No Players Online returns after an 'unfounded DMCA claim' halted sales for nearly three weeks gamingonlinux.com/2025/12/no-p…

The trailer for the game give me vibes for the "game" (really what is now called a visual novel) Portal that I played in the late 80s / early 90s. Returning from a solo space mission, you find the city is abandoned, and you need to explore to discover what happened to everyone. It was eventually released as a novel, which is good because my disk was corrupted and I could not read the ending in the game.

Fedora Linux 44 will get improved NTSYNC enabling for Proton / Wine gamingonlinux.com/2025/12/fedo…

#Fedora #Linux #NTSYNC #Wine #Proton

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

"What is NTSYNC? Arriving with Linux kernel 6.14 the aim of it was mainly to help accuracy and performance for NT synchronization"

I've read the article and clicked through to other articles, ending up at the kernel mailing list for the addition, but other than knowing it's a performance enhancement that may or may not affect games running via Proton, I didn't come across anything telling me what NT Synchronisation is.

Is that NT as in Windows NT or something entirely different?

Surprise finding by Conference of Swiss Data Protection Officers:
" identified five critical problems with international cloud providers:

Most SaaS solutions lack true end-to-end encryption.
Global companies offer insufficient transparency for compliance verification.
Cloud services create significant loss of control over data.
Legal uncertainty exists for data under confidentiality obligations.
The US CLOUD Act allows data access regardless of storage location"

Also keep in mind that ECC doesn't make the hardware 100% secure, I also had a kernel panic once in a server using ECC and was a huge problem.

I never got to know the exact problem, but I am almost completely sure it wasn't the RAM, it was something with my hard drive, but I don't know if it was OS's fault or drive's.

in reply to It's FOSS

I think Torvalds is not a Windows hater, he just made his own OS so why would he use it tho...

in reply to Katherine Bond

possibly either, as is sung in the chorus here:

Knickers of Corduroy

I'm a decent married woman, my name is Mrs. Magee,
I'm a native of this County Down convenient to Donaghadee,
I had a faithful husband, oh whom I liked so fine,
But now he's gone and left me and I'm nearly out of my mind.

Chorus:
He wears a pair of laceless shoes, knickers of corduroy,
He's a swallowtail coat and waistcoat, he's only got one eye,
His hair and whiskers both are black, he wears a castor hat,
And can anyone kindly tell me, have you seen my darling Pat?

On the morning that we parted, the tears rolled in his eye,
Saying "Biddy dear, I'm going away my fortune for to try.
They say the harvest is pretty good in Scotland this year,
So Biddy dear, I'll send you the price of a pint, don't you be feared."

Chorus

"If I can find a postbox, as soon as I arrive,
You may expect a letter as sure as I'm alive."
But my Pat's away three months today and he's left me in a stew,
Since I lost my darling husband, oh what am I to do?

Chorus

in reply to Katherine Bond

Hmm... from images I can find, it looks like it might have been the ancestor of both. Just a coat that sweeps down to be longer at the back.

I sat for a long while with my complicated feelings about "vibe coding". It is _genuinely_ empowering for many — opening a door to creating with code that otherwise would never exist. Also? It enables a dangerous dependency that could be a path to serfdom for coders. anildash.com/2025/12/02/vibe-c…
in reply to Anil Dash

Software engineering is often compared to actual engineering. Would it be good if everyone could design buildings, bridges, and elevators without any kind of education? Most software applications involve user data in some way, and some go as far as touching upon actual human safety. The argument about empowerment does not hold, especially considering how easy it is to be autodidact in software engineering in the first place.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron I think that's a fair argument for the segment of coding that is software engineering. I would argue a *lot* of coding isn't really... software engineering? Like, the front-end code on my blog certainly doesn't count as that for me. If I get an LLM to help me, and it has an error, there's no security or privacy implications, nor any real danger except maybe a rendering error. So it seems like a fair domain to just muddle through. There are a lot of things in that space these days.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron there is a lot of discussion in the US about a Professional Engineering license for Software. It goes in and out of favor, but I think that it should be required for at least life-critical software.

There is some gatekeeping there, but I think when human lives are at risk it is justified.

Earlier I mentioned that fun and joy are actually very important. Indeed, the success of *all* social networks, and indeed, almost every kind of tech, has been rooted in people having joyful, often shared, experiences together.

Joy is part of resistance. And joy is part of our tech.
