I wish I didn't have to tell you about this again, but I do. It's not being reported much in the news — and you know why?
Because it's not 'new' (the origin of the word 'news'), it's old. This has been going on for months now, and corporate news outlets are simply tired of reporting it. But it is still happening.
Canada's boreal forests are burning up.
At least 1100 fires are active, more than 700 out of control. Over 13 million hectares have been burned so far, with no end in sight. It's an unprecedented climate and environmental disaster.

A cost-effective, scalable & available solution to reduce the #climate impact of flying?
Yes please. https://blog.google/technology/ai/ai-airlines-contrails-climate-change/
Contrails - those thin, white lines behind airplanes - account for ~35% of aviation's #ClimateChange impact.
New research reveals how #AI & satellite imagery can help us reduce their warming effects.

#Climate
It’s worth noting that by Fall of 2012, the majority of both Republican & Democrat voters acknowledged #ClimateChange is occurring. But not the majority of all politicians.
Back then, I ran large public opinion surveys out of UT Austin & it was the first time citizens from both parties agreed. (Here’s a 2015 SciAm piece w totals https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/plugged-in/over-3-out-of-4-americans-now-acknowledge-climate-change-is-occurring-including-the-majority-of-republicans/)
We can’t said what changed attitudes, but a drought had impacted U.S. crops that summer & the pope was also discussing #climate. /2

NYT’s opinion writer Paul Krugman is declaring #climate is now a culture war issue 🤔
I worked in the U.S. Senate ~20 years ago. Covered climate as a journalist. Cofounded an NGO focused on science policy issues during elections. Am finishing a dissertation on how Congress has made decisions about #science policy for the last 1/2 century - with climate as a central theme.
This isn’t new. #ClimateChange has *always* been a culture war issue.
The extreme heat has devastated corals. As a former marine scientist, this is a truly heartbreaking read:
“The coral didn’t even have a chance to bleach, it just died. It just felt like, ‘Oh my God, we’re in the apocalypse.’ What’s happening?”

Climate change threatens 771 endangered plant and lichen species: Despite the risk, very few of these species have recovery plans that directly address climate change
All plants and lichens listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act are sensitive to climate change but there are few plans in place to address this threat directly, according to new research.ScienceDaily
Whenever I need cheering up about the climate, things like this really help:
"During the 2010s the levelised cost (that is the average lifetime cost of equipment, per megawatt hour of electricity generated) of solar, offshore wind and onshore wind fell by 87%, 62% and 56%, respectively"
And that dramatic fall in costs isn't stopping.
Even the most short-term thinkers must be convinced by that!

We spend far too much time dreading what our #climate future *may* look like instead of envisioning better outcomes & working together to achieve them.
Yes, we need to hear about extreme storms, floods, droughts & biodiversity loss. But there’s more to climate change than doomsday narratives.
We must highlight the incredible work being done by scientists, innovators & communities to meet these challenges.

Officially erased my bird site presence this morning and with it my associated contacts. I haven't seen a wide-scale migration yet of the #weather / #wxtwitter community, which accounted for half of my Twitter contacts.
As a sort of final #introduction post and calling card for the weather community, one of my primary uses of Twitter was to share my #WeatherPhotography and #storm reports. I'll probably continue to share weather and #climate content here! CW's as needed. Some of my faves below.

A few folks have asked about solutions.
While agriculture’s role in #climate change is often ignored, climate solutions related to that sector are largely 1) already available 2) scalable & 3) significant.
Think precision (aka “smart”) agriculture, breeding crops for drought & heat tolerance, limiting soil erosion through farming practices that don’t disrupt soil structure, emerging alternative proteins, reducing food waste. And on and on… /2
I don’t like to mention that rich guy over at #Twitter, but he’s rambling on about #ClimateChange & agriculture, which is in my wheelhouse. And he is also unabashedly & absurdly wrong.
Misinformation on climate change is irresponsible & dangerous, so let’s be clear:
25% to 30% of global emissions come from our #food system.
As UT Austin’s Michael Webber describes, agriculture is a major cause, victim and - importantly - meaningful solution to #climate change.

As a scientist who studies #science policy & risk communication, as a science journalist who has been writing in popular outlets about #ClimateChange & #scicomm for 20 years, & as a former congressional staffer focused on #climate & #energy policy in the early 2000s… This article is frustrating.

Rising temperatures could transform plankton and other tiny aquatic organisms into a huge source of #carbon #emissions, a little-known—and potentially catastrophic—climate tipping point that could accelerate #globalwarming.
A study, published Thursday in Functional Ecology, found that rising temperatures cause a sudden shift in these microbes’ eating habits, flipping them from carbon absorbers to carbon emitters.

I’m not linking to any articles in the news today about how we’ve surpassed some so-called “climate threshold,” but its frustrating to see the associated misleading, doomsday headlines & imagery.
