Just read "The Invention of Nature" by Andrea Wulf, an amazing biography of the naturalist Alexander von Humboldt.

Humboldt himself is not that well known anymore but he essentially laid the groundwork for our current conception of nature and environmentalism.

Humboldt traveled in the Americas and detailed the environmental catastrophe of colonialism in the early 19th century - his observations were strangely prescient and still relevant today.

ENTRANCED
I love to read and every once in a while, I find a book that I cannot put down, no matter what is happening around me. For those of you who have ever been lucky enough to encounter this transcendent state of being, this drawing is for you! 😀 Imagine curled up in your favorite comfy chair, with a hot cup of tea and plate of delicious cookies nearby. All of your "friends" surround you and you have found that peaceful space, entranced with the story before you.

It's been a minute since I posted... Here's an overlooked image I've just found while looking back at photos from the Isle of Harris for an upcoming article about long-term projects.

I wanted to get a picture of a puffin with the mountains in the background instead of the sea. Without a wide-angle lens, this was the best I could pull off lol. I'm still kind of proud of it, though.

I wrote a book. It’s called Drystone – A Life Rebuilt.

If you like:

Non-Fiction (but make it literary)

Stone (but as metaphor too)

Feminism (but quiet and feral)

Men (but as minor characters)

Land (but not romanticised)

Motherhood (but honest)

Then congratulations, this very good book is for you.

"The Sound of Rain", Scotland (2024).

From an early morning scout down on a loch shore, I initially went to see what these small ponds would look like facing in the complete other direction. When I approached on foot, I came over a small crest and was suddenly presented with gorgeous glowing light, the sound of soft rain on the water's surface, a perfectly framed mountain, and a fragment of ancient woodland.

About 250M years ago, 90% of species on Earth died during the Permian extinction. All of that loss created a lot of vacant niches to fill.

And not long after, the first mammals, our ancestors, appeared.

Life on this pale blue dot will be resilient - whether we’re part of it or not. #science #nature #history

A few years back I got this photo of a honey bee in flight, returning to her hive.

Had to shoot a few hundred photos just to land this one.

"Raking Light", Drakensberg 2024. We had risen in the dark to make the short but steep walk up to this view point on our final morning of a 75km traverse of the berg, and were greeted to views with such depth and light of a wonderful quality. The winds were strong but nothing could distract from the immensity of our surroundings.

'Hanging On'

A beautiful, large ancient oak tree with some remnants of autumn colour on a cold, frosty winter's morning. I've got many images of this tree, but I hope one day to have a set of nearly identical images through the different seasons.

Been going on a lot of camera-less walks recently. On those, if I see something pretty, the phone has to suffice. Here's four shots from three walks (top and bottom left were taken today).

The incredible (and often overlooked) mountain landscape of the Isle of Harris, Scotland. This place is rugged and unvisited, partly because the beaches of the island steal away attention and partly because of its unforgiving character. Many of these areas are fairly unexplored in terms of photography and I'm excited to spend a bit more time doing just that over the coming years.

The film version of my image Alleviate. I took this frame while exploring the #PNW coasts of #Washington and the #olympicnationalpark area.

I loved the way the sunlight was highlighting the edges of all the moss on these Alder trees. A beautiful display of #nature

Misty day in the valley yesterday, but higher up, a dopamine rush of bright sun & mind-sharpening blue.

Bonus: the meteorological weirdness of fast-moving cloud hugging close to Fountains Fell; autumn grasses in tarnished golds; scattered flocks of sheep and plover; the local farmer on his buggy, old sheepdog riding pillion.

Headed back revived.
