A good read. Key bit:
"Obviously, the social networking space is undergoing a major shakeup. Twitter under Elon Musk’s chaotic reign has seemingly created an opportunity for an alternative microblogging service. With #Threads and #Mastodon both embracing #ActivityPub, it might not be one platform that wins out—but an open standard. "

Here's how to #FediBlock your entire server from threads.net (edit: as well as threads.instagram.com, a subdomain of Instagram) on #Mastodon 4.1.0 and above (I'm unsure about how to do this on other #Fediverse #servers, sorry:
FOR MODS AND ADMINS:
1. On Mastodon, go to Preferences > Moderation > Federation.
2. Click "Add new domain block".
3. Type "threads.net" (no quotes).
4. Set severity to "Suspend".
5. Click "Create block".

We, the moderation and administration of tech.lgbt, are signing the Anti-Meta Fedi Pact in fellowship with our peer communities. (vantaa.black/pact)
There is over a decade of precedent that Facebook will not have users' best interests as their guiding principle but rather profit margins, if it joins the Fediverse.
We at tech.lgbt have long held the belief that corporation owned instances are a threat to the core of the Fediverse: freedom for users to be themselves and to be a part of their communities. The 2010s saw the loss of online freedom when the majority of the Web was consolidated into a few destinations, and Facebook entering here could lead us back to centralization. Furthermore, NDAs for server admins will constrain our sovereignty online by binding us legally from disrupting their business.
We are not products. We are people, and we do not welcome Facebook in this space.

A group of over 40 European organisations have recently released a statement calling for the EU to set up a European Public Digital Infrastructure Fund.
They call for this fund to support Digital Public Spaces, that are, among other things, based in FOSS, and ensure privacy by design. The statement gives three examples: #Mastodon, #PeerTube and #ActivityPub, stating that they would benefit from such a fund to further flourish.

Fediverse And Mastodon Aren't Doomed But...

I don’t own chickens. Or any birds for that matter. And even if I did, I probably wouldn’t dress them up as adorable feathered crossing guards.
But sometimes the algorithms for targeted ads on #SocialMedia are so very wrong, they’re simply delightful.
Still, I’m very happy they’re not part of #Mastodon.
Before I leave for my honeymoon I wanted to share what we've been up to at #Mastodon. Here's a new Patreon update!
ach so und selbst auf #Mastodon erkennt man am Screenshot das es #Friendica ist ... dafür ist das Logo Rechts in der oberen Ecke
The only two design choices available aren’t “funnel everyone to mastodon.social” or “present a list of thousands of servers.” The default button could automatically round-robin a large list of servers that are known to be run by good actors. This is a solved problem. The solution is not being used, in this case, because, clearly, mastodon.social does want to grow.

@Each Hit Music @Chris Trottier I've started working on a series of comparison tables for the Join the Fediverse Wiki that currently compares the features of
I may add at least #Socialhome and #FoundKey.
I don't know if I'll ever complete and publish these tables, but it won't be anytime soon because it'll be a whole lot of features in these tables. Also, I'll very likely need help from users of other projects to complete the tables.
We need responsible people to STOP pushing only #Mastodon as this is not helping, just look at the SPAM currently spewing from this process. With this mess we are building a codebase and an instance that are "too big to fail" this is absurdly stupid and not needed.
Please link and talk about the #openweb or the #fediverse to start to compost the mess you are making, thanks.
What #mastodon is doing now is going to lead to a lot of mess, due to people squabbling.

Good not to get confused about this part, it is the king and his en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Favourit… that are pushing this mess
A place to talk about spreadmastodon.org and wider issues that this brings up
What #mastodon is doing now is going to lead to a lot of mess, duo to people squabbling. This might or might not be a level of mess that negates the vertical move to “simplicity” of a single codebase and a single instance.SocialHub

the development of #mastodon has been captured by the #NGO crew for a while now - this is a normal outcome of a good #openweb project going #mainstreaming
The solution to this normal issue is to shift focus to new potential outreach project to balance this shift.
Attacking and PUSHING back HARD at this change has limited and often negative effects.
Do better, only complaining is #BLOCKING
With the #feudalism of #FOSS and #opensurce development, we face the issue of en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Favourit… with a project that goes #mainstreaming like #mastodon is currently.
This is a fundamental "democratic" problem that we don't have a solution for.

Running tootctl accounts cull on 400k accounts takes around 8 hours.
Remove remote accounts that no longer exist. Queries every single remote account in the database to determine if it still exists on the origin server, and if it doesn’t, then remove it from the database. Accounts that have had confirmed activity within the last week are excluded from the checks, in case the server is just down.

There it is: Germany's second big public broadcaster is teasing, that it will start posting on #Mastodon tomorrow as @ZDF That account has 3200 follower, on #Twitter its 1,4 million.
I'm sure it will start to grow quickly and get a headstart on the other big public broadcaster #ARD, which has labeled its first account a test (@NDR).
Of course it would also be a headstart on the big public broadcasters, that are arguing with #Twitter.
