500,000 Taxa on iNaturalist! inaturalist.org/blog/103155-50…

"that’s 23% of all known species on Earth... #Birds stand out: nearly all species have been observed on #iNaturalist. 349 species (2%) are yet to be recorded... For #reptiles, #amphibians, & #mammals there are about 10x as many unobserved... Like birds, most unobserved species only remain in tropical regions. This is not the case for #fish, #plants, #invertebrates, & #fungi where there are still many left to observe in all parts of the globe"

Off Ecuador's Galapagos, a former #shark-#poaching ship's new mission phys.org/news/2024-07-ecuador-…

When #Ecuador's navy seized a Chinese-flagged ship off the #Galapagos in 2017, its hold brimmed with tons and tons of poached #fish including hammerhead and thresher #sharks. Today, the vessel has been repurposed for environmental patrols of those same waters, helping to hunt down predatory vessels of the kind it once was. It has also been renamed #Hualcopo for an Indigenous leader of centuries ago.

The media frenzy about shark bites is always over the top, given the very low risk, but this is a new one: the headline simply says "shark spotted near swimmers at Florida beach." In other words, the shark was swimming at home, bothering exactly no one. news.sky.com/video/shark-spott… #sharks #fish #animals #animalwelfare #animalrights

Hoping to see some new #science folks exploring Mastodon so figured it’s time for another #introduction - I’m Mya, a professor at the University of South Florida College of Marine Science. Our lab studies #microbes (bacteria, viruses, protists) in the oceans and other environments and also works on #fish egg identification. I also post about my cute dog and cat a lot! #USFCMS #ocean #marine #oceanography #microbiology #virology #research #seagrass #urchin #academia

Excited to share our new paper - Evaluation of DNA metabarcoding for identifying #fish eggs: a case study on the West #Florida Shelf - published today in PeerJ

Friday nights are slack food nights, so tonight it was cheesy potatoes with shallots and bacon, and crumbed fish fillets (because I like the irony of an atheist eating fish on fridays).
