half of the world is dry and burning, while the other half floods, and it gets worse each year. Where will we live ?#climatechange

Science Debate - the ngo I cofounded with an incredible team - lives on as Science on the Ballot!

Itโ€™s now part of the National Science Policy Network - a network of advocates for science, built by & for young scientists. They will carry the mission forward, pressing U.S. candidates to address #science #policy issues like #ClimateChange, #energy & public health before the 2024 election.

Iโ€™m so excited to watch them shine!

A striking visualisation of #climatechange: the date of Kyoto cherry blossoms' reaching full bloom, plotted over the past 1000 years.

Thanks to the cultural significance of cherry blossoms in Japan, we have data on the specific day of the year when a very particular species of cherry blossom (P. jamasakura) reached "full-flowering" (ๆบ€้–‹) in a specific area on the outskirts of Kyoto (Arashiyama), all the way back to 800 AD.

The trend of the past 50 years is hard to missโ€ฆ

Meat industry blocked the IPCCโ€™s attempt to recommend a plant-based diet

โ€œA leak of a draft of the Intergovernmental Panel on #ClimateChange (#IPCC) report..has been particularly enlightening when it comes to just how much how delegations negotiate, watered down & delete scientistsโ€™ findings.โ€

Given all the discussion (and dismay) about the newly released #IPCC report, this article on the importance of #turbulence and internal waves for the transport of heat and carbon in the world's oceans. Mentions of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) and size of internal waves (yes they can 500m tall) but most importantly about small-scale turbulent mixing (which is poorly documented) having a large-scale effect on climate. #ClimateChange #Oceanography

You may have heard that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change - the #IPCC - released a new #climate report.

Hereโ€™s the most important take home:

There are *still* so many feasible & effective opportunities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions & adapt to #climatechange available right now.

Climate solutions will improve #food, energy & water security, benefit global health, promote equity, conserve biodiversity & boost the economy.

We're super excited for the #ClimateOfChange #Mastodon PREMIERE, Tues Feb 28 at 7pm, featuring #yyc author of #ThePatch, #ClimateOptimist and more #ChrisTurner!

Fave this post or better yet BOOST it and we'll update it during show time so YOU GET THE NOTIFICATION.

We'll also be keeping an eye on comments/questions of this post to ask Turner on the show! See you tomorrow night!

Food waste is responsible for at least *6%* of global greenhouse gas emissions.

We can change that. Right now.

"The residents of the Swiss canton of Valais are used to seeing their mountainsides covered with snow in winter and edelweiss flowers in summer. But as global heating intensifies, they are increasingly finding an invasive species colonising the slopes: cacti."

Physicist John Tyndall is often credited w discovering the greenhouse effect, which he wrote about in 1859.

But female scientist Eunice Foote published a paper - 3yrs earlier - demonstrating how atmospheric water vapor & CO2 affected solar heating. She theorized that heat trapping gases in Earthโ€™s atmosphere warm its #climate.

Tyndall was widely read. And Foote, being a woman, wasn't even permitted to present her own work.

Climate change, according to my classes, instigates extreme weather swings, such as freezing winters and scalding summers.

Climate change is real, and "winter is still cold" is NOT AN EXCUSE FOR *YOUR* GODDAMN IGNORANCE

CLIMATE. CHANGE. IS. REAL.

GET THAT IN PEOPLES' HEADS!

The Arctic blast in the northeastern U.S.& Canada reminded me of this #ClimateChange comic from nearly a decade ago by @rosemarymosco of Bird and Moon Comics. https://rosemarymosco.com/ #weather

Now if only we can get the rodent to tell them #ClimateChange is real and a dire consequence, so that they will accept that and do something about it.

@Sheril

Bring on Climate Change Chuck!

If prophets for planetary change must come in the form of rodents, then that is what me must do.

For #science โ€™s and #climatechange โ€˜s sake, would all #US #scientists please dress up as a #hedgehog and get their message out โ˜บ๏ธ?

Well, it's Groundhog Day, again.*

โ€œOnly in America do we accept weather predictions from a rodent but deny #ClimateChange evidence from scientists.โ€

The wide range of responses to this post are quite something. Lots of different expectations about whatโ€™s to come on Earth.

Iโ€™ve been working on science & policy related to climate challenges in & out of academia for decades. For what itโ€™s worth, Iโ€™m firmly on team hope. https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/observations/no-climate-change-will-not-end-the-world-in-12-years/

We can address #climatechange. Many individuals, organizations & nations already are. Thereโ€™s still time. Not much.

Quite the early eulogy for humanity. Best to tread the tight rope of #GlobalWarming reporting:

โ€œwant to scare people enough to take the problem seriously but not so much as to make them feel hopeless [while] they want to reassure people that a climate-secure future is possible but only enough to avoid complacency.โ€
