But in 2009, astronaut Leland Melvin snuck his adorable rescue dogs, Jake & Scout, into Johnson #Space Center for his official picture.

In addition to going on 2 space missions, Melvin had been drafted into the NFL. He’s now an advocate for STEAM education & animal welfare. lelandmelvin.com

Sadly, Jake & Scout passed away, but when Melvin published his 2017 memoir Chasing Space, he chose this wonderful photo for the cover. #HistoryRemix

In 1952, Katherine Johnson heard there were open positions at the all-Black West Area Computing section at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics’ (later NASA) Langley laboratory.

The motif was originally a kind of idea sketch for a stage background. The whole thing has developed in a different direction and it disappeared into the depths of my hard drive (of such images there are plenty). The format bothered me from the start, didn't come into its own on any screen, but conveyed the idea with the paper planes well. Then #Procreate came along and it has 3D objects on board, e.g. a skateboard - that's when it clicked ;)

Er wirft einen zerknüllten Brief in den Weltraum. Dieser entfaltet sich auf dem Weg nach unten zur Erde und wird zu einem Papierflieger. Die Flugbahn wird durch eine verschnörkelte Schreibschrift nachgezogen. Dort steht (kaum zu lesen): ,Songez à librement vivre', was übersetzt bedeutet, Seid bedacht, frei zu leben. English text: An illustration in an elongated, oval, portrait format. In the upper quarter you can see a sun and a spiral galaxy. Below you can see a patched up metal moon with a friendly face and a very long pointed nose. On the nose stands a man in musketeer clothes, also with a very long pointed nose. The man is Cyrano de Bergerac on his way back to Earth from his trip to the moon. He throws a crumpled letter into space. This unfolds on its way down to earth and becomes a paper airplane. The flight path is traced by squiggly cursive writing. There it says (barely legible): Songez à librement vivre', which translates as, Be mindful to live freely.

This is a set of five 19x27" (48x69cm) posters, presenting the solar system as a collection of worlds, including Sun, planets, dwarf planets, asteroids, and moons, with an emphasis on the solid body objects you could visit (theoretically and radiation allowing). It wasn't practical to keep all the objects to the same scale, but I made effort to minimize the different scales shown and make the differences clear. As a mosaic, they take up about 8-ft (2.4m) of wall space. Or you can frame them separately and spread them around a room (as for a classroom). I still have quite a few on the shelf, available for sale in our Anansi Spaceworks "bookstore". Designed by Terry Hancock (me), using free NASA imagery and data. https://books.anansi.space

NASA's Spitzer Spots a Perfectly Sideways Galaxy Galaxy NGC 5866 lies 44 million light-years from Earth and has a diameter of roughly 60,000 light-years — a little more than half the diameter of our own Milky Way galaxy. From our viewpoint, NGC 5866 is oriented almost exactly edge-on, yielding most of its structural features invisible. Spitzer detects infrared light, and the red color here corresponds to a wavelength typically emitted by dust. The clean edges of the dust emission from NGC 5866 indicate that there is a very flat ring or disk of dust circling the outer region of the galaxy. Spitzer took this image during its "cold" mission, which ended in 2009. The colors represent three infrared wavelengths captured by the Infrared Array Camera instrument. Blue light corresponds to a wavelength of 3.6 microns, produced mainly by stars; green corresponds to 4.5 microns, and red corresponds to 8 microns. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, manages the Spitzer Space Telescope mission for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. Science operations are conducted at the Spitzer Science Center at Caltech in Pasadena. Space operations are based at Lockheed Martin Space Systems in Littleton, Colorado.
