🤣 Holy shit, Secret Base writing is so good. Them gently remarking on Steve Jeltz getting clowned on his own baseball card made me pause to laugh for a long minute. youtu.be/VfFn4NqQr_U

Also: “Bob Walk? More like Bob Walk.”

And: "I wonder whether [Jim Rooker, who wagered a walk from the Philly stadium to Pittsburgh if Pittsburgh lost] remembered that Pittsburgh and Philidelphia are separated by the Allegheny Mountains."

Their work is so good.

Hi all,
Got the invite by @kathrynyu
Excited to be here. My name is Glen Henry (he/him).

I'm a software project manager by trade and face & fingers behind Spritewrench Studios. A solo-ish micro-studio based in Kingston, Jamaica.
I (usually) focus on smaller self-contained titles with an emphasis on narrative elements.

Current:
Working on two projects at the moment:
+ "On the Peril of Parrots", a narrative puzzle game where you play as an AI trying to prove it's intelligence.
store.steampowered.com/app/213…
+ "Duppy Detective Tashia", a detective game based on Caribbean Folklore.
store.steampowered.com/app/195…

About Me:
I'm a self taught artist and have spent most of my life trying to find a way to sustainably combine my passion for art with technology.
Naturally, games felt like the best fit. I've gone the indie route as there isn't an established industry in my country, and I try to help out the local game dev scene through efforts with the JGDS (Jamaica Game Developer Society).

"Featured hashtag editor replaces camel case by lower case"
github.com/mastodon/mastodon/i…

Currently, when adding a featured hashtag to your profile, if you use camelcase (e.g. MastodonCats) it gets lowercased (e.g. mastodoncats), which isn't great for #accessibility / #a11y.

If you're into it, click through to the Github issue to add your 👍 or comment of support. And if you don't have a Github account but still want to support, please boost. 🚀

Beat Saber

Had a delightful #BeatSaber session this evening, and landed on a wonderfully difficult and clever map: tofubeats' "CANDYYYLAND (Pa’s Lam System Remix)", mapped by Saut: bsaber.com/songs/294c/

Here's a very skilled person playing on Expert, the hardest difficulty I beat: youtu.be/3XjdriFOgLk (unrelated: they have wildly low-contrast block arrows! 🤯) The segment starting at 2:48 in that video is so smoothly mapped that I didn't even get tangled up in left-handed mode.

#VideoGames

Beat Saber

Ooh yes this is EXACTLY what I was after, thank you! ❤

The pattern I was trying to name/define isn't a stream exactly; it goes rightdown/leftdown/rightup/leftup (or from the left, leftdown/rightdown/leftup/rightup) kinda moving your whole torso-attention from one side of the stage to the other, rolling your arms in a kinda barrel roll. There's a map of "Elements" by Lindsey Stirling that does it a whole lot

in reply to Dan moved, see pinned toot

Beat Saber

@ifixcoinops Yes, those are maybe piano streams? Barrel roll is a better name, imo. It's a really fun pattern, and feels good when you can nail it. I had a very pretty, atmospheric map sit for *months* in my Ex --> E+ struggles because of a fast burst of those in the middle of the song that just knotted my brain up and sometimes clashed my controllers painfully. 😁

Oh! And thank you for reminding me Lindsey Stirling exists! Some good-looking maps of her stuff out there. 💃🏾

An article on #Time website. #mastodon is becoming more noticed and known 😀 time.com/6229230/mastodon-euge…
in reply to Jan Wildeboer 😷

Mastodon, individualism

Thanks for sharing.

While I am grateful to Eugene Rotchko, I am also grateful to all involved in creating, maintaining, hosting, developing, posting and otherwise contributing to Mastodon.

But I feel the cult-of-personality messaging doesn't fit here, even if his intent is well stated. If newspapers like Time feel they need a Joseph Campbell style "hero" they have missed the point.

(plus the interviewer mentions funds/pay/money more times than necessary)

References to ableism & ableist language, blog post

In searching for an instance to join, I noticed that many do not mention ableism in their ToC. I care about avoiding ableist language, so I picked one that did mention it.

I do notice quite a bit of ableist language in the larger fediverse, so decided to write a blog post of common objections to avoiding ableist language, and my responses to them.

Here it is: medium.com/@kavanaram/avoid-ab…

#Disability #Ableism #AbleistLanguage @disability

For everyone here: I read there is a shortage of instances run by women admins. I know a few already, but I love to know more. I am one for one, but
vis.social/about/more and I thought mastodon.art/about/more is one too.
Mine i socialserver.science/about/mor… and is mainly aimed at scientists and scientific visualizers.
Please boost!

I see quite a lot of #Science posts expressing concern if The Public will follow their authors' #TwitterMigration over on here.

Here's the thing: they don't even have to. Every #Mastodon account has an #RSS feed. For example, here's mine:
mstdn.social/@rysiek.rss

Every hashtag has an RSS feed as well (as seen from a given instance), for example:
mstdn.social/tags/Science.rss

Your audiences can follow you without ever setting up an account on fedi, with any RSS reader.

Obviously #Fediverse is more than just Mastodon. I am not sure if #Pleroma and #Misskey offer RSS feeds of accounts and hashtags — would love input here!

I know some other fedi instance software also does offer RSS feeds. For example, @Castopod does: podcast.tomasino.org/@Solarpun…

Anyone who knows about RSS support in other fedi instance software, please do jump in and share!

in reply to Michał "rysiek" Woźniak · 🇺🇦

@Castopod how are people "bookmarking" individual posts and threads? I started a folder in my browser bookmarks but I'm sure there are other methods
in reply to Tommy Boy

favourites are stored in a list. I think your search does look through them. There is at least a chronological scroll through them. I sense there should be some tool out there to manage favourites via the api.
in reply to Microbiology Journal Club

I found bookmarks on a browser. But tell me about Biotech Without Borders. I'm a nerd, and a Swiftie, but try to keep those low key.
in reply to Tommy Boy

biotechwithoutborders.org/ and somewhat buried on the site loomio.com/biotech-without-bor… what's a Swiftie?
in reply to Microbiology Journal Club

I am a Taylor Swift fan and I'm not afraid to say it. Just like Van Halen, I'm attached to her older stuff.

Also an engineer but I work with scientists in a medical research lab. They're all super smart so I'm always interested in keeping up on biochem science.

in reply to Tommy Boy

But... I realize we have a common mission - I also run a nonprofit that includes a virtual makerspace to lure military veterans closer to real science. It's been hard to compete with the "do your own research" crowd but I haven't given up yet.
in reply to Tommy Boy

if i post stuff about Biotech without Borders it'll likely be from this account. If you're ever in the NYC area I'd be happy to show you the space.

@Smootasaurus yes we are a community lab. You can read more about it here in the #summerschool presentation I did on it: Community biology as an organizational framework for social change: a perspective from Biotech Without Borders

Up until yesterday/today it was feasible for me to respond to most un-described art from new users with a note about image descriptions. It's too busy for me to do that now, but if you want to ask people to consider it, please do it gently, and you can send people the following link that explains why it's important, and how to do it:

Remember the frustration of trying to understand an unfamiliar technology; be kind, be courteous, be compassionate. :bowie_stardust:

AYY, I finally took a ban on #twitter 😂

I'm unsure what the fuck did I break, but here are all of my tweets, and can you point to me which tweet was the one I broke rules with? (in dora's the explorer voice)

- nitter.esmailelbob.xyz/esmaile…

in reply to Esmail EL BoB :dinosaur:

I reached my goal on Twitter because my bio is "I'm here to rant about stuff, fight with people, and probably to get banned too. We will see." so I win, I guess

Just a reminder that all my music is free to download at jefftheworld.com , so please check it out if you're into #chiptune, #chipmusic, and other #micromusic.

In case you missed me a couple years ago! I finally got the footage from this event. I'm clearly not exceptionally animated in this video but I was exhausted because I was doing two shows in separate parts of the city and I'd been running back and forth between the two all night long. Worthwhile in the end, but oh-so-tiring.

yeah. I deleted my account there because of this.

Not that I had crypto-related projects, but I find it worry some to use a service where the owner starts banning projects based on personal opinions.

So what you're saying is... everything I post will end up on the instance I signed up to and not just folks following me for comic books and shitposts?? Wow I am so sorry

Do you have the "fastlane" activated in the Worker section of the admin panel @Fabián Bonetti it is an extra worker caring about the delivery of postings, so there is one for "the important" job.

@3goodthings #3goodthings

1. The August weather continues in Vermont, giving us time to stack the last of the wood, put the gardens to bed and hike.
2. I just deleted every game from my iPhone and look forward to the extra time I will have each day.
3. This space seems to be attracting some very nice people relieved and surprised that people here are so gracious and civil.

Oh, hey, since I have some new followers here: my game studio (Future Proof Games) does bi-weekly streams of other indies' games that we think are prolly somewhat in line with our values of empathy and compassion. Right now, @gregoryaveryweir is streaming the cool-looking dating sim "Arcade Spirits" over at twitch.tv/gregoryaveryweir/

I'll be in chat while Gregory plays. We'll geek about game design and talk about our work a bit during the stream.

in reply to Melissa Avery-Weir

If you're interested in our stuff, we live over at futureproofgames.com. We're working on a cyberthriller puzzle game called Exploit: Zero Day (exploitzeroday.com/) in which you play a hacktivist fighting against corporate and gov't (i.e., police) overreach and corruption.

But really: come hang out with us on #twitch this afternoon! Unless something goes very awry, Gregory should be streaming for the next 2-3 hours. twitch.tv/gregoryaveryweir/

“Your server doesn’t matter”
“It’s ok! You can still find people not in your tiny silos”

Absolute bullshit lol

I am being made to choose between making it easy to find fellow scicommers or fellow Philadelphians and it’s making me *so* mad. This app is godawful for “hyphenates” or those who are active in multiple communities.

It’s not IMPOSSIBLE to find each other, of course. Just more challenging than I find practical. Ugh.

in reply to Sarah McAnulty, Ph.D.

the official app is not recommended by many users on here. I use tusky and ive heard good things about metatext. In tusky I can see in my notifications when someone follows me but I do not have an easy way of see a full list of my followers. On the web interface I can see the full list. I'm also on scicomm.xyz and I didn't notice a particularly restrictive federation policy. If you are having trouble seeing folks it might be because the sever is just momentarily busy
in reply to Danny (he/they)

anyways welcome to the fediverse. If you haven't already checked out this help page I hope it helps clear up your questions fedi.tips/mastodon-and-the-fed…

While aus.social is paused for maintenance, I've reopened registrations at social.chinwag.org temporarily.

Please don't make me regret this. 😁

Starting again with a new profile, so time for an #introduction -

Hi! I'm Ben Werdmuller. I've been a blogger since 1998. These days I post regularly at werd.io. Writing is my first love, and I'm working on a novel.

I founded two FOSS social platforms (Elgg and Known), worked at a mission-driven investor, worked at Medium, and was Geek in Residence at Edinburgh Festivals. Today I'm CTO at The 19th (19thnews.org), a women-led newsroom that reports on gender, politics and policy.

Hi everyone 🥰 I've had this account for a while but never really used it. Now seems like a good time for an #introduction

Someone in a prison in #georgia sent me this. It is rat droppings in the cereal.

I’m posting this bc I am a #journalist who covers #prisons so I post a lot about deteriorating conditions behind bars. On the bird app ppl tend to respond with the worst things they can think of to say about how prisoners deserve this. I’m curious how people will respond over here… #TwitterMigration

in reply to Keri Blakinger

no human should be treated like this. NO human.

if we want to rehabilitate inmates, love, not cruelty, wins.

I've posted several times here but didn't do official #introductons post

I'm an unpublished #writer living in #Seattle #PNW who enjoys posting about #books (fiction, nonfiction, YA, adult, just about anything especially from diverse authors)

I make silly posts about live #sports of all kinds, unusual #history stories, jokes, animation, kdramas, gbbo, Top Chef, all sorts of things. I keep it relatively wholesome & try hard to avoid spoilers

Looks like folks are doing #introductions. All righty.

Howdy y’all! I was born hearing-free aka profoundly deaf. I read lips (more lip guessing). I'm a TEDx and professional speaker on DEI with a focus on #accessibility and disability awareness. I’m certified Accessibility Professional and #DigitalMarketer who works with companies to evangelize the creation of an inclusive and accessible culture. Proud Mom of 3. One is an international traveler and one is a rocket scientist in the making

hey everyone, started a new small thing, let's see where this goes!
