There are meany subcultures on #mastodon that have the idea that they are the ONLY subculture and everything they think is the big story of #fedivers culture. This is bad behaver and obviously not true.
What we do have in common is #4opens and a history of #openweb netticate. The rest is a point of view, valid for its group, but not the "big" story.
Good for #mainstreaming people to understand this healthy, but messy #open culture we have here.
The current lack of grounded thinking about BLOCKING and control is such an ant-social process, when we start to think about groups and trust this can take us back to the more “native” #openweb path.
Replying to all the random individuals that seem to think that I’m “endorsing” one of the Fediverse products over any other, and seem to be making a big deal over #akkoma vs #mastodon etc.
That’s not the case. I’m actually a horrible MIS person, and I would never want to maintain my own server. I’m a programmer for chrissake!
The same way you should fear me if I hold a soldering iron, you should be very very nervous if I were to do any server management.
So all credit (or blame) for the choice of Fediverse platform goes to @monsieuricon, who maintains kernel.org and just made it really easy for me to try this out.

For many, many years this blog was a complicated, outdated and slow Wordpress instance. It became a constant bad thought: “You really need to update/fix/speed up that thing”. A while ago I did just that.

For example on this thread https://libranet.de/display/0b6b25a8-1163-e510-d442-32c014292555 the original post was sent to 103 remote servers, my friend digit@iviv.hu commented on it. My response to his comment was sent to 24 servers, but my response to my own comment was sent to 105 servers. I suspect him being on Diaspora* and most of my contacts being on platforms like #Mastodon than only support #ActivityPub has an influence here.

Noticed that the way #Mastodon sanitizes HTML coming from other instances flattens out block quotes in addition to removing other #formatting.

After almost three months and until the move to social.heise, I managed the Mastodon-account of @heiseonline@social.heise.de (on mastodon.social) and published more than 1600 posts there, it is now largely automatic. Time for some insights and a few things I learned. Maybe some english-speaking accounts are interested as well? @spencerdailey@journa.host for example..

You simply can't see who comes to a page via Mastodon. That's why I only shared links with a URL parameter that can be used to see that (of course not traceable to individuals). This showed exciting things: Already since November, the shared articles received almost as many visits via the Mastodon-account alone as via Twitter in total. This suggests that the numbers are comparable, although the Mastodon account has grown from 500 to around 40,000 followers in this period. On Twitter, @heiseonline@social.heise.de is followed by over 240,000 accounts. To be honest, #Twitter simply doesn't bring in many visits - contrary to what #ElonMusk, for example, seems to assume. We're talking about a few percent here.
I'll add a chart to prove this: Light blue are the entries via Twitter in total (!) and purple those exclusively (!) via the Mastodon-account to the articles shared there. The gap is not large. Both curves are rising slightly because more and more articles per day have landed on Mastodon. On Twitter, of course, many more articles were shared automatically from the official account in the beginning, but since a few days the number of shared posts is identical.
The engagement is also very revealing: While there was only one tweet from @heiseonline@social.heise.de in this (admittedly still quite young) year that was shared more than 50 times, the Mastodon account comes to over 30 posts with more than 50 boosts each. An impressive example in the screenshots attached and that was neither about Mastodon nor Twitter 😉 If you can still trust Twitter's search, only four tweets from #heiseonline were commented at least 10 times this year, at @heiseonline@social.heise.de there are much more comments.
The practice of re-sharing posts that have already been shared has been criticized from time to time. Because there are no #algorithms on Mastodon that resurface older posts, they are lost from view much more quickly. The fact that re-shared posts still attract interest has been seen in the numbers, sometimes "re-boosting" brought as many visits as the original post. If you don't want that, you can "Hide shared posts" on the profile page.
Because there is no search worthy of its name on #Mastodon, hashtags are really important. From the start, I have therefore tried to assign several per post, including #News (if it is a "news"). The results can't be measured, of course.
The @EU_Commission has 71k followers on #mastodon. They have 1.7 million followers on Twitter.
The same post got: 363 boosts on Mastodon 110 retweets on Twitter
So the same message got 3 times as many engagements on the #openweb
We really need to celebrate that a group of grassroots #4opens activists got the #EU to use #fediverse #openweb apps. This shows where the value comes from, good to link to this thanks

On #Twitter, I loved the common practice of writing threads explaining new #preprints and #papers in an understandable way. I uttered my concern that through the chronological timeline here people might miss interesting science. A solution would be to agree on names for hashtags and/or a.gup.pe groups to ease tracking these "paper threads".

Finally added to the homepage! Would have gone much more quickly if #Mastodon was one of the icons offered in the "social media links" tool. Hand to artisanally hand-craft a row of icons like it's 2003 or something.
We choose the content & what to highlight & celebrate. On #Twitter & other platforms, we became used to posting & expecting the most infuriating/outrageous/triggering news. It became sport & spectacle & promoted narcissism.
We have an opportunity to actively share in other ways here. Curate curiosity. Build on each other’s ideas.
@Gargron & team have given us a chance to do things differently. So far, I’m optimistic.
