Switch to a distribution that is not #Ubuntu and that does not use either #Gnome or #KDE (unless the Gnome devs ever decide to give us an actual working screen SAVER, and I do NOT mean a screen LOCKER or a screen BLANKER!!! They need to realize that if you send no signal at all to some TV sets the screen does NOT go blank, but instead displays a big warning that the signal has been lost!). Once the #Cosmic desktop is out of alpha/beta I want to give #PopOS a try, but I have about had it with Ubuntu. Unfortunately I am not conversant enough with Linux to be a frequent "distro hopper" - too afraid I would lose data and software (Linux needs something like the MacOS "Migration Assistant").

a bit niche, but is there a "gsconnect, but in reverse" if I'm running #GNOME (actually, #phosh) on my phone as well? :phosh:

I was sad to find a surprising lack of visual scripting apps for Linux. Apple's Shortcuts app is very powerful and can be incredibly useful. It's not like we don't have the technical ability to make something similar.

So I started working on one myself :blobfoxfloofcofe:

To illustrate just how utterly boneheaded #GNOME UI design has become, I present you with Geary.

  1. This is the minimum size of the window. If I make it any narrower, the email portion will disappear and the email list will expand to cover the entire area.
  2. But! You say, you can use the column dividers, to resize the individual columns, right? Nope, the GNOME/Geary people think you should not be able to resize the columns manually like you could before. No explanation, just fuck you.
  3. So. Much. Whitespace. The amount of whitespace wasted in Geary is absolutely batshit insane. This window could present the same amount of information while taking up half the screenspace and still be 100% clear and usable.
  4. Related to 3, no options to change density or other options to reduce this whitespace hellscape.

This one fucking email client takes up nearly my entire 2x 4K display. I can't believe we let these people define the 'default' Linux desktop and let them get away with it.

As a long-time XFCE-user I can fully subscribe to the conclusion of this article: ยปnon-GNOME GTK desktop environments need to work together to formulate an answer to the onslaught of libadwaita and the GNOME-ification of GTK. [โ€ฆ] If they donโ€™t, there wonโ€™t be an XFCE in a few years. Whatโ€™s the point in developing XFCE if youโ€™re at the mercy of whatever choices GNOME makes?ยซ https://www.osnews.com/story/139512/linux-mint-non-gnome-gtk-desktop-environments-need-to-work-together-in-the-face-of-libadwaita/

A sorting function in the new #GNOME Text Editor (a feature that was available in gedit and which I need from time to time) ๐Ÿ˜•

ignoring state files, it's usually a mess for WM without DE.

Many Linux/WM developers don't follow convention over configuration...

I recently tried #hyprland, which is currently the only WM/DE in stable #NixOS with wayland fractional scaling support.

And, I spent so much time to get just some bar/panel working, that was ugly and very limited in functionality compared to #GNOME shell (I used before.- very nice) or KDE, or XFCE.

I ended up switching to #KDE and NixOS unstable.

I do most of my #screenshots with the default tool from @gnome. Sometimes, however, when I like to highlight elements, I prefer to use #Shutter. ๐Ÿ”— https://shutter-project.org

Today, I accidentally came across this older article from @itsfoss and learned, you can actually also use @GIMP for taking screenshots. (file > create > screenshot)

It''s pretty cool if editing is necessary since it opens the image in #Gimp.

Watched the last episode of TechOverTea by @BrodieOnLinux , with Georges Stavracas, a great lead dev in Gnome, Wayland, you name it. The amount of shiite and harassment he, and many other FOSS people have to suffer is simply staggering. And no, it's not 'them', it is from the 'free and opensource community'. It's by us. Think about that and let it sink in. We have to do better for them and act, no coffee talk. As a true community.

Ever since doing the initial completion support in #phosh 's osk-stub I wanted to add a generic "unix pipe" like completer. phosh-osk-stub would feed the program preedit on stdin and read the completions from the program's stdout.

That is there now and with that and some more changes I can use @zachdecook 's #swipeGuess to do swipe like typing. To be clear: all the hard work is done by swipeGuess, phosh-osk-stub just piggy backs on it:
