Footage shows NY officers beating prisoner before death
Newly released bodycam footage appears to show New York corrections officers fatally beating a handcuffed inmate who died the following morning. The inmate, 43-year-old Robert Brooks, was pronounced dead on 10 December, the day after the incident took place at the Marcy Correctional Facility in upstate New York.Following an internal review, New York Governor Kathy Hochul ordered the firing of the 13 officers and a prison nurse who were involved in the assault. The office of New York Attorney General Letitia James has opened an investigation into Brooks' death, and the union that represents state prison workers called the video "incomprehensible".

FBI informant who lied about Biden 'bribes' pleads guilty
A former informant has pleaded guilty to lying to the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) about a fake bribery scheme involving President Joe Biden and his son Hunter.Alexander Smirnov, 44, also admitted tax evasion after not reporting more than $2m (£1.58m) in income.
His claims became the basis of an impeachment investigation in Congress which centred around the false claims that the Bidens made millions in bribes from Burisma, a Ukrainian energy company.
But Smirnov admitted he made the story up, and pleaded guilty in Los Angeles on Monday as part of an agreement with prosecutors.

Subsidiaries of Indonesia’s second-biggest palm oil company, PT Astra Agro Lestari (AAL), are running illegal plantations, grabbing community land, and intimidating critics, according to a new report by NGOs.
The report is a follow-up to a 2022 report by Friends of the Earth, and identifies at least 1,100 hectares(2,718 acres) of concessions that lie inside forest areas that should be off-limits to plantation activity.

Japan declares victory in 'war' on floppy disks
It's taken until 2024, but Japan has finally said goodbye to floppy disks.
Up until last month, people were still asked to submit documents to the government using the outdated storage devices, with more than 1,000 regulations requiring their use.
It Took Until Now For This Change
Now they still have to deal with their national business obsession with Fax Machines. And Many Japan businesses still require official documents to be endorsed using carved personal stamps called hanko, despite the government's efforts to phase them out.

Microsoft’s latest Windows security updates might break your VPN
There’s no proper fix until Microsoft pushes a patched update. However, you can work around the issue by uninstalling all the security updates. In an unfortunate bit of timing for CEO Satya Nadella, he said last week that he wants Microsoft to put “security above else.” I can’t imagine making customers (temporarily) choose between going without a VPN and losing the latest protection is what he had in mind.

Converting rainforest to plantation impacts food webs and biodiversity
Every day, new areas of rainforests are converted into plantations, drastically changing tropical biodiversity and the way the ecosystem functions.ScienceDaily
As oil palm plantations encroach on rainforests, wild primates increasingly enter them to forage, where they face the threat of being eaten by feral dogs, killed for raiding crops, or caught by traffickers for the pet trade.
A new study from Peninsular Malaysia finds that exposure to oil plantations also significantly increases the risk of death among infant southern pig-tailed macaques.

Chevron v. National Resources Defense Council (1984) May Get Overturned
Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo and Relentless v. Department of Commerce seek to overturn Chevron, a foundational decision, which places strict limits on unelected federal judges’ ability to make policy decisions for the entire nation. Chevron has been cited by 17,000 lower court decisions, and it would cause a “flood of litigation” that would result if all of these decisions were called into question.
