It was a nice stop to be alone for a little while. A freshwater spring bubbles up right by the beach. #hawaii #nature

Walking through the Kīlauea Caldera. The plume blocked some of the sun, which was fortunate as otherwise all the black rock would have definitely made it a bit unpleasantly hot... #hawaii #nature

Kicksledding through a quiet forest today. The only sound I heard was from a softly hammering woodpecker.

An image from some of Scotland's most remote mountains. It's no small feat to get out here, but it's worth it every time.

Made last year when me and Benjamin Maze took a group of awesome clients hiking and wild camping here; we were treated to all manner of brilliant conditions from hail to blue skies. (Join us in September 2026 for the second iteration of our Northwest Highlands photography adventure!)

The waterfall at 'Akaka Falls State Park. It's not ginormous (about 135m), but the perspective of being reasonably close to level with the *start* of the falls is a nice one. #hawaii #nature

Last week we got to go to Hawai'i very economically, and arrived to find that Kīlauea had started erupting. I'd never been to Hawai'i nor seen a volcano doing its thing, so that was a pretty good way to start. #hawaii #nature

The sun coming in while we were foraging for tasty things and looking at very non-tasty fungus. The ground here was so spongy – layers and layers of tree-fall and moss. #california #nature

We'd found a little cabin on the north coast in which to stay that looks out over this rock, which really really looks to me like someone sitting up in the bath. Seeing how the light hits "them" throughout the day was a lot of fun. #california #nature

Pokin' around the forest. The sun coming in felt so clear and nice. #california #nature

...and while I'm at it, some little sea-things, too! The sea was much more calm than last year, although when we'd gone crabbing the tides were quite powerful. #california #nature

Just some little woodsy things from the north coast. One of the reasons I like that area so much is just how much growth there is everywhere – fungus popping out of everything, trees growing improbably, little happy bugs and such (and, conversely, how hard it was to keep my walls mold-free when I lived there). A nice change from the Central Valley sometimes. #california #nature

Winter's morning sun creeping through the forest. The trees are very quiet this time of year, but the mist and light made little walks very rewarding. #california #nature

Boopin' around the beach in Trinidad (not that one). We'd been looking for some mussels to try preparing. They were alright; crabbing is preferable, personally. #california #nature

A little wander through Fern Canyon. The water got a bit high in places, but it was still ferny and canyonesque! #california #nature

I'm slowly starting to share more images from my multi-year project "This Land Remembers", an odyssey into the last remaining ancient native woodlands of Scotland (like this one from a brilliant Autumn morning in 2025). I also have an upcoming exhibition at Gallery Photiq this April/May featuring 12 prints from the project, including this image.

I am fascinated by these colors. Among the yellow lichen Polycaulonia polycarpa and gray-green lichen Physcia dubia probably, you can see the tiny pink fungus Illosporiopsis christiansenii, which parasitizes the lichen. I photographed all this on a blackthorn tree (Prunus spinosa) while tasting the blue fruits, which were now frozen and therefore sweet.

Threats to conservation from artificial-intelligence-generated wildlife images and videos

"Three distinctive characteristics of contemporary society can exacerbate this issue: the pervasive use of social media, anthropomorphizing of animal behavior, and disconnection from nature."

Samhain [sow-wen]: the ancient Celtic festival that marks the end of summer and the beginning of winter — the moment when Beira the Cailleach, Queen of Winter, regains control over the landscape from the Queen of Summer, Brigid. It also marks the moment when the veil between the living and the dead is at its thinnest and the origins of Halloween. Mountain spirits come to the fore at this time of year.

Hidden inside every growing hypha lies a microscopic powerhouse — the #Spitzenkörper.
It’s not just a blob at the fungal tip — it’s the traffic controller, architect, and GPS of fungal growth. 🍄
