Please boost/repost for reach!
I’ve come across some cool #Fediverse projects. I personally would love to know what else is out there but I imagine many of you would as well.
Please share any #Fedi projects that you are working on and or know of.
I’ve seen an #Etsy like project, #Pinterest alternative
#Goldfish which seemed like a #Tiktok like project
I’ve come across awesome client apps like https://statuzer.com/I can’t get enough of #Beanapp for #Lemmy and #Artemisapp for #Kbin

Several years in the making, GitLab is now very actively implementing #ActivityPub! 🙌
https://gitlab.com/groups/gitlab-org/-/epics/11247
The end-goal is to support AP for merge requests (aka pull requests), meaning git.alice.dev can send a merge request to gitlab.com/Bob/project.git
First bite-sized todo on the implementation path there is ‘subscribe to project releases’.
Smart move by #GitLab; through ActivityPub they’re getting a distributed version of GitHub’s social layer.

Dear #fediverse friends,
Stop saying "there's no algorithm here".
"Chronological" *is* an algorithm.
It has pros, and it has cons.
Which means, at the moment I don't have any algorithmic freedom on Mastodon.
To make this post a bit spicier: on Twitter we can choose 2 algorithms, on Bluesky many.
Lack of algorithmic freedom is a feature for some, a bug for others. But let's call it by its name.
Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

I’m keen to facilitate a series of monthly, online meetups about fediverse development.
What we’ll need for each meetup is;
* 3-4 people willing to give a short talk with Q&A. I’d like to have a balance of technical, UX, and organisational topics
* an MC
* a conference server, ideally with support for livestreaming and hosting recordings for later viewing.
Anyone keen to help with this? More details here:

Anyone keen on a fediverse conference in 2023/24
OK, I’m keen to have a go at a series of 3 monthly meetups, maybe starting in about a month? What we’ll need is; 3-4 people willing to give a short presentation, and answer some questions from attendees.SocialHub
I don't think too many people in the Fediverse know of the groundbreaking, but quite accessible research Elinor Ostrom did on the Commons, which eventually won her the Nobel Price.
Commons = a resource shared by a group and that together manages that resource for the good of all.
The #Fediverse is a #Commons, but as it is today it isn't very good about several of the success criteria that #Ostrom identified. E.g. look at the list at the bottom of:
https://www.onthecommons.org/magazine/elinor-ostroms-8-principles-managing-commmons/index.html
Can we do better?
Whoa! BBC has set up their own instance (http://social.bbc) in #fediverse / #mastodon ! 😲👏
https://www.bbc.co.uk/rd/blog/2023-07-mastodon-distributed-decentralised-fediverse-activitypub
It is such a no-brainer for media, academic & govt orgs to own their identity AND platform on social media. Nothing really beats "user@domain".

Here's my offer:
I will provide free managed hosting to any Indian media org (or any other type of institution) who wants to set up their own fediverse instance, like BBC did.
Please spread the word! 🙏
Hi again #Mastodon!
I joined the fediverse when a lot of my community had not migrated from the bird site, so could only partially reconstruct it here using automated tools. If I followed you there and don’t here, say hi and let’s reconnect!

Whatever you do, do not use Soapbox for your #fediverse needs.
The creator and maintainer, Alex Gleason, of Soapbox (or Rebased as it was called) is anti-trans and was previously the head of engineering of the Trump-related social network (Truth Social).
He also worked on Poast, which was a social network for neo-nazis and a direct successor to Kiwi Farms.
Steer clear of it.

New folks on the Mastodon seem to be surprised when, after a day or two, no one has been a gratuitous dick to them. It's one of the beauties of the federated structure that gratuitous dicks get reported to their admins. Servers ban their habitual dicks. Those servers that don't ban their gratuitous dicks get blocked by the rest.
Servers that get blocked off by too many others, lose users to other servers that are still well-connected.
This is the immune system of the Fediverse acting to isolate and exclude bad actors.
For a good example of this in action, did you hear about the time the alt-right social media platform Gab set up a Mastodon instance and was instantly the largest site in the Fediverse? They're not around anymore. The how and why is an interesting story. See here:

FEP-f1d5: NodeInfo in Fediverse Software
" #NodeInfo is a #protocol intended to standardize upon a way to provide server-level metadata to the public. This enables tools and clients to utilize this metadata to assess server health or facilitate end-users choices about servers and software to use on the Fediverse."

Why we think every scholarly organization, but in particular scholarly societies, should not just migrate to #Mastodon, but host their own instances - and what that has to do with the journals many scholarly societies use to generate revenue:

This week, we're highlighting @justinmiller's deep investigation into the #pollution, corruption, and waste surrounding Greg Abbott's ever-growing #border-wall,. This is the cover story to the July/August 2023 magazine issue: https://www.texasobserver.org/abbotts-billion-dollar-barrier/

The #Firefish word #trademark is registered for NICE classes 9, 41, 42, i.e. computer software and services etc., for the whole of the European Union (and I believe for the UK too, not checked). Server admins in those jurisdictions, you may want to avoid domains containing the word or at least get legal advice before deploying a server with such a domain - this could potentially be costly otherwise.

I smiled at your comments in the clip about #Mastodon where you say "...I think that's a model of where we go, where we use the geeks as we need to but don't put them in charge any more..."
I love what the dev community is building here for non-techies like me. #fediverse #foss #openweb #journalism #newmedia
So exciting! Please consider mirroring these talks on #peertube as @penpot did with their latest #penpotfest @penpot_app
What better way to promote #decentralized platforms and #foss #floss alternatives, it seems like a perfect fit😀
I've been messing about with the Lemmy 🔁 Mastodon interop today and it has BLOWN MY MIND. 🤯
This excellent post from @vjprema explains how to use #Lemmy from your #Mastodon account. Amazing.

As @evan says, don't bet against the #fediverse.

Based on the-federation.info, it looks like over the last ~3 days #Fediverse added about four BlueSky's worth of active users. :blobcatgiggle:
That spike there is roughly 800k monthly active accounts.
Obviously measuring this is difficult, and there are weird bumps like the one about a month ago (visible on the chart), but this time it is confirmed by other metrics sources.
Not all of #NewHere will stay, just like in previous waves. But many will. And it will make fedi more diverse and fun. 🎉
If the #Fediverse is going to see a #TwitterMigration2.0 ... please consider boosting #Calckey to newcomers.
https://calckey.org/join/
Calckey is a newer FOSS microblogging portal into the Fediverse. 100% interoperable with Mastodon, but with features Twitter users probably want:
* QTs (called "Quote Renotes")
* Support for markdown
in notes which is bold* Gallery for images
* "Antennas" to help discovery and "Channels" to help organize
Mastodonauts can also migrate to Calckey just as they would another Mastodon instance (that's what I did).
Just saying... the Fediverse doesn't revolve around Mastodon. This is open source social media. Don't stop migrating!
I only discovered the #fediverse this week because I stopped being able to conveniently access reddit.
Love the concept, still adapting to the execution.
This will probably only reach the void but: is there a community for professional chemists or laboratory workers like r/chempros or r/labrats?

Hello Fediverse! "followers" (hopefully also followers of followers, )
I *know* you have a topic (practical or pedantic 😛) to share with the #fediverse in a 10-15 min talk, so I'd like to invite y'all to sign up for #solsticeschool2023 as a presenter! It's good fun, flexible to schedule, and a way to see some of the folks you interact with here in another medium! Also a nice way to find others to interact with!

Here's how to #FediBlock your entire server from threads.net (edit: as well as threads.instagram.com, a subdomain of Instagram) on #Mastodon 4.1.0 and above (I'm unsure about how to do this on other #Fediverse #servers, sorry:
FOR MODS AND ADMINS:
1. On Mastodon, go to Preferences > Moderation > Federation.
2. Click "Add new domain block".
3. Type "threads.net" (no quotes).
4. Set severity to "Suspend".
5. Click "Create block".
