Sunrise creeping over Holland Lake. We'd gone on this little (3mi/4.8km) hike as a "meh, why not" before leaving to head back to our guard station – pretty glad we did. #montana #nature

A little pika graced our walk last night! Well, three did, but two were more shy than usual. Which is fair, as there are foxes and eagles around here. After so many years looking for pikas, it's almost silly to just walk to the talus slope behind the guard station and find them. #montana #nature

Boopin' to the Twin Lakes. The trail was so pretty – many of them in this area are admittedly a little samey, but when the light is nice and it's not too hot out, pretty good. #montana #nature

Looking down into Blodgett Canyon. Our arrival in the Bitterroots coincided with the arrival of smoke from eastern Oregon and Washington, which is unfortunate on many levels. Still really enjoyed seeing the terrain, though. #montana #nature

Sunset down Rock Creek. We've been wading around since my wife got very into the idea of finding sapphires in the water, and has now found like 15. Not bad! I don't think we count as rockhounds yet, but "rock appreciators" perhaps. #montana #nature

Lil' guys of Rock Creek. The pika were a wonderful surprise; we've been hoping to see one for years now, and now we find that they're a 10 minute walk from the guard station! #montana #nature

Check out those whiskers! This little harbour seal was picked up by my team in October. Found on a beach with a life threatening condition (mouth rot), he was uplifted and taken to a sanctuary for rehabilitation.

He has a special place in my heart as this was my first rescue. 10/10 perfect gentleman, didn't fight/bite me!

He was recently released into the wild, and is out there somewhere living his best life 🦭

I don't divide a year into four seasons, instead I notice the change through blossoms. The blossoms don't follow a chronological order. They overlap, reverse, even repeat sometimes. Each mountainside has its own climate. The rocks can be burning hot on one side and covered with snow on the other. Here are the blossoms of a climate that's warming up:
1. Crocus time is cool and crispy. The blossoms can poke directly from the snow.
2. Primroses come after crocuses, although sometimes they meet each other on the same slope. Then crocuses dissolve while primroses stay. The air is warmer and it smells of soil and plants.
3. Anemone time means you can be confident it's warm on their field. You might need sunscreen, and even look for shadows to chill in.
4. Hyacinths arrive when you start keeping the solar zenith in mind, and making sure you've got your cap on. The bees are everywhere, and the air is so sweet that you want to eat it with a spoon.
