Thursday 14th August-Friday 15th August:
I will present a living #art installation as part of my work with Síolta Glasa in Limerick, Ireland. The work is about the entangled climate impact of clothing, technology and industry.
I will set up a stall in Arthur's Quay Shopping Centre, where I will invite passers by to contribute words or drawings to a 'string figure' artwork based on Limerick Lace, a historical industry in the city.

“Minimum Wage Machine”
“The minimum wage machine allows anybody to work for minimum wage. For as long as they turn the crank, the user is paid in pennies as time passes. For example, if minimum wage is $7.25/hour (the current US Federal rate), then the worker is paid one penny every 4.97 seconds. If they stop turning the crank, they stop receiving money. The machine's mechanism and electronics are powered by the hand crank, and pennies are stored in a plexiglas box. The MWM is reprogrammed as minimum wage changes, or for wages in different locations.”

I'm back at the Kielderhead Wildwood, five years on from when I first started working with them as artist in residence through VARC (Northumberland UK).
Five years ago, all that was on site was a lot of low-lying brush and thousands of trees in deer-guards.

Next week I return to the Kielderhead Wildwood, where I worked as an artist five years ago.
The wildwood is a large area at the Scottish-English border where 39,000 native trees were planted by the local community from 2017-2022, to make a future landscape where there once was once commercial forestry. I made work about the interconnections between humans, trees, fungi and technologies.

Potter collected & examined beetles, butterflies, plants, bird eggs, shells, rocks, fossils & especially fungi. She conducted experiments & wrote a scientific paper with her own illustrations, presented at the Linnean Society of London. However, as a woman in the Victorian era, she couldn’t even attend the meeting.#history #art #books

I've just published a new page on my website documenting the last 3 months on an art residency exploring fire through the plant aiteann (gorse) and its relationship to sitka spruce: shanefinan.org/VAP/15_aiteann.…
This was part of the international research project investigating wildfires called FIRECULT. For the project, I created charcoal and made new drawings, made work with fire, and created two new video artworks.

The relationship between the two plants and fire is also very interesting. Their loose 'self seeded' plants grow all over the Irish countryside and often grown next to one another. Wildfires spread from aiteann (gorse) and heather onto sitka spruce forestry quite easily, making it a big issue for fire management.
With climate change, drier weeks and warmer summers mean wildfires become a bigger risk. And here we have two crops that have become weeds, spreading wild and burning together.

Thinking about aiteannn (gorse) as historically a cash crop changed the way I perceived it as a cultural and heritage object.
It made me start to wonder if some day a cash crop like sitka spruce will be a cultural or heritage object in Ireland, with myth and tradition associated with the plant.
So I started creating a cultural heritage, drawing sitka spruce with charcoal made from sitka spruce branches.
