Please boost: If you are in STEM (esp Botany, Germplasm Conservation, Horticulture) and can help me put together a CV and "marketing strategy" that would be attractive in the EU, NZ, etc. please give me a holler. I'm not sure what I can afford, but if you do sliding scale or are open to barter, that would be lovely.

Ideally I'm looking for something that plays to my interdisciplinary strengths, ability to knit micro with macro, and increasing #accessibility in STEM.

US to cut billions in medical research funding

“Sick kids may not get the treatment they need. Clinical trials may be shut down abruptly with dangerous consequences. Just because Elon Musk doesn’t understand indirect costs doesn’t mean Americans should have to pay the price with their lives"

could this be the ugliest article on wikipedia?

whose idea was it to use all these different font colours with drop shadows? why do so many headings have these green backgrounds that stretch across the whole page? how are graphs still broken with no fallback (even a static image) since april 2023? what's with all the gaps in the page?

Wow this article is atrocious. Going to make some superficial edits but I think it will need a more thorough deep cleaning to be fixed

AAMC Statement on Drastic Cuts to NIH-Funded Research

"Every American has benefited from NIH-supported medical research conducted at medical schools, academic health systems, and teaching hospitals nationwide. Every American will be harmed by the undermining of this long-standing partnership between academic institutions and the federal government"

Thanks, Jen!

Oh no. NIH is reportedly capping the "overhead" paid on research grants to 15% of direct costs, which would represent a 60-80% reduction for most grant recipients. I'd expect NSF and other funding agencies may likely follow suit.

Why is this bad? Overhead on grants is what funds most of the infrastructure - office space, administrative staff, utilities, etc - at research universities. Without it, they simply can't operate.

If you work at an r1 in the US, it's likely that at least some of them will bankrupt in the next year. New guidance issued instantly capping indirects at 15%.

Those that don't go bankrupt are going to be purged of a substantial amount of staff and faculty.

This is why people on Steam don’t want more launchers and forced sign ins. The PlayStation Network is down.
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

Back when I'd use a potato computer, often the presence of any launchers would be the difference between usable and unplayable. So even besides the aspect of preservation, this sight is extremely hurtful. 😔

Good old days when games came on physical media and didn't require any online services to be able to play. Especially singleplayer-only games.

UK demands access to Apple users' encrypted data

The UK government has demanded to be able to access encrypted data stored by Apple users worldwide in its cloud service. Currently only the Apple account holder can access data stored in this way - the tech giant itself cannot view it. The demand has been served by the Home Office under the Investigatory Powers Act (IPA), which compels firms to provide information to law enforcement agencies.

No Matter Who Is At The Top The UK Government Is Still Authoritarian...and wants a Permanent Back Door

"Apple is likely to stop offering encrypted storage in the UK as a result of the demand."

I'd prefer if this old book wasn't so timely, but it's 2025 & here we are.

Climate change, vaccines, pandemic preparedness & the future of science, innovation & leadership.

My thinking has evolved in the 16+ years since this was published, but so much remains regretfully relevant.

in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

what's ironic (or tragic) is that every modern convenience, luxury and things needed for such a large society to live is owed to science.

(my favorite third culturist), has your thinking evolved to see the science gap as a major form of inequality dividing us? Maybe the next book? 😉

I didn't misrepresent anything in my recent Stop Killing Games article.

I reproduced the UK Gov statement, and then gave my own short comment, which boils down to: I don't think it's going to work to change the law, and think it's a good idea for people to look to other games and for stores to clearly note if a game requires an online connection.

Literally no misrepresentation there at all, I didn't even comment on the petition details itself. As usual, people like to make crap up.

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

thank you for all your work. Sorry to hear you come across comments like that

I'm having a hard time understanding what is going on with the Kerrygold #Cooperative. It doesn't seem like a demutualization event, but people are getting big payouts? Kerry Group and the dairy co-op are splitting up and the big company is buying back its shares from the co-op, so that's where the cash is coming from? But non-dairy producing co-op members are also getting cashed out? Do you understand @ntnsndr

irishtimes.com/business/2024/1…

in reply to Zane Selvans

What I mean is that business reporting so often treats economic activity like a numbers game (line goes up, trade goes down), without actually bothering to explain what you're asking for: What is at stake for actual people, for workers, and who wins and who loses.

in reply to Joseph Teller

From its inception - based on invading privacy and sharing PID/info on girls in the dorm, and then monetizing it (after wresting control from co-founders...) It's that old "feelings of entitlement" & lack of empathy/remorse. Zuck is pathetic - as a human. He's ok at hacking and stealing every bit of data that floats in and taking it as. his own... /rant
