Day 6: I believe they have accepted me as one of their own, though I'm worried about Larry, who keeps asking: "Is it just me, or do I smell wet dog?"

Very happy to see others have already pointed out that it's a photoshop.

"Those obsessed with productivity and injustice often disparage doing nothing, though by doing nothing we usually mean a lot of subtle actions and observations and cultivation of relationships that are doing many kinds of something. It's a doing something whose value and results are not so easily quantified or commodified, and you could even argue that any or every evasion of quantifiability and commodifiability is a victory against assembly lines, authorities, and over-simplifications."

Anti-Immigrant Extremists Want to Use this 226-Year-Old Law to Implement a Mass Deportation Program

The Alien Enemies Act of 1798 was used to justify World War II-era internment of noncitizens, and now Donald Trump is threatening to invoke the law to target immigrant communities

“I, a writer, asked the plagiarism machine to copy guides for me.”

This is how we ruin the internet. People will stop writing guides.

🤦‍♀️the only way chatgpt could possibly create an accurate guide is to plagiarize existing guides

I moved the #Friendica Wiki to another server. I need some people to test it and see if all works. I will then solve the problems pointed out.

The initial setup was not done by me. It was still on a server with php 7.4 because it did not work with 8.x due to some plugins. I removed those plugins, apparently not maintained since 2014.

I also saw that it loads some js from some CDN, I don't like that either, so tips welcome on that. Maybe there is a plugin that stores such stuff locally?

Also can you suggest a free service to analyze your webpage, show problem, broken links and such?

I saw that the Avatar (only a systemwide standard avatar for all users) is not displayed in my Firefox, but looks fine on Chromium. May be a DNS issue, so local issue only, seems tailscale some how messes up my DNS resolution. But please have a look for any embedded stuff that does not load!

Send me screenshots if you like and/or links to the problem page.

I went through their quiz. Rather than a score, I got smacked with a "Create an account!" page. Instant no. I do NOT reward bait and switch.
in reply to Muse

@Jay Bryant Well, that's disappointing. These are fairly young people running this. I have a feeling they have brought some ideas from a marketing class. Nevertheless, we need lists like this.

Google are breaking my mittens - Sonofa. Twelve years ago I knitted a pair of “self-replicating mittens” (web-goddess.org/archive/14046) with a QR code that pointed you to the pattern for the mittens, and I entered them in the Sydney Royal Easter Show. I was pretty proud of my cleverness. In the blog post (web-goddess.org/archive/11192) where I talked about making the mittens, I said:

I wanted my code to be as simple as possible, so I needed to use a URL shortener to mask my intended address. I settled on using Google‘s, reasoning that it was likely to be around the longest. (Though who knows these days, right?)

You can guess what’s happened, right? Google URL Shortener links will no longer be available (developers.googleblog.com/en/g…) as of August this year.

Bastards are breaking my mittens. Perhaps I’ll have to add some embroidery. web-goddess.org/archive/56383

can't find the post but there was a tweet that read along the lines of "there's a bunch of metrics called 'good country prosper index' or some shit and they all look like this" and it was an MS paint drawing of a map with all the anglosphere countries in green, africa in red, and china/russia in yellow

it appears there is a bug in my bash script that replaces all instances of "toot" with "shit" in the mastodon UI. however the outcome of this bug is so funny that i will not be fixing it

Saddling small sites with the same duties as huge platforms means many will shut down in a hammer blow to net plurality.

We'll be left with the Sophie’s choice of monopoly services; the incubators of online harms.

I’m an amateur lisper, mostly #Guile and #EmacsLisp, but if someone wants to team up for this #GameJam, I’d be interested!

I also do some basic art, game design, sound, and music. I wouldn’t want to be the sole programmer for this jam but could definitely contribute there and would love to learn more #Lisp.

@saitama I’m going to get in the habit of streaming while I work on my game jams at @wesley You can follow that account to get livestream notifications.

I always do my best to answer questions and explain things, but with game jams it tends to be more “watch me go!”

That would be 'the' Denmark that Trump is threatening to seize Greenland from. You couldn't make it up. It is beyond parody.

Reitred Federal Judge: "What has happened with Elon Musk, well, I have called it a coup. If it succeeds, it will have been a coup. In other words, if the definition of a “coup” is a small group of people who are not elected — and there was Musk — who are taking over the power of the government, yes, I would call it a coup. I mean, he — there are challenges around the country to his authority, to Musk’s authority — Musk, who is not confirmed by Congress, who was selected by means that no one exactly knows, who was given powers that no one knows about, who is getting access to information that only government officials who have been appropriately selected can get. And if he’s successful in that — there are challenges to that. If he is successful, yes, I would call that a coup."

i've been noticing more websites not including GST in listed prices, which, to my understanding, is illegal unless you're advertising exclusively to other businesses:

Businesses must display the total price of a product or service as a single figure. This price must be the minimum total cost – the lowest amount a customer could pay, including any taxes, duties and unavoidable or pre-selected extra fees.

here are two websites i've seen doing this in the past week alone - red hat and patreon. patreon in particular is in no way aimed at business-to-business transactions.

#australia

in reply to Lynnesbian

aliexpress does this too, I've bought some exxy stuff from them and always get surprised when an extra $50 of gst magically turns up in my cart at checkout

@tempo lmao the massive $3.09 and then the tiny "tax excluded" in light grey font under the bright yellow banner

that sucks so much
