While #NPR and #PBS have quit #Twitter (without mentioning #Mastodon however), Germany's biggest public broadcaster #ARD and #ZDF are not only already testing their own instances for quite a while (dev.ard.social/public/local & zdf.social/public/local): The first proper account is now live and posts news articles from northern Germany – @NDR

Let's see, if NPR and PBS find their way here. Oh and where is the #BBC?

Paktodon.asia is a server for the Global South, let's welcome them to the Fediverse!

:Fediverse: paktodon.asia

Official description: "Paktodon.Asia is the online public square for the Global South - a safe 'azad' mastodon server for ordinary citizens, students, and activists, to share, learn, grow, and collaborate in. Though we are all pakistani, Paktodon.Asia is open to friends from across the world!"

#Twitter copies #mastodon with their emoji in names 😂

Saw this emoji on twitter account and copied it then boom, I'm twitter now

@Gargron

What to say, this is probably the worst smear campaign I have seen for now and I can't say that I'm sorry because people like
@vyr exist cause it's not our fault that they are as they are.

The only thing I would like to ask you is to not even answer this kind of "sh**". It's your precious time and your life and it's up to you in what to invest it.

Give them "cookies" by paying attention and they will never let you go.

Please!
Just ignore and go on, as hard as it is.

I'd love to see these three new official #Mastodon instances:

social.whitehouse.gov
social.senate.gov
social.house.gov

And everyone gets an account during their tenure on their respective instance.

“Among the unexpected sources of support for the magazine was the #fediverse—the collection of decentralized Mastodon servers that soared in popularity following Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter. Many comments on the GoFundMe page mention that the donors learned about the Observer through #Mastodon—where the Texas Observer was one of the first journalistic outlets to set up its own server, @jamescanup said.”

"Asteroid 2023 DZ2 will pass Earth more than 100,000 miles (161,000 km) away–about half the distance to the Moon–making its close approach at 3:51 p.m. EDT (12:51 p.m. PDT)."

Live cameras catch the action.

After a couple of days on #Mastodon I’m very impressed & excited to be part of this growing community! #mastodonmigration

My only humble suggestion is that it needs more tardigrades aka "water bears."

Tardigrades have survived every mass #extinction on Earth since they evolved about a 1/2 billion years ago. There are ~1,300 known species. And millions of years from now, they won’t even notice we’re gone. #SharedPlanet

There are meany subcultures on #mastodon that have the idea that they are the ONLY subculture and everything they think is the big story of #fedivers culture. This is bad behaver and obviously not true.

What we do have in common is #4opens and a history of #openweb netticate. The rest is a point of view, valid for its group, but not the "big" story.

Good for #mainstreaming people to understand this healthy, but messy #open culture we have here.

This IEEE piece on the rise of #Mastodon & expanding #Fediverse with thoughtful observations from @tchambers is worth a read.

Decentralized Social Media Rises as #Twitter Melts Down: spectrum.ieee.org/mastodon-soc…

I’m delighted to see the Rachel Carson post included & I hope it inspires more folks to learn about her legacy.
(h/t @paulvg)

How should we organize socialhub.activitypub.rocks/t/… in #mastodon, the #Fediverse and the #openweb in general?

Replying to all the random individuals that seem to think that I’m “endorsing” one of the Fediverse products over any other, and seem to be making a big deal over #akkoma vs #mastodon etc.

That’s not the case. I’m actually a horrible MIS person, and I would never want to maintain my own server. I’m a programmer for chrissake!

The same way you should fear me if I hold a soldering iron, you should be very very nervous if I were to do any server management.

So all credit (or blame) for the choice of Fediverse platform goes to @monsieuricon, who maintains kernel.org and just made it really easy for me to try this out.

… and on a similar note: not only am I not much of a MIS person, I’m also not much of a social networking person.

I foresee a lot of disappointment in the future of any followers of this account 🔮.

#Help wanted: Could you please fill in and circulate (#retoot #reblog ) the following survey on #Mastodon and #fediverse ?

warwick.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/…

This survey is part of a #research project led by @__nate__ and me and it is aimed at understanding the reasons that motivated people to using Mastodon, their expectations in doing so and their current experience using it.

Recently I found that quite a few of my #Twitter and #Mastodon followers are working in high-performance #computing (HPC). At first I was surprised because I’m not a #HPC person, even if I love high performance computers. Then I realized that there are quite few overlaps, and one of my best friends is also deeply involved in HPC. My work, #logging, is also a fundamental part of HPC environments.

Watching @tchambers (and team) doing some super interesting and informative work on the growth of the #Fediverse and #Mastodon - this looks extremely interesting, and looks to become a quarterly update 👀 (also, if you're interested in this space, follow him!) indieweb.social/@tchambers/109…

New research from my team on the #TwitterMigration:

This is our first quarterly update analyzing which platforms are growing - esp #mastodon & #postnews. Includes new data on users posting, app downloads & more.

In Albert Hirschman's classic treatise *Exit, Voice, and Loyalty,* stakeholders in an institution who are dissatisfied with its direction have two choices: #voice (arguing for changes) or #exit (going elsewhere). Rozenshtein argues that Fediverse users (especially users of #Mastodon, the most popular part of the Fediverse) have more voice *and* more #FreedomOfExit:

New blog post: Client-side comments with #Mastodon on a static #Jekyll website at jan.wildeboer.net/2023/02/Jeky…

Replies to this toot will show up as comments on my blog! It's magic! And this post explains how that works.

Yes #itWorksLikeEmail but still I really don't understand how #friendica works. For example on this thread libranet.de/display/0b6b25a8-1… the original post was sent to 103 remote servers, my friend digit@iviv.hu commented on it. My response to his comment was sent to 24 servers, but my response to my own comment was sent to 105 servers. I suspect him being on Diaspora* and most of my contacts being on platforms like #Mastodon than only support #ActivityPub has an influence here.

If I try to reference the same post from my Masto account, I thought it would look super weird, like I was talking to myself in a way that didn't make any sense, but I actually only see the OP https://hostux.social/@fu@libranet.de/109835482564374801 while when I search for my later comment I see it libranet.de/display/0b6b25a8-2… and the comment of my own I was replying to, but not the OP !Friendica Support

There are three kinds of timelines on here:

Home - Main timeline, shows all posts by accounts you follow, plus posts which include hashtags you follow

Local - Shows all public posts by all accounts on your server

Federated - Shows all public posts by all accounts that your server has noticed

On the official Mastodon app, Local is called "Community", click the magnifying glass 🔍 to see it.

Click here for practical tips on using timelines:

I’m lucky in my work to see firsthand the impact of what we do on systems and the people that run them.

We’re supporting @Mastodon through #FastForward because @Gargron, @renchap, and the entire #Mastodon team are doing important work and we want to help them scale it with integrity.

Well and it’s pretty neat to have a front-row seat (walk-on part?) to the revolution 😎 #TheFutureIsFederated

Nature has just put out correspondence that calls for scholarly institutes to join the #fediverse, and start their own #mastodon instances.

Together with that, the writers put out a longer article, 'Mastodon over Mammon', that explains the argument in greater detail, and is worth reading.

Great work by @brembs et al, which points to the core issue: the private ownership of public commons.

Full version:

Nature Correspondence:

Many scholars are leaving Twitter for #Mastodon, a public, decentralized alternative, impervious to private take-over:

science.org/content/article/mu…

Scholarly organizations are already supporting this migration:

nature.com/articles/d41586-023…

and

doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7643817

There are analogous solutions for another public good in private hands: journals. There are even levers the scholarly community could pull to incentivize an analogous migration:

doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.5526634

What are we waiting for?

🤩 Super nice!

SURF, the Dutch ICT provider for the #educational sector, now provides sector-wide authenticated access to #Mastodon at social.edu.nl ! 🥳 Everybody at #universities in the Netherlands can now easily join Mastodon using their existing university credentials.

Following @SylviaFysica fantastic suggestion, they adopted the awesome name @SLURF 🐘 😆

I wonder if #Pachyderms think about the folks who make these posts for us.

I do. I think wow, someone takes time off of their day to day hey you guys, look what happened while you were asleep. And it was only 430km in the sky. #Travelling at 25,000 km/hour.

To the person behind the #NASA badge here on #Mastodon, thank you for #keeping us enthralled.

Between #Mastodonau & #Mastodonlol, it's a good thing #Mastodon gGmbH has put an end to using Mastodon in new domain names without explicit licensing.

The tech media will be having a field day with this soon

I wonder how many other significant instances are ran by people with personality trait issues &their users &their content is at the whims of unreasonable people, not suited for the responsibilities and sensibilities required.

With #mastodon and the #fedivers over the last 5 years, we are at this #web01.5 #reboot stage of the #openweb An article here on this (click past the broken SSL please)hamishcampbell.com/2023/02/10/…

#mastodontips #MastodonSupport #Mastodon @Gargron Question:

Why are these showing up as two different #Hashtags ?

I find this problematic since not everyone capitalizes Hashtags like I do or someone else does

What's the difference between #DoctorWho and #doctorwho ??

Let's talk about engagement on the #fediverse:

The @EU_Commission
has 71k followers on #mastodon. They have 1.7 million followers on Twitter.

The same post got:
363 boosts on Mastodon
110 retweets on Twitter

So the same message got 3 times as many engagements on the #openweb

We really need to celebrate that a group of grassroots #4opens activists got the #EU to use #fediverse #openweb apps. This shows where the value comes from, good to link to this thanks

Hi #science #research #mastodon community! A few days ago, a post of mine recieved a lot of attention. Thanks for the engagement and the very interesting suggestions! neuromatch.social/@LeonDLotter…

On #Twitter, I loved the common practice of writing threads explaining new #preprints and #papers in an understandable way.
I uttered my concern that through the chronological timeline here people might miss interesting science. A solution would be to agree on names for hashtags and/or a.gup.pe groups to ease tracking these "paper threads".

Following tags were named more then once: #newPaper #paperThread #preprint #researchPaper #mastoPrint #tootPrint.
Also, there was #tootorial, but that might be a slightly different category?

I heard people like participation - so let's do a poll! What's your favourite tag for threads explaining research articles? 📊 Multiple choices possible!

#twitterMigration #scienceTwitter #scientist @academicchatter @neuroscience @cognition @psychology @phdstudents

  • #newPaper (26%, 67 votes)
  • #paperThread (37%, 93 votes)
  • #preprint (27%, 68 votes)
  • #researchPaper (34%, 85 votes)
  • #tootPrint (9%, 23 votes)
250 voters. Poll end: 2 years ago

Furthermore, in my first post, many very cool projects were mentioned, aiming to bring "algorithm-curation" to #Mastodon. Here are some links!
