It turns out that fungus growing termites sometimes cultivate Termitomyces titanicus. This is an excellent scientific name. It's a fungi farmed by termites (like ants they do not allow it to produce "fruiting bodies" or mushroom caps while the colony is active.) But when a colony dies it will produce a massive mushroom over a meter wide.
And you can eat it!
Hence the species name.
It's never really found just living on its own without ants to take care of it?
Ant keep it clean, set the correct humidity, feed it plant matter...
In fact, many antkeepers have tried to farm it (so they have extra fungi for their pet ants) and it's basically been impossible for people to do it, even with clean rooms, carefully cut leaves and humidity chambers.
It's totally dependent on ants.
Now... could it maybe float as spores and join an existing ant colony? Maybe? IDK
i used to work on this in grad school - hard fungus to collect!
The fungus packs the hyphal swelling that it feeds to the ants with enzymes to degrade plant material. The ants eat the hyphal swellings, and then defacate on fresh plant material as they bring it into a nest. This is perhaps one reason why the fungus can't live alone now - it needs the ants to pre-treat the leaves with these enzymes in order to grow efficiently. Bizarre stuff!

FYI, if you've already grabbed the 2.0.0 release for the new stable 2026.01 please go download it again. There was something that got missed in the Dark Mode stylesheets. I didn't bump the version since it was supposed to be part of this update, I just replaced the release with the fixed version.
This does not affect the release for the old stable 2024.12 version.

interesting that KMart, AFAIK, has refused the request to just open the books and check the suppliers but has gone for "Look at these books over here instead. All Kmart goods, from our factories onward, are fine." Suppliers change all the time and may indeed have very dodgy labor practices.

Americans are always demanding that our immigrants accept the culture they've moved to... it's darkly hilarious that you'd be criticized by Americans for that very thing. I'd nope out and tell them to enjoy their fascism. But then that's why I'm not to be trusted with people-ing.
BTW does that upcoming 💰💰 dual citizen fee in the UK apply to the whole Commonwealth (i.e. you), or just Brits? I don't know that you guys would ever have occasion to go to the UK... but that "fee" was so eye-watering it seems punitive. This is a hell of a time to crack down on dual citizenship!

in reply to Muse • • •Preserved within the down-faulted interior of the Saguenay Graben are two large eroded, isolated patches, known as outliers, of Paleozoic, Middle Ordovician, sedimentary rock composed of limestones and shales overlying Precambrian basement. The Lac-Saint-Jean outlier rests against the south wall of the graben south of Lac Saint-Jean and extends to the west of the lake. The Chicoutimi (Saguenay) outlier rests against the north wall of the graben and extends southward to a few kilometers from the Saguenay River north of Chicoutimi. These Middle Ordovician sedimentary rocks consist of sandstones, micritic limestones and highly fossiliferous, alternating beds of limestones and shales. These rocks have been preferentially eroded by repeated glaciations exhuming the Saguenay Graben.
Some good soil there!
