Good suggestion!

I contacted OPB on April 11 (before they left #twitter) and got a nice reply, part of which I shared here. More contacts will probably help!

So, Twitter <img class=" title=":twitter:"/> decided to pull a DeviantArt move and change its Terms Of Services to include anything you post there on their AI dataset, to re-publish your art and benefit from it without your consent or compensation.

I will only leave my contact information there, nothing else.

There it is: Germany's second big public broadcaster is teasing, that it will start posting on #Mastodon tomorrow as @ZDF That account has 3200 follower, on #Twitter its 1,4 million.

I'm sure it will start to grow quickly and get a headstart on the other big public broadcaster #ARD, which has labeled its first account a test (@NDR).

Of course it would also be a headstart on the big public broadcasters, that are arguing with #Twitter.

#NPR #PBS #TwitterTakeover #ElonMusk #SocialMedia #BBC

While #NPR and #PBS have quit #Twitter (without mentioning #Mastodon however), Germany's biggest public broadcaster #ARD and #ZDF are not only already testing their own instances for quite a while (https://dev.ard.social/public/local & https://zdf.social/public/local): The first proper account is now live and posts news articles from northern Germany – @NDR

Let's see, if NPR and PBS find their way here. Oh and where is the #BBC?

#Twitter isn’t a company anymore — it’s been merged into a new entity called X Corp. https://slate.com/technology/2023/04/twitter-inc-x-corp-elon-musk-x-nevada.html

#Twitter copies #mastodon with their emoji in names 😂

Saw this emoji on twitter account and copied it then boom, I'm twitter now

This is good. News organizations on #Twitter are, at this point, doing it more for Twitter's benefit than their own, and they should act like it

NPR says it won’t tweet from @NPR until Twitter removes false “state-affiliated” label

Now is the time for our friendly local NPR stations to move over to Mastodon. We #Newstodon newsrooms will welcome you with open arms 🤗

Verification on #Twitter was sought after because it conveyed status. Now a blue check is meaningless or even suggests that those paying for it have fallen for a scam.

The Verge explains:

“The basic truth of cool, as anyone can tell you, is that trying to be cool is not cool, and paying to be cool is for suckers.”

Content warning: Mention of Elon Musk/Paypaltine and Twitter

In case you missed it, here's last week's comic illustrating the history of #Twitter in four panels:

Twitter’s ad revenue is down 89% and not many users are signing up to its paid subscription. In April, it’s removing “legacy” blue checks and further prioritizing paid accounts.

For Disconnect, I explain that Elon Musk needs this to push more users to subscribe to Twitter Blue so he can pay his $1.5 billion in annual interest payments. But it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen.

Content warning: The best article on Twitter’s impending demise that I’ve read

Time for the weekly #Linux and #OpenSource news video!

In this one, we have @frameworkcomputer announcing a 16 inch laptop, with replaceable GPU expansion modules, we have @nextcloud releasing Hub 4, a new version with integrated AI tools, and a lot of updates to the core apps, and we have #Twitter planning to open source their algorithm at the end of the month.

Plus, screen sharing on Wayland should now work for every single app, and more!

https://youtu.be/6J7qi2nchVs

Every large brand audience development lead is currently working on a spreadsheet telling them the value of the traffic generated by #Twitter and finding it’s less than $1000 a month, while every brand legal team is creating a template letter to send to Twitter demanding takedown of accounts impersonating their trade marks. Once more, #Musk doesn’t have a clue.

#Twitter devalues its own product!

"the only value of a twitter blue checkmark now is that people might mistake you for someone who is actually notable. if you get rid of every other checkmark, then the twitter blue checkmark literally means nothing."

And this is about to happen on April 1st. You can't make this up!

It seems appropriate that blue checks on #Twitter will become even more meaningless on April Fools Day.

This IEEE piece on the rise of #Mastodon & expanding #Fediverse with thoughtful observations from @tchambers is worth a read.

I’m delighted to see the Rachel Carson post included & I hope it inspires more folks to learn about her legacy.

Yep, if you send a press query to #Twitter, you’ll only receive a 💩emoji as a reply.

I rarely post about Musk & #Twitter, but I am currently writing a dissertation related to the spread of misinformation.

This is not true. ⬇️

Recently I found that quite a few of my #Twitter and #Mastodon followers are working in high-performance #computing (HPC). At first I was surprised because I’m not a #HPC person, even if I love high performance computers. Then I realized that there are quite few overlaps, and one of my best friends is also deeply involved in HPC. My work, #logging, is also a fundamental part of HPC environments.

yes, of course... but I would not expect too much sympathy to this cause from #ElonMusk and #Twitter... 🙄

Content warning: Long thread/5

who knew March 20th would be another day so many of us just give up on that tiresome place.
It's depressing to go on their right now, by March we will have moved on.
#Twitter

text message based #2FA is not considered safe for a longer time, so replacing it with another 2FA method is highly recommended anyway, but they way they communicate is just hilarious. I don’t care about subscription levels at Netflix, I just want movies, and subscription levels are way more impactful there than on #Twitter. Who gives a damn what blue users, while people just want to communicate freely.. sounds like nonsense to me.

Hi #science #research #mastodon community! A few days ago, a post of mine recieved a lot of attention. Thanks for the engagement and the very interesting suggestions! https://neuromatch.social/@LeonDLotter/109632615134117119

On #Twitter, I loved the common practice of writing threads explaining new #preprints and #papers in an understandable way.
I uttered my concern that through the chronological timeline here people might miss interesting science. A solution would be to agree on names for hashtags and/or a.gup.pe groups to ease tracking these "paper threads".

Following tags were named more then once: #newPaper #paperThread #preprint #researchPaper #mastoPrint #tootPrint.
Also, there was #tootorial, but that might be a slightly different category?

I heard people like participation - so let's do a poll! What's your favourite tag for threads explaining research articles? 📊 Multiple choices possible!

#twitterMigration #scienceTwitter #scientist @academicchatter @neuroscience @cognition @psychology @phdstudents

  • #newPaper (26%, 67 votes)
  • #paperThread (37%, 93 votes)
  • #preprint (27%, 68 votes)
  • #researchPaper (34%, 85 votes)
  • #tootPrint (9%, 23 votes)
250 voters. Poll end: 1 year ago

The future of #Mastodon is up to us.

We choose the content & what to highlight & celebrate. On #Twitter & other platforms, we became used to posting & expecting the most infuriating/outrageous/triggering news. It became sport & spectacle & promoted narcissism.

We have an opportunity to actively share in other ways here. Curate curiosity. Build on each other’s ideas.

@Gargron & team have given us a chance to do things differently. So far, I’m optimistic.

“I want better for #Twitter than the awful existence that Musk has charted. But mostly, I want better for us.

Figuring out places to be, ways to keep connections alive, find new methods of sharing experiences with others has been my driving factor…My hope is that we won't simply replace one monolithic platform with another….That we'll try new things, build new things, find new ways to connect that don't simply replicate the patterns of the past but instead move toward…”

#Twitter can actually close now, because this is the greatest post anyone ever made there.

Big thanks to #ElonMusk honestly. Although he misleadingly frames it as "your" fault, what he is explaining here is that #Twitter's algorithm is designed to pour oil on every fire it sees.

Some of us have been pointing out how dangerous that is for years now.

Agree. And a large part of this problem is the general dumpster fire that is social media. 'They were so pre-occupied with whether they could, they never stopped to think whether they should!'

Putting all humans in touch with each other without meaningful oversight or guardrails is observably short-sighted. I believe this has contributed to millions of deaths + serious atrocities, up to & including genocide. Now with #musk , leaving #twitter is a no brainer.

I have 5,000 followers on #facebook; 3,000 on #twitter & over 1,000 on #Hive ….

But, I’m spending more & more time here (with only 20 followers, so far).
