Gem corn!

Got some seeds years ago and keep putting a few in at the edge of the plot as a reminder that corn genetics are weird. Last year got two plants with red leaves and stems and mostly red kernels. This year favored blue. The birds have gotten into it a bit and most cobs get left out for them.

Our local edible garden trail is on. I met a woman who’s turned a plain grassy slope into terraced and mulched raised beds with many types of citrus, pomegranates, almonds, every vegetable, and salvias to bring in pollinators. It took her five years from grass slope to the capacity to feed her neighbours in community dinners, her next move. I came home with a salvia cutting I don’t have and I’ll send back to her some of mine. She gave me so much hope.

First big batch of Costoluto Fiorentino tomatoes for roasting with herbs also from the garden (sage, thyme, new fennel seeds, garlic).

Ooh. It’s blooming!

Or hatching crustaceans and mollusks.

The liatris has these long flower spikes going. Some of the buds are showing a little pink at last. Maybe the bumblebees will start working on opening them.

One of the mystery plants (Liatris?) is living its best life in the garden. The other one keeled over immediately. :blobcatlaugh:

Waiting patiently to see what the flowers look like!

#Gardening #Mystery

I’m considering moving these plants to a spot on the ground. They don’t feel like hanging pot plants, since there’s no hint of a flower yet and they’re probably closer together than they’d prefer. At least they’re not dead?

Updated photo: what do you think?

I’m thinking maybe freesia and iris?

(The wood shavings are from the ladybug deposition. The ladybugs all left.)

#Gardening #Mystery

Whelp. I thought I’d planted some extra crocosmia bulbs in here but I’m thinking those leaves toward the front do not look like crocosmia leaves.

Chaos gardening strikes again!

The floofening of the liatris continues. It looks a little like Pepe the King Prawn, but purple.

Update on the local Seed Library (see previous posts in this thread for background)!

We've got official approval to start building it out!

We'll start the official planning, building, and then community awareness initiatives and concurrent programming and training!

Yay free seeds for the town!

Yay free classes on gardening and hydroponics!

Gardening is one thing. Community is another thing entirely.

Build community. Feed each other.

THEY DID IT!!!!

My local library built the seed library!

The local Master Gardeners provided a lot of the intitial seeds (oh my gosh we are stocked!!!). They used an old card catalogue to store them. Today's the kickoff!

The idea is you "check out seeds" from the library, plant/grow/harvest, let some go to seed, then "return the seeds" back to the library!

Free seeds for everyone!

Could use some more opinions on this from folks familiar with Southern US #gardening, climate, and #wildlife: https://www.reddit.com/r/plantclinic/comments/14et4y1/help_my_baby_please/

Current off-reddit hypothesis is that caterpillars went to town on it and that it'll probably recover now that their busy season is over. The city balcony it's on is on the 3rd floor, but near some trees.

Was rearranging my container garden when I came across this lovely fellow living between them, with cats sleeping nearby no less! #gardening #mice

My new #podcast episode is out: When #Gardeners Run Wild! SEVEN hours of work only in the studio. Many more for researching and scripting. #Podcasting is HARD work.

I have to hurry for an appointment, and hopefully get to a supermarket this evening: the fridge is almost empty. Sleep!!! (Tomorrow I submit the time markers.)

You can listen to #NatureMatchCuts for free but also support my work/my fridge.😋 Find every info, platform and support button on https://naturematchcuts.net #gardening #farming

this is something I had no idea about. Very inspiring and her work is beautiful.

if you're getting ready to grow some veggies this year, maybe my scheduling tool will be useful to you. I'm test running it this year but it's already helped me have a better understanding of the growing season than if I was trying to make a paper schedule like I've done in the past. #gardening

January is "watch a bunch of gardening videos on youtube" month for us northern-nothern hemisphere people. Here are my favorite channels:

Glad I've plant so many seeds because most of the plants died. The few that survived seem to going strong. This is the first chile (de arbol, I think) flower of the season. @plants #gardening #hotpeppers #chilis
