early Sept, I've played ~130 hours mostly through Steam.

The timing for starting to play was great: I was in the final stretches of in-office physical therapy for my shoulders, and BS is a solid way to improve my shoulders' stamina and assess tightness. I could only play 15-20 minutes on easier difficulties when I started. Now I can play 60-90 min of Expert+ on an average (pain level) day.

in reply to Melissa Avery-Weir

It's been forever since I posted a #BeatSaber map rec, and today I have two! The first is a really fun, dancey map to QUIX's "Survive", mapped by Joetastic:

beatsaver.com/maps/bf71

The mix of the single arm beats with the fast twirly/circular pattern (which has a slightly unusual doubling of blocks in it that tripped me up on my first attempts) makes the mapping feel really dynamic. Sometimes that kind of thing feels like a mapper reaching for variety and instead finding chaos, but it works great here.

I didn't record my session today, but this person does a nice job at it: youtu.be/cAp1vmj1PSw?si=6vTf8w…

in reply to Melissa Avery-Weir

My second #BeatSaber rec is also a Joetastic map (these must have just been lying around in wait from that time I downloaded all 1000 of their maps), and it's a map of GUNSHIP's "Tech Noir":

beatsaver.com/maps/48a7

Banger synthwave song and a map that is intricate and low-key without being one of those maps that are super slow and pile all the blocks one right behind the other.

A quick search didn't reveal a video I thought was great to showcase this map, so maybe I'll record one tomorrow while I'm baking. 😁
