Viruses that roam the fungal kingdom knowablemagazine.org/content/a…
"today, scientists researching fungal #viruses are enjoying a golden age of discovery... finding all sorts of weird and wonderful interactions between #fungi and their viruses and even between fungal viruses and #plants or #animals. Most fungal viruses don’t seem to do much of anything to their hosts, but others cause sickness or offer surprising benefits."

500,000 Taxa on iNaturalist! inaturalist.org/blog/103155-50…
"that’s 23% of all known species on Earth... #Birds stand out: nearly all species have been observed on #iNaturalist. 349 species (2%) are yet to be recorded... For #reptiles, #amphibians, & #mammals there are about 10x as many unobserved... Like birds, most unobserved species only remain in tropical regions. This is not the case for #fish, #plants, #invertebrates, & #fungi where there are still many left to observe in all parts of the globe"

Born in 1897, Janaki Ammal was a pioneering botanist who studied plant breeding, genetics & cytogenetics.
Ammal overcame both gender & caste discrimination & was the first Indian woman to obtain a Ph.D. in botany in the U.S.
Her research was crucial for developing high-yield varieties of sugarcane, eggplant & magnolias. Ammal also promoted conservation & was a pioneer of indigenous approaches to the environment. smithsonianmag.com/science-nat… #HistoryRemix #science #history #plants

Climate change threatens 771 endangered plant and lichen species: Despite the risk, very few of these species have recovery plans that directly address climate change
All plants and lichens listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act are sensitive to climate change but there are few plans in place to address this threat directly, according to new research.ScienceDaily

Future Proof Plays: Strange Horticulture
I absolutely adored this game. I finished two endings the same weekend as this stream. If you aren't in the mood to play in real dirt, why not instead play in virtual dirt while unraveling the inner workings of a coven and a cult? 🤷🏾♀️
This was part of my game studio's Future Proof Plays series of streams. Check out our upcoming schedule and our entire set of archives (including my partner's streams) over on YouTube. Follow me over on Twitch to watch my streams live.

Current off-reddit hypothesis is that caterpillars went to town on it and that it'll probably recover now that their busy season is over. The city balcony it's on is on the 3rd floor, but near some trees.

Mycorrhizas drive the evolution of plant adaptation to drought - Communications Biology
Phylogenetic comparative analysis using data of 1,638 species of angiosperms and gymnosperms suggests that the evolution of plant adaptation to critical environmental change in water availability across global climates is dependent on mycorrhizas.Nature
Some plants can monitor #environmental #conditions around them and release #seeds at times #optimal for #dispersal.
#Dandelion seeds close up a bit in #wet #weather and don't travel as far as in their more open, #dry weather form. New #research (Seale et al. 2022) shows that dandelions hold on to seeds in wet weather and release them more in dry weather.
Do #plants exhibit #behavior? I would argue, yes.

Environmental morphing enables informed dispersal of the dandelion diaspore
The dandelion diaspore changes its shape depending on the moisture levels in the air, and this morphing enhances the dispersal potential of the seeds regardless of the weather conditions.Madeleine Seale (eLife Sciences Publications, Ltd)
