For this weekend's coding project, I built a tiny single-user Bluesky→ActivityPub one-way bridge I named “Pinhole”. If there's someone on Bluesky whose posts you want in your Mastodon feed, you can download and run it yourself: :fietkau_software: https://fietkau.software/pinhole

Caveats: 1. I intentionally built it anti-scalable: you can use it to follow one Bluesky account from one fedi account, and that's it. 2. You need experience with web servers.

Does anybody have any news on https://pubkit.net/ ?

I would really needs those applications to developer my #activitypub #rustlang server...

friendica VPS setup on ubuntu 22.04 LTS

@Friendica Support

Hi,
I'm working on my first #friendica #VPS installation, here you'll find my initial post about general thoughts like what distro to use, size and costs.
I'm using the tutorial "creating a friendica server - ubuntu" by @Hank G ☑️.

As of now I'm doing well in the process and want to start this post to document differences and questions while installing the server.

This server is going to host an already existing friendica node I have to move from another hosting provider. That means that for example the DB doesn't have to be created from scratch but moved and other smaller details.

I will try to address the different steps of installation in answers to this post and appreciate help, ideas and observations.

I'm doing this from a #linux desktop environment from the console but there shouldn't be differences if you want to do this from a #windows machine.

In #ActivityPub "governance" at the moment people are mostly #dogmatic #NGO crew, some are #mainstreaming careerism, others are doing #geekproblem #grassroots careerism.

Neither of these are real friends of any alternatives, they are friendly enemies ;)

I started a FEP to define an #OAuth 2.0 profile for the #ActivityPub API (“c2s”):

https://codeberg.org/fediverse/fep/pulls/162

I’d appreciate any feedback or support. I’ve begun implementing this profile, and I think it’s testing out pretty well.

are there "best practice" PHP Versions?

@ch0ccyra1n it does support #ActivityPub though. And #SocialHub is among early testers of the #Discourse AP plugin: https://socialhub.activitypub.rocks/t/adding-federation-support-to-discourse/2966

Today's question for a resilient #Fediverse is whether various different initiatives are willing to collaborate and cross-pollinate, while keeping their independence.

There's great opportunity to increase the cohesion of the #GrassrootsFedi #ActivityPub developer community and creating strong joins:

1. @w3c #SocialCG working on #OpenStandards improvements

2. @fedidevs documenting existing fedi

3. #FEP process on @Codeberg

4. #SocialHub as forum

5. @dansup #FediDB

Several years in the making, GitLab is now very actively implementing #ActivityPub! 🙌

https://gitlab.com/groups/gitlab-org/-/epics/11247

The end-goal is to support AP for merge requests (aka pull requests), meaning git.alice.dev can send a merge request to gitlab.com/Bob/project.git

First bite-sized todo on the implementation path there is ‘subscribe to project releases’.

Smart move by #GitLab; through ActivityPub they’re getting a distributed version of GitHub’s social layer.

Japan Earthquake Alert App (1.9 million followers) Says Sayonara to X

"[..]We have decided that if we were to spend over ¥700,000 per month that it would be better if this money could go to developing our NERV app and strengthening our ActivityPub servers instead of X’s API. Therefore, we are beginning to cut down on our posts on X."

Whoa! BBC has set up their own instance (http://social.bbc) in #fediverse / #mastodon ! 😲👏

https://www.bbc.co.uk/rd/blog/2023-07-mastodon-distributed-decentralised-fediverse-activitypub

It is such a no-brainer for media, academic & govt orgs to own their identity AND platform on social media. Nothing really beats "user@domain".

#activitypub

Here's my offer:

I will provide free managed hosting to any Indian media org (or any other type of institution) who wants to set up their own fediverse instance, like BBC did.

Please spread the word! 🙏

#ActivityPub app developers take note..

A #Fediverse Enhancement Proposal has reached FINAL status:

FEP-f1d5: NodeInfo in Fediverse Software

" #NodeInfo is a #protocol intended to standardize upon a way to provide server-level metadata to the public. This enables tools and clients to utilize this metadata to assess server health or facilitate end-users choices about servers and software to use on the Fediverse."

https://codeberg.org/fediverse/fep/src/branch/main/feps/fep-f1d5.md

So exciting! Please consider mirroring these talks on #peertube as @penpot did with their latest #penpotfest @penpot_app

What better way to promote #decentralized platforms and #foss #floss alternatives, it seems like a perfect fit😀

A good read. Key bit:

"Obviously, the social networking space is undergoing a major shakeup. Twitter under Elon Musk’s chaotic reign has seemingly created an opportunity for an alternative microblogging service. With #Threads and #Mastodon both embracing #ActivityPub, it might not be one platform that wins out—but an open standard. "

I’ll share an early version of #Memory with you guys. Really excited to one day share it with everyone and be a part of #fediverse the future is very bright with so many projects and things being worked on, happy to be a small part of that #activitypub

Last thought on #EEE: We need to support our standards makers STAT. The best defense against "extend" is a clear line of what we are defending.

#ActivityPub has needed a robust "test suite" to test compliance for a while & good efforts were unfinished. They need to be picked up at warp speed. To see an example of his working for other tech see: https://webmention.rocks/

The creator of the Wordpress ActivtyPub plugin said that he *wished* he had this.
More on why in my last post next.

Hi @evan @cwebber@pfefferle
Timely question: Does anyone know the status of a formal or informal building out an #ActivtyPub test suite, akin to the one used to test http://webmention.rocks but for Acitivity pub.

I know the activitypub.rocks effort ended & I see this one that seemed to evolve from that but has been derelict for a while.

Is there any other effort active?

A group of over 40 European organisations have recently released a statement calling for the EU to set up a European Public Digital Infrastructure Fund.

They call for this fund to support Digital Public Spaces, that are, among other things, based in FOSS, and ensure privacy by design. The statement gives three examples: #Mastodon, #PeerTube and #ActivityPub, stating that they would benefit from such a fund to further flourish.

Entire statement: https://shared-digital.eu/statement/

RE: ActivityPub Plugin for WordPress: let's assume I would work on a feature that would allow you to follow a complete blog, what would be the best identifier for that account? `@feed@example.org`? `@blog@example.com`?
What are your ideas?

#Barcelona, #Meta's Twitter competitor, will be ready by summer.

And lest you believe #ActivityPub integration was just some rumour, think again. In a slide, Meta confirms that Barcelona will indeed be decentralized and will be compatible with Mastodon.

Everyone who thought that AT protocol would easily win over ActivityPub, and that #Bluesky would kill Mastodon just because a few influencers joined doesn't understand the sheer marketing power and pull that Meta has at its disposal.

But believe me, I'm not exactly cheering on Meta here. Generally, where Meta goes, shenanigans happen. I simply don't think Meta is capable of releasing a product without dark patterns.

Nevertheless, I don't think the Fediverse is even close to preparing for what will happen once Barcelona starts federating.

We should all be taking Barcelona very seriously.

With pandemic-related things calming down a bit, and especially with the surge in fediverse use over the last 6 months, it seems like a good time to regroup. Would anyone be interested in attending an online fediverse conference, or helping to organise one?

https://socialhub.activitypub.rocks/t/anyone-keen-on-a-fediverse-conference-in-2023-24/3167

#fediverse #ActivityPub #conference

For those who didn't know (or have forgotten), there's a PeerTube channel here with videos of the talks and Q&A sessions from the #ActivityPub conference we had in late 2020:
https://conf.tube/c/apconf_channel/videos

Picking through these videos is a great way to get a sense of where some of us wanted fediverse development to go, both technically and politically.

WordPress.org is counting 3.000 installations of the #ActivityPub Plugin so far 🎉

https://wordpress.org/plugins/activitypub/

We need to see #ActivityPub as, by definition, the app/activity protocol that subsumes all the other app/activity protocols.

That's exactly the approach the e.g. TCP/IP standards bodies chose and it quietly worked, the telcos and IBM were unseated.

Technically the #ActivityPub allows to make hidden hashtags, not visible in the body of text. It could be ideal. Then it would be up to the client to show them as a list at the end or not to show them.

@Gargron
Eugen, please stop #hellthreading yourself, please?!

It's a total pain trying to hunt down your #serialized publishings all over the place in chronological order and in #context when you do that.

Just put your thought into #one_single_post like everyone else or wait until you're sure you've finished what you have to say before clicking on the #publish button, okay? Pretty please?

#tallship #Fediverse #ActivityPub #comprehension #netiquette

.

@peepstein
Really Eugen?

Your interview with Time Magazine notwithstanding?

That was IMO, a grave error on your part - conflating mastodon with #Fediverse and without one single utterance of the word "Fediverse" throughout.

It served to cause much of this confusion on the part of n00bs and as a result, now jeopardizes your trademark.

Fact: There's no such thing as a mastodon network. Only the #ActivityPub powered Fediverse

.

The #OGB project came out of a thread https://socialhub.activitypub.rocks/t/what-would-a-fediverse-governance-body-look-like/1497/152
# that itself came out of the outreaching #activitypub to the #EU, which a group of people organized.

Would you like to see support for a specific library, developer tool or any other critical open source component?

Yep.
The thing you announced this through: #ActivityPub and the #Fediverse 😀

The Fediverse is probably the most critical infrastructure to save democracy.
ActivityPub is the world’s leading federated social web standard.
A large community had given their last shirts to make it happen. It feels like a locomotive which is pulled by sewing thread.

@bengo

Just a clarification question re.
https://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-swicg/2023Mar/

What does “signed claims” mean exactly?
We are on the way to federate #wiki and use
https://www.w3.org/TR/activitystreams-vocabulary/#connections
(its own section) and think that
things like https://codeberg.org/fediverse/fep/src/branch/main/feps/fep-c390.md could help

Currently it is signed traditional by instance which syncs with wikidata, OSM etc.
