Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg called the outcome of the 28th United Change Climate Conference a "betrayal and a stab in the back."

Thunberg said: "The final outcome of COP28 is not a 'historic win'. It is yet another example of extremely vague and watered-down texts full of loopholes that in no way is even close to being sufficient for staying within the 1.5°C limit and ensuring climate justice."

Speaking to Reuters at a protest outside the Swedish parliament, Thunberg said the agreement was the "bare minimum" and rejected the idea that it was a "first step."

"We've already had first steps and they haven't led us anywhere," Thunberg added. "The emissions are still increasing. We are experiencing record highs."

She also questioned the validity of U.N. climate negotiations.

"This COP has once again proven that the COP processes are not working in our favor," she told Reuters. "They are not designed to solve the climate crisis. They are working as an alibi for world leaders" to hide behind their signature on a document while continuing to do nothing.

"We need drastic, immediate emission cuts," said Thunberg, "and binding commitments from the largest contributors of the climate crisis to finance loss and damages adaptation and a just transition in the most affected areas."

Our world is in crisis. Extreme weather caused by the climate emergency is wreaking havoc in our communities and ecosystems across the globe, causing social insecurity and harm to people.

The biggest cause of this crisis is fossil fuels — coal, oil, and gas.

The fossil fuel industry is driving a predatory and destructive economic system that harms people and the planet, fuelling climate break down.

Fossil fuels are bad for the climate, for ecosystems, for our people, for our health, for our democracies, and for our economies.

The science is clear: what the world needs now is a rapid and just transition to an energy and economic system that is efficient, fair, and universal. A system based on clean energy sources and produced with respect for nature and the sovereign rights of Indigenous peoples.

This September, as world leaders discuss climate action at the United Nations in New York, people on every continent will join the largest-ever globally coordinated action and together WE WILL end fossil fuels.

The climate crisis is escalating but so is the global movement for climate justice. We need all hands on deck to win this fight.

It can be argued that electric vehicles are an improvement when replacing ICE vehicles.

But that misses a much bigger point — which is that the very best car is *not* an electric car. The very best car is no car at all!

Building electric cars requires massive use of fossil fuels, including petrochemicals for the manufacture of plastics. In addition, mining of lithium for batteries as well as trawling for other minerals in the deep ocean is environmentally disastrous, killing biodiversity while polluting our water, soil, and air.

The kind of “Green Growth” championed by capitalists and politicians, which features more electric cars, a bit of solar, and a few wind farms — along with continued use of fossil fuels — is not a good answer. It does not solve any of our problems, and in fact only makes them worse.

Say NO to more cars, of any kind. Push instead for active transportation and for improved public transit.

Continued economic growth is unsustainable. Period. The only logical choice for us and for the biosphere is de-growth.

Solar, Hope, Cosy, and Functional

I am excited about how many people have embraced solarpunk! I feel great that people are imagining the means to a better future! I am equally excited by the growth of hopepunk. We need to stay strong in our visions of a bright future.

I am bringing “cosy” and “functional” into my work, because it is easy to think stories must have grand spectacles and nearly insurmountable conflict to be interesting. Many movements for change may have had notable moments, but most of the heavy work was done on a persistent everyday manner.

Rosa Parks deliberately sat in a seat reserved for white people on a bus. She did not come riding a horse up to the steps of Congress, swinging a magic sword over her head. She was not a “chosen one”. She did not carry laser pistols. And yet that moment captured people’s imaginations. Suddenly, we all understand that we can have a part in creating change.

Portraying genuinely good friendships that help sustain us while we do the work for change is not only cosy and functional, but can prove pivotal in making our world one of kindness, security, and a healthy environment. So many new and important things can be said through the arts. They need to come from our experience of what is good, and true, and compassionate.
