The man loves destruction. If there's a forest, with large trees, they must be cut down. That's the law. The law of destruction.

Happy birthday to 🇨🇦Canadian medical researcher & #biochemist Maud Menten (1879-1960). Not only was she an author of Michaelis-Menten equation for #enzyme kinetics, she invented the azo-dye coupling for alkaline phosphatase, 1st example of enzyme #histochemistry, still used in imaging of tissues today & she also performed the first #electrophoretic separation of blood haemoglobin in 1944!

Josh Turner and Dodie's cover of Turn to Stone is charming. The overall video is interesting because they are expressing concerns and disappointments over where we have gone with the Internet. Their poke into the human dimension has moments of real insight.

Got book! Looking forward to reading it 😀 @rek

why can't i work making software for 20 year old machines?!!! 😞
in reply to Devine Lu Linvega

@neauoire working is easy, making money doing so not much 🥲 (speaking as someone with a side project of making tools for game development for the Sega Saturn)
in reply to João

making a living off gamedev tools for 40 years old hardware is tricky, but making games targeting 2000 era machines, it's quite realistic : )

Can I get a link to your Saturn side-gig? I'd love to see

@neauoire Right now it's mostly dev tools, I've been reverse-engineering the audio DSP to enable people to use it and add sequenced music (midi-like) to their games. Homebrew mostly doesn't use those features because the tools for it were only supported on PowerPC Macs and are severely underdocumented.

I have these two ongoing projects:
- github.com/jfsantos/scspdspsim: DSP simulator/assembler for the SCSP DSP on the Sega Saturn
- github.com/jfsantos/mid2seq: converts midi to seq files to be (potentially) rendered by the Sega Saturn audio driver

the more device you support, the more customers 😀

My latest piece in America Magazine lays bare the extent to which US government policy seems to be going in outright opposition to decades of Catholic teaching—particularly on climate, war, and civil discourse. Catholics, we cannot participate in this: americamagazine.org/short-take…

So, my #microbiology homies, specially those doing #fungi research, are there any blogs, newsletters or mastodon accounts I should be following?

I am now working at a biotech finding useful compounds produced in fungi and want to learn more and keep up to date with what's happening. In the field. #bioinformatics focused but the bio bit is quite important.

Cheers!

My first long run after about 4 weeks of rehab due to achilies injury. It all went uneventful and I'm happy with the results despite much lower pace and elevated HR.

There's no official #GoogleDrive app for #Linux ... But do you even need one?

There are excellent, powerful Linux alternatives for Drive that get you better #dataprivacy and transparency. Nextcloud is one of them 💙

Read the article on How-To Geek: 👇

in reply to Nextcloud 📱☁️💻

Don't get me wrong, I'd always prefer nextcloud over Google Drive, but in case you do need it, at least Gnome, KDE, and Mint offer full integration via online accounts (also including mail, contacts, and calendar if desired)

Stillness and radical presence: Mercurial Cycles mix and an album revisited, from Hüma Utku.

It's tough to find music that can be comforting without being escapist, that fits the moment. Hüma Utku's mix and album for me fit that perfectly. Essential.

damn, that's excellent, thanks for the recomendation. The song at 15:30 is especially nice

An editor from a Springer Nature journal, a company that posted $2.1 billion in revenue in 2022 [1], from an industry with double-digit percent profits (~30% [2]), kindly asked me, an academic in the UK where salaries continue to plummet [3], whether I would be pleased to review a paper for them, for free ... so I kindly asked whether they would consider paying me. It is only logical.

what's your go-to "fidget" or ~1-minute distraction when some task is running (like, you're waiting for something to compile)?
in reply to Fionnáin

@ephemeral whoa, the harmonica sounds so fun! 😀

i don't really have anything good, but trying to think of something (would need to be pretty quiet though)

in reply to katherine

harmonica is the bee's knees. I always have a couple of instruments dotted around my studio or home office, but yeah sound is not ok everywhere.

Blu-tak or plasticene are great for just fiddling with. I also do string figures: isfa.org/sfotm/sfotm_2013.htm

If you can't tell from this, my energy is a bit manic and fidgets are my punctuation.

Update on the Colorado Age Attestation bill: Everyone that participated in the meeting last week submitted proposed changes to the bill. They included good ideas to improve consumer protection and privacy and exempt open source software.

Sen. Ball responded this morning that they'll now draft potential amendments.

I think we're making good progress. I'm off for a ski weekend with the kids. Have a great weekend everyone!
