- While ports offer plug in for electricity, most ships don't use this. They opt to ships idle their diesel engines for nine to 11 hours while passengers visit land.
- Each passenger produces a daily average of 30 liters of sewage. For a ship carrying 3,600 people, that amounts to about 400 eight-person hot tubs worth of sewage and over 3,000 hot tubs worth of gray water each day. It all has big food companies rushing to show progress in cutting emissions, particularly after so many of them promised to zero out their net release of greenhouse gases — known as going “carbon neutral” — by 2050 or earlier, in alignment with the Paris agreement on global warming. In the backdrop is a contentious debate over how those companies should calculate their carbon footprints.

The fight has shifted to an obscure independent organization called the GHG Protocol, a group made up of corporations, scientists and environmental groups that writes accounting rules for greenhouse gas emissions that will guide what climate claims companies can make under new state laws.

Among the companies involved in determining when and how farming and harvesting methods can be used to erase the emissions impact of products like hamburgers and dairy are McDonald’s, Nestlé and the Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef, to which meat giants Tyson Foods and Cargill belong.

The deliberations of the GHG Protocol, which is managed by the World Resources Institute and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, are kept confidential. But discord spilled into public in the fall, following its publication of draft guidelines for farm and forestry emissions. Dozens of environmental groups and academics say the rules as proposed would allow companies to declare climate-unfriendly products such as lumber, paper, beef and milk carbon neutral — or even carbon negative — by making modest land use adjustments that don’t truly mitigate the emissions of those products.

Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg called the outcome of the 28th United Change Climate Conference a "betrayal and a stab in the back."

Thunberg said: "The final outcome of COP28 is not a 'historic win'. It is yet another example of extremely vague and watered-down texts full of loopholes that in no way is even close to being sufficient for staying within the 1.5°C limit and ensuring climate justice."

Speaking to Reuters at a protest outside the Swedish parliament, Thunberg said the agreement was the "bare minimum" and rejected the idea that it was a "first step."

"We've already had first steps and they haven't led us anywhere," Thunberg added. "The emissions are still increasing. We are experiencing record highs."

She also questioned the validity of U.N. climate negotiations.

"This COP has once again proven that the COP processes are not working in our favor," she told Reuters. "They are not designed to solve the climate crisis. They are working as an alibi for world leaders" to hide behind their signature on a document while continuing to do nothing.

"We need drastic, immediate emission cuts," said Thunberg, "and binding commitments from the largest contributors of the climate crisis to finance loss and damages adaptation and a just transition in the most affected areas."
