It's finally time. After years of deliberation, #Minetest is finally ready to adopt a new identity and prove it has moved beyond its original purpose. We can finally move past the "mining" and the "testing" and focus on making this platform the best it can be.

They need to start charging, it's as simple as that, and #freesoftware licences allow that. #Ardour and #grsecurity do that, for example.

very important episode!

as the resident "zealot", let me say, that objectively, #FreeSoftware is a better term than #OpenSource, with the caveat, that this is true for every language that is not as silly as English, and actually have a distinct word for "free of charge", instead of using the same word as for liberty.

Sad news: The Living Computer Museum in Seattle won't reopen and the collection, including the historic PDP-10, pivotal to the origins of #Emacs and #FreeSoftware, is set to be auctioned. One of their PDP-10, the second to be named AI, still has MIT's "Deactivated Property" sticker prominently displayed on the front panel. What will become of these technological treasures? It's a moment for reflection on how we preserve our digital heritage. https://www.geekwire.com/2024/seattles-living-computers-museum-logs-off-for-good-as-paul-allen-estate-will-auction-vintage-items/ #TechHistory #SoftwareFreedom

I understand Futo's concerns about sustainability of open source developers, but the goal of #FreeSoftware was never to "protect developers", it was always about the protection of users, so it is a bit of a weird thing to expect from the licenses to protect the developers from "misuse" of their code. What they might deem as "misuse", a user might deem "none of your business, it is one of my fundamental computing rights".

Thanks to everyone who already gave input on the topic of #OpenWashing !

As many companies claim to be working on “Open Source” or “Free Software” while distributing proprietary software products, we at the @fsfe would like to learn more about current market practices.

We're interested in your views and experiences on openwashing! You can submit them here:

Please spread the word, any input is welcome!

in my opinion, we should blame it on the BSD / MIT style licenses that require nothing from downstream.

Corporations have access to thousands of libraries at no cost and no restrictions... People in general don't appreciate things that come easy, and tend to be irresponsible towards those things.

Does the added unpaid maintenance burden worth it now, that due to choosing MIT vs GPL, hundreds of proprietary junk use your code? I don't think so.

#FreeSoftware #GPL

Using it everyday to repair borked Windows Installs, data recovery, forensic hardware diagnostics & examination.

Combine with that a very long conversation with Microsoft on the impossibility to customize the desktop experience for dedicated purposes (again someday I will tell that story) led directly to a career in embedded Linux and a lifelong Desktop #Linux supporter.

PSA to everyone to not use brave browser @brave@mastodon.social, the CEO of Brave Software is bigoted (donated to anti-lgbtqia+ organizations trying to ban gay marriage in the past and still has never addressed it or apologized) and was also against the Covid Lockdowns and is anti-vax. Using brave browser contributes to oppression of LGBTQIA+ ppl and contributes to brave software financially through ads and other means.

I recommend anyone still using brave browser to switch to ungoogled-chromium as a non-bigoted degoogled chromium-based browser alternative. @floccus@fosstodon.org is a good browser extension to use on ungoogled-chromium to sync your bookmarks.

It's #FreeSoftware Day and we sat down with Matthias Kirschner (@kirschner) from FSFE (@fsfe) to talk about his children's book "Ada & Zangemann - A Tale of Software, Skateboards, and Raspberry Ice Cream" Learn more about how a young girl is taking on big tech in our interview: https://blog.torproject.org/i-love-free-software-day-interview-fsfe/ 💜💜

Vim, Neovim, Emacs, and everything free software that can be compiled against whatever the distro maintainers put their minds to, keep winning.

Yet another reason we call the offending software "proprietary garbage".

#FreeSoftware #Linux

Unfortunately, it never gets too repetitive to remember: this #Vivaldi browser is **not** #FreeSoftware ( #FreeAsInFreedom for users), nor even #OpenSource (a more practical technical approach), and claiming this program is such a good thing, literally under a "It's FOSS" title, does not help uninformed users understand possible consequences, even with a simple warning line at the end. There are plenty of #FOSS browsers to write about, many of which deserve much more praise.

then we are back to square one, software companies have no problem exploiting their users, as long as their users don't care, and the FSF can't make the users care, because then "what about muh games".

The users don't do anything to force the devs to make free software, because if they took a stance that would mean no more playing with non-free software.

this is the circle of not giving a f*ck.

We're now in feature freeze for #Minetest 5.8! This is a period of time before a release where we only do bug fixes

Highlights:

* Minetest no longer ships with a default game
* A redesigned Settings GUI
* Improved Android controls, can place nodes with single tap
* Improved antialiasing filters

I'll keep saying it, because it keeps coming up. If you're working in the FreeDesktop, Linux, or Flatpak spaces, you *need* to understand this, even if you don't personally care about gaming or Steam Deck.

it's funny how people don't understand that operating systems (just like all other software projects or products) are named by the devs as whatever they want. It's branding and trademarks.

the "Manjaro is not Arch Linux" is the same argument. Manjaro is whatever its devs call Manjro, Arch Linux is whatever its devs call "Arch Linux".

very good write up by the @conservancy and great commentary from Brodie as always.

I believe what #RedHat is doing is not against the #GPL or #FreeSoftware. For me, what's more concerning is their communication in which they position themselves as "fully committed to open source", while constantly egging on one of the four pillars of software freedom.

What can the #Wikimedia movement learn from #FOSDEM?

1. How to welcome a huge flood of offline and online participants for free and without asking or collecting any personal data
2. How to organize an event exclusively with #FreeSoftware

If the way to make Linux popular is to make it nothing like Linux, then most current Linux users will just move to BSD, as the joke goes.

I run Linux because it is the easiest way to run a mostly #FreeSoftware OS, I use Arch because it gives me a feeling of true control over my computing experience, I run DWM because I love how barebones it is, and it only does what I want it to do.

If the only way to make more people use Linux is to make it Windows, than please don't.

@ntnsndr @efoundation /e/ foundation prioritizes ease of use over #FreeSoftware, they are more about being #Google-free. If you want human-reviewed Free Software, then stick with f-droid.org as your only app source. The official #FDroid client provides free software, as easy as possible.

I am a big advocate for #FreeSoftware as really the ONLY way for consumer protection in terms of the software we use.

I would never tell someone to not use Adobe for work on their work computer. My workplace needs me to use Windows and many proprietary software on my day job.

That is a very different think than your personal computer at home. And I think many who use Adobe stuff for hobbies could probably switch to freedom-respecting software and still do everything they want to.

Chromebooks foisted on students? Teachers monitoring what children do outside of the classroom via nonfree software? Surveillance of children is common, and it's at your child's school, too. Support #FreeSoftware https://u.fsf.org/32h

I think the sole purpose of the FSF is to remind us every single time when an infraction on our software freedoms occur.

What do people expect from them? To go around and tell people how they can marginally improve their computing freedoms if they give up a few conveniences? They aren't the "Computing Compromises Advocacy Group" after all.

In our lives we need to go for compromises, but there must be some entity, that keeps up the torch for extreme purity.

I'm quite thankful for the treehouse.systems devs such as @ariadne @kouhai and @fox for continued development of their Mastodon fork. Without that work, this server would be wildly different.
